A Tyneside Streak! 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley blasts Newcastle | Edinburgh Christmas Market | 23/11/23

Today's video is of LNER A4 Class 4-6-2 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley working Steam Dreams' "Edinburgh Christmas Market" tour from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley up the East Coast Mainline via Peterborough, York and Newcastle! The tour started this morning behind a Deltic for the trip as far as York, where the A4 took over the train for the remainder.
I initially wanted to go to Northallerton for this, but being otherwise occupied until 1pm, I had to go North, so I chose the iconic spot used for trainspotting since the line's very existence on Newcastle Castle of the A4 passing through Newcastle Central. Unfortunately, today has seen really high winds, and I tired everything to avoid wind noise in the video, wrapping all sorts of extra mufflers to the mic but the wind was so powerful it still got through so apologies for that. Otherwise, with the afternoon sun lighting the city and 60007 as she powered across the King Edward Bridge over the Tyne and through Newcastle Central station, I'd say this spot makes for good viewing!
60007 is doing this as part of a 4 day tour to Edinburgh and this includes a Fife Circular which, all being well, I should be filming! That's in addition to her return to York on Sunday, so stay tuned for copious A4 coverage! *Update: 60007 has failed and will be dragged back to Crewe in the coming days. The Forth Bridge Circular and return Christmas Market tour will both be diesel hauled.

This is where it all started the A4s were the top express locos and they remained in service on the east coast mainline until the 1960s when thanks to the prototype deltics astonishing performance the A4s made way for the deltics and the deltics stayed on top expresses until the introduction of the hst power cars from the 1970s to today

Ah yeah this is where d9000 royal Scot’s grey meets its arch rival 60007 sir Nigel Gresley at York and back in the 60s was where the deltics took over the A4 operation on the top east coast expresses

It would’ve been nice if they keep royal Scot’s grey on the train and see it coupled to sir Nigel gresley and everyone can see the comparison difference between two east coast racehorse legends

The best shots are at ground level. However, it's not easy when having to capture a steamy from above. Never try covering the mic with anything, it destroys the sound of steamies approaching. I think it would have been better if you had captured no. 7 on another day, in hope that the wind would have died down. Plus make sure you're not too close to the overhead wires. One wrong move and it's curtains. I'm sure you don't want to be turned into a delicious bowlful of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes.

Sometimes comments like this confuse me so much I'm totally stumped on what to say 😂 but what I will say is that the best shots aren't always at ground level, covering the mic is often necessary with a windjammer, and No.7 isn't scheduled to do that run again to my knowledge. As for the overhead wires, I'm far closer to them on the platform than I was there. I don't know of any case of 25kV electricity arcing 20 metres in the air. Regards, Dan
