This is quite an interesting story. Pennsylvania actually experimented with this sometime in the 1800s. It was called the Mt. Penn Gravity Railroad, and it was essentially a railroad thrill ride that people thought to be a Rollercoaster. It used Shay steam locomotives to pull the train up the mountain, and have an operator uncouple the coach from the train and that same operator would rely on gravity to take the coach back to the foot of the mountain, with of course them controlling the coach's brakes.
@Thom-TRA8 ай бұрын

The Mt. Tamalpais & Muir Woods Railway in California worked on the same principle. Trains would leave Mill Valley (NWP connection) behind Shays (and a Heisler) and climb up to the summit of Mt. Tamalpais. There the locos would cut off and the cars given a shove to head downhill by gravity under control of a brakeman on the branch to Muir Woods. The locos would come behind at a discreet distance. Coming back, the cars would be hauled back to the summit, then let down by gravity back to Mill Valley.

It's always been a bit curious to me that the upstop-wheel/guide-wheel technology that roller coasters have had for over a century doesn't get used in transportation to prevent derailments. But, of course, it has many drawbacks when applied to transportation: these wheel assemblies are more complex and generate more friction, they can't use conventional track, and they make switches very bulky and cumbersome, because conventional railroad switches don't work--you have to swap out a whole section of track. So it makes sense that this would be used only on a very short-range line that practically is an amusement ride.

As a longstanding rollercoaster enthusiast, engineer, and member of the RCCGB, I can see *exactly* why Tokyo Zoo would choose this option. Aside from the inherently better safety compared to conventional rail technologies (Rollercoasters are - By design - Virtually impossible to derail 👍) rollercoaster tracks are easier to form to and design around the terrain that the Schwebebahn (Monorail) follows, may not require evacuation gangways (If the train can roll safely to the lower station from any point), and at lower speeds rollercoaster wheels are extremely quiet (Especially the softer rubber types this'll no doubt employ) which will reduce animal disturbance and improve welfare. 🚟🐼👍 Personally, I've often wondered why rollercoaster technology isn't applied to mass transport applications...And now somewhere is _finally_ trying it out (And - As always - 🇯🇵 was one of the first on this!) it might open the floodgates for the adoption of similar systems in the future! 👍

Imagine if one of these could fill a temporary gap while tracks are being rebuilt, or provide temporary mass transit to a major event like the olympics. Or maybe even use this track tech to add a mass transit connection across an existing bridge without adding much weight, wind stress, cost, or taking away lanes.

Given the slow speed at which American transit and commuter rail lines are typically constructed, maybe roller coaster technology has a lot to commend it! On the Chicago CTA Red Line, the most exciting part of the ride is entering the subway from the north. You go down a slope, then around a 45 degree curve as you continue descending into the subway. The speed used to be controlled by the motorman on the train, guided by the signal lights which featured a distinctive yellow over lunar white indication. It was exciting--almost like a rollercoaster! Maybe stodgy commuters would pay higher fares to ride a rollercoaster to work!

I don’t know when everyone’s excited about this is absolutely horrible terrible awful and maybe not for humans, but it is for the animals all these people on here claiming to go to zoos because they love Animal so much if you loved animals so much then you wouldn’t go visit them in a concrete prison behind bars, where they don’t belong animals that are wild like this belong in the wild they were kidnapped, and they were dragged into this facility that basically is a glamorized prison for innocent Beings. They don’t deserve it means that and everything indigenous ripped away from them all their natural habitat taken from them and put in a profit, making facility not a rescue not rehabilitation center just a place for people to days and staring at these animals all day long that don’t belong there. Animals are extremely intelligent creatures probably more Simmons at this rate. If they can talk, they would tell you that they don’t want to be there. They’re meant to live in the wild and they were ripped away from their natural habitat. Forced to live in this horrible facility and probably force breeded program so they can make more animals so they can have more animals Concrete presence so they can stare at them more and make more money now to make it worse they’re gonna roller coasters that will literally traumatized these animals even more so because they were allowed so now they get to listen to these horrible roller coasters going around them all day long something they will never ever listen to if they were living, where they were meant to live zoos are disgusting. There are no better than Seaworld. If you loved animals have a boycott this horrible place never visit them ever again shut them down and boycott them. Animals don’t belong in concrete prison zoos!

Two things: -You clearly don’t know what kind of zoo this is. -You clearly didn’t watch the video, otherwise you would know they’re not actually building a roller coaster. I knew there would be some animal rights “activist” here at some point. Do me a favor: unless you care as much about incarcerated human beings (who don’t get any of the care these animals do), stop bothering me about it. I might go to the zoo today just for you.
