I was going to say that being Scottish I would have thought Steven would have mentioned Pallas and then he did right at the end - Beat the Drum was an excellent return for them in 1999 as was the Cross and the Cucible a year or so later- not so sure about them after Alan Reed left though still good stuff nonetheless. Steven also then mentioned Credo, another very good one. I always really liked Mr So and So's The Overlap, great guitar form Dave Foster; Landmarq with both Damian Wilson and Tracy Hitchings on vocals, and then more recently there has been Lifesigns with John Young at the helm . Everything you mentioned is great though - and nice to see Jadis , Touchstone and one of my favourites The Tangent in there - Andy Tillison is just phenomenal and prior to the Tangent led the equally brilliant Parallel or 90 degrees - well worth checking out ther catalogue. Loads of other ok but maybe not great geat bands like Grey Lady Down (though quite derivative), Grace - possibly doing the same sort of stuff later taken on by Big Big Train along with Jump - though not sure if they should be considered prog i a similar way to why I dont consider Ten to be prog. Moria Falls - great music but not so great singer unfortunately. Haze/ World Turtle. Manning. Abel Ganz. All those things that Rob Reed was involved in like Cyan. Pete mentioned the wonderful Cyclops Label - I have loads of CDs on that lable, and they also used to do some cracking smapler CDs - Malcolm Parker did a fantastic job in bringing out loads of albums during the 90s helping to keep the prog scene alive and selling them through his GFT mail order outlet - there was also CeeDees mail order from Scotland that also got a lot of my hard earned going their way. Personally I wouldnt consider Ten as being prog or being able to be included in this list - more melodic hard rock/AOR/ pomp . I'd put them in a grouping with other bands that I used to read about in Fireworks magazine such as Hard Rain (from Magnum) Strangeways, Dare, Heartland - I can sort of see why you may have considered them to be in this list but if they were theyd be right out at the very far edge of it. Some great albums form them though - and of course Vinny Burns did once play in Asia - but then I dont consider Asia to be prog either, yes they comprised some of the greatest prog musicians ever but to me their sound wasnt what I think of when I think of Prog.

I really enjoy it when you and Steven get together, because you are both so enthusiastic. I'm still trying to make my way through the first list from the first show, as there was a lot I didn't know, and now I have a whole pile more. I'd say about 80% of the bands you guys name, I have never listened to. I've been a Marillion fan for years, and got to see them live on the "Clutching At Straws" tour. I know Frost, and Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree, Anathema, Osric Tentacles, and a few others, but most I haven't listened to, so you have given me a task to carry out!

A short follow up... Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree are definitely my favorites from the UK. Big Big Train is a band I am continuing to like more and more. Haken definitely has some amazing songs on "Mountain" and "Affinity", liking them more as well. I should point out the reason she was there was to deliver the new album. Ken said hi Rand Your timing is impeccable Camel is coming here any moment to bring the new cd. He expected Andy and Susan but Andy had a bad cold. Tried to like Radiohead and gave up no money for them.

Radiohead - Kid A is my #1 album of the century. #2 is Sigur Ros - Takk. I've recently met other Sigur Ros fans who are moved to tears, as I am, when I listen to Takk. Sounds stupid, but I know I'm not alone.

Great overview. Some bands or artists that I would have included here are: Dec Burke (solo or with Darwin's Radio all excellent stuff); Cosmograf an amazing project; Tinyfish the progband showing keyboards are not obligatory and the Room bordering between Prog and melodic rock.. Pleased to see Galahad on one, such an underrated band. The albums by Lee Abraham ex bass now guitar in that band are very worthwhile exploring too.

I think Mansun deserves some recognition. I recently heard an album of theirs called "Attack of the Grey Lantern." These guys had something going here, but the band had internal quarrels and couldn't keep it together. Amazing album.

I have to check out some of the bands you mentioned. This was epic! I would maybe add oceansize because they are super unique and have so many different facets to them. Nice to see Touchstone getting some love here. Discovered them back in 2008 at a festival, and have seen them live a number of times since. They do seem to be in limbo at the moment, but they were supposed to a show last year - Adam Hodgson and Moo are trying to keep the band going without Rob Cottingham. Lots of other good albums mentioned here, but I would definitely include some Mostly Autumn in mine - either The Last Bright Light or Dressed in Voices. They are one of my favourite bands of all time

Hi Pete, loving the run-down of top 30 prog albums from the 1970s you're doing in June 2023, but is there any chance that you and Stephen (and/or anyone else) might do a similar video to this for prog albums produced in Europe, North America and elsewhere from 1990 onwards. It strikes me that there's been a big resurgence in prog over the last 30 years or so and I’m sure that a lot of Yes, Genesis, Floyd. King Crimson, ELP, Jethro Tull fans are missing out on a lot of fantastic music.

