Heading to a 'Stolovaya' or canteen to try some typical Russian food. You can find Stolovaya's (or typical Russian / Soviet cafe's) all over the former Soviet Union, from Ukraine to Kazakhstan, and they are the best place to try local favourites at the best prices.
These typical Russian food halls have all sorts to choose from; from Ukrainian Borsch, to Russian Olivier salad, Solyanka soup and Chicken Kiev with mash potato. The food in these Stolovaya are typical of what an average Russian family would eat at home. We went to a fairly new one in the centre of Adler (Sochi) but they come in all forms, from the modern to the more Soviet. 🇷🇺

This why I love KZbin. I would never have thought to search for a Russian Canteen video. I'm a farm kid from the American Mid South. Except for the delicious looking chocolate cake everything looked and sounded kind of weird, but I would love to try some. Good food is universal. I would enjoy treating you guys to some Memphis dry rub ribs and sweet tea, house wine of the south. Thank you for the entertaining video.

I would certainly try almost anything, but it didn't really look that appetizing to me. It actually looked almost exactly how I would expect Russian food to look, which makes me think it's going to taste exactly how I would expect Russian food to taste. Actually, I'm sure some of it would be pretty good, but for the most part, I don't think I'd be very impressed. But I'd certainly be willing to be proven wrong. Don't see myself going to Russia anytime soon, though.

Greetings from Finland! Cabbage rolls are one of my favourite cabbage food. Those had alot of stuffing, but i refer little less becouse i love the taste of cabbage it self. Cabbage also has so strong good flavor it self that there is no need other spices than salt and pepper. I think most of the finnish people loves cabbage rolls. We usualy eat those with smashed potatoes and simple brown gravy. I also like to have ryebread and milk as i eat cabbage foods in general. Those fit fine together. I also love borch soop. So that would be grate place for me to eat. That liver pancake thing reminds me finnish liverfood made out of grinded liver that has mixed with grinded meat, fined onions and seasoning (salt & pepper). Then those are baked as small flat beefs and roasted in the pan. Smashed potatoes and lingonberrie jam beside and you have tasty dinner on your plate.

Here in Croatia we are made it with sour cabbage rolls calling iz "sarma". Turkish left it and also (in Bosnia) sarma with vine leaves. There are mix of spices in the markets so you need cabbage, meat, rise and egg (someone don`t use eggs). Same mix is using in summer to fill green pepper. 😀

So many Americans have never learned, or forgotten how to cook, or prepare food at home, that prepared meals is all they know. I'm amazed that I could shop in your country and prepare food we would probably all enjoy. We are so regional in this country, yet we can be exposed to foods from many many cultures in one day if we wish. Food is one of the thing that binds us all together. Have to admit that the food looks really good! I’d totally have lunch in places like that if visiting Russia one day! I’m Swedish so Russia isn’t far away geographically. A fair few of Russian dishes look very good, and the few I have tried are amazing! I even made beef stroganoff at home once last year and it was amazing (need to make it again) and with me loving beetroot, I really need to make borscht at home sometime. Some Russian dishes are very common here as well, like cabbage rolls. I’m also a huge fan of semolina (hmm might actually have to go out to the kitchen and make semolina porridge for lunch today)

Spasiba for the wintertime tour (down south) of the Sochi cafeteria and review of the "home cooking" offerings. In Finland (w smaller pop.) only university student unions have such spacious cafeterias. Otherwise the closest equivalents would be the new so-called food courts offering a variety of national and international dishes. Incidentally, cabbage rolls (kaalikääryleet = golubtsi) are considered Finnish national cuisine. Chocolate cake, chicken Kiev and borscht are also popular. During the dark and cold winters hearty soups like (beetroot) borsht and selyanka are great pick-me-ups! The same goes for coffee up here in the Far North. Ваше здоровье!

In the states we would call this a "cafeteria" and the style of food "comfort." When I was a student, it was one my favorite places to dine. The dishes were authentic. It's always a daunting task to go to a canteen in Russia, not speaking any Russian. I can read cyrillic (slowly) and can guess what some of the words mean, and then it's all about hoping that nobody will ask me any questions. Sometimes I've seen the signs written in cursive, which I can't read, and that makes the issue even greater. Then it becomes about the accuracy of your pointing skills.

Ok, let me start first that I really enjoyed the video and I have been seeing more and more Russian videos recently. But I was born early 50s and I opinions of Russian were formed in the cold war and in the books/novels that came out of that era. So I wasn't expecting what I am seeing. I have never seen anything from or about Russia as it is today only what it was like in the 80s. Please forgive but I wasn't expecting such a canteen or videos of supermarkets in Russia that I have seen recently. I am just glad it isn't like what I read about in the bad old days.
