The cost will be paid by the US. Because by restricting its own tech companies to do business with China, it gives all the incentives for China to innovate and develop its own. For example, since the US ban on Huawei, the company has become world's number 1 phone seller and SMIC(Chinese semiconductor foundry) got the largest client possible so now it will have the money necessary to catch up with the TSMC's node advantage in the coming years. China also start producing its own Sunway TaihuLight microprocessors for their supercomputers after the Obama ban on Intel to supply the Chinese supercomputers. China also finished its BeiDou's Navigation Satellite System, started building its own Tiangong Space Station since the US banned it from participating in the ISS, produced a new, homemade third-generation nuclear reactor technology etc. etc. etc. The list is basically endless. The more pressure the US puts on China's tech development, the stronger, more agile and innovative China's homegrown tech is becoming.

@@jeff_the_killer999 Chinese excepts traitors are win-win oriented! Deng initiated China's Opening Up and Reform in 1978, gave up comintern, restored all tradition and culture (so that my family can worship Buddha at home), kept a low profile, focused on economy development and improvement of people's living, set up Chinese characteristic socialism - a kind of hybrid of capitalism and socialism which is good for China since heavily populated! Chinese are forward looking and still already solved all border issues using "Give and Take" strategy with neighbors excepts India. Allied with China benefit all countries people! China wants to modernize first, then democratize.

I think the Chinese Vice minister should also explain why other forms of social media other than WeChat are not allowed in China. He is pointing fingers at the US but at the same time the Chinese govt are doing the same thing way before Trump started this war.

Most people think they know more than they can accomplish, including ideation, patent write-ups. Only politicians would like you to believe other people do better by stealing than to show their utter incompetence.

How is an AI toilet paper dispenser helping the country? It would be great if it was used to find out who needs help and how the government could assist them…NOT fine them or vilify them. IMAGINE a world where AI helped and NOT SHAMED. This super surveillance system in China is where everything WILL GO WRONG for them.

I mean, don't developers already need to deal with two sets of standards on iOS vs Android? Yes, I know stuff like React Native exists, but that's created exactly to deal with the "have to develop twice" issue. I still remember when Apple natively restricts its UI styling so cross-platform apps have a completely different look on iOS vs Android. Yes, having two sets of standards is bad for efficiency, but we're already living in that reality to some extent.

Most important take away is that one country is represented by common people e.g. physicist, students. While the other country is represented by officials. Is this unbiased reporting?

"So whether it's the Chinese government or the US government, or other governments in Europe and this and that. They all adopt a very similar techno-nationalistic rhetoric in saying that science is a tool of national greatness and we want talent recruitment to boost our national prestige and prosperity, blah blah blah, The important question that we need to ask is not how many scientists are in the US, how many scientists are in China, because that is still an attempt of drawing a border around a piece of knowledge and claiming it as being in ownership of a state. I think what the coronavirus pandemic should be teaching us is that nations and human bodies are all porous entities. So no country can enclave itself in a bubble and keeps its citizens safe. We really need to be able to stop clinging to these old ideas of citizenship and creed, using these concepts of scarcity to justify our bigotry, to really be able to see and think about community beyond the confines of a state. We inhabit the same planet, we share the same cosmological history and we are bound by the same fundamental laws of the universe. And our fates are connected on the surface of this planet that is shifting because of climate change. And if we do not have that kind of radical transformation, with regards to how we organise our society, we are literally running out of time." Cheng Yang Yang - Particle Physicist So much truth spoken by a scientist who views the current situation of our world from a scientific lens, not influenced by her nationality, but as a citizen of the Earth. Drawn up borders, nationalistic ownership, or a show of might & strength, etc, it is just a superficial farce for superpowers in wanting to assert dominance over one another. And who suffers? The respective country's citizens and the other citizens of the Earth.