Well done, Pete and Steven. I love the lists. Each of you picked among many of my favorites by most bands listed. Anathema should be on these lists and was well represented. Jadis is much overlooked and belongs here as well. Galahad and Citizen Cain were surprises and well worth placement here. I would add a couple of things to my list at the expense the Pineapple Thief and Ozric Tentacles--not because they don't belong, but because there are things I like better. For example, Casino's only title. This featured Geoff Mann of Twelfth Night, Clive Nolan of Pendragon/Arena, Jon Jeary (ex Threshold) and Karl Groom (Threshold, Shadowlands). This one is brilliant. I have to add Pallas' "Beat the Drum". My final entry is a long shot, but Mostly Autumn was overlooked and should be included. Their catalog is varied and they have suffered many line up changes, but I still love the "Spirit of Autumn Passed" so much. It not their most mature album, but it is filled with energy and some great synth work--with one of the best synth solos on an opening track I've ever heard. Notable mentions would include Cosmograph's "THe Man They Left in Space" and Landmarq's "Science of Coincidence."

Steven-Are you familiar with a Scottish band called Clouds (originally called 1-2-3)? They put out 3 albums in the late '60s / early '70's on Chrysalis records. A trio featuring Ian Ellis, Billy Richie and Harry Hughes. Many consider them to be the original Prog Rock band. I saw them live in 1970-amazing! My favorite album is Up Above Our Heads.

I do have a problem though with calling all of them prog, as many are channelling the past, and not pushing the boundaries of the present. Big exception here is Steven Wilson, who has always been exploring new avenues, blending different styles, and pissing off fans. People like Joe Jackson and XTC (from new wave), Talk Talk (from new romantics), Mansun (from Britpop), Guillemots (from ???), Lewis Taylor (from soul) and Jacob Collier (from acapella jazz) have done similarly at times, and I like and respect them all for showing this ambition.

I've been trying to get Pete to pay attention to Sound of Contact, to no avail. Hopefully he will try it and if he likes it as much as Steven does, it will be added to Pete's next one-hit wonder video because Sound of Contact is a one and done band. Ball's in your court, Mr. Pardo!

Great show chaps Road of Bones is brilliant. Agree with Pete about giving Steven more freedom and that can be said about the personnel of the HVS, its the perfect time for the channel to expand, not just to different genres in Rock and Metal but those thousands of bands who have not yet been mentioned, but are on the SoT website, Pete has a lot of fantastic contributors, who gradually need to be let loose. Starting with Pete's Ranking the albums of (cough cough) Paradox with the effervescent Steven Reid. 👍

Steven, thank you for mentioning Sound of Contact. I think if you do a deep dive you'll find that Dave Kerzner was the primary songwriter of that album. Simon wrote Pale Blue Dot and maybe I Am, but Dave K wrote the large majority of the songs.

Great show. Very interesting to see Pete pick Deadwing as his favorite Porcupine Tree Album. Back during the ranking of the Albums he put it more towards the middle. It's interesting, how our opinions can fluctuate over time quite a bit.

Thanks to this, I'm now spinning my cd of Window of Life by Pendragon. I just picked up Milliontown about a week ago and I don't know why it took me so long to get it... I've been enjoying it for sure. Yea, I'm more of a Dunnery It Bites kind a guy, but I'll check out the later stuff. As much as I love In Absentia and Deadwing, Stupid Dream is my favorite PT album.

I’ve been getting stuff from them since it was Freakbeat magazine. First time I heard Porcupine Tree on the Pick and Mix sampler. Got a bunch of the 7” singles and Flexi discs from them as well.

Fear Of A Blank Planet made my overall top 20 UK albums of all time so I chose a different Porcupine Tree release for this one. It is undoubtedly a GREAT album!

Loved the show guys! 1 big trip through prog Memory Lane for me, so I learned nothing new today, but I don't mind that at all for a change! Mostly Autumn, Landmarq, Kino, Lonely Robot, Oceansize and Amplifier, Panic Room, Breathing Space, Stolen Earth, The Room, Cloud Atlas, This Winter Machine, Lifesigns come to mind on the top of my head, but I am sure I forget a couple still. "Ten" is an interesting band indeed Pete. Songs as The Robe & The Name of the Rose are epic and proggy songs, but a little too heavy on the guitars for me as well to put them in this list yes!

Three bands I have to mention: Moetar: now defunct but relesed two studio albums: These Small Seeds - 2012 and Entropy Of The Century - 2014. If you like Zappa you'll get it. Most underated band of the last decade. Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum: released three studio albums between 2001 - 2007. Cardiacs: released albums throughout the 80s and 90s. Punk meets Zappa meets early Genesis. Awesome music! One more thing, am I the only one who thinks Steven Wilson's stuff (including Porcupine Tree) is wildly overrated?

@@paulcollins5586 They were formed in France by an Australian and Englishwoman and French musicians. However the Virgin deal brought them over to the UK and the French musicians were replaced by British nationals other than Didier Malherbe, Mike Howlett and Miquette Giraudy. The classic line up featured Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth, Steve Hillage, Howlett, Pip Pyle, Tim Blake, Malherbe and Giraudy. Pierre Moerlen took over the Gong name and they became a jazz fusion band but it we'd Daevid Allen's Planet Gong, New York Gong and Gong Maison that led the road back to the UK incarnation. Shapeshifter was the work of the reformed Gong by which time they were a UK concern. The original band was back in action by 2009 but the latest version is all UK bar the lead guitarist and they're based here.
