I can understand them not wanting to do cutscenes on the scale of Subspace, but I feel like we could have gotten characters interacting through text to keep the story more connected while also having that crossover aspect intact

@@OrangeToadGamer this is an amazing take actually I wish we could at least get this, however without the grand instrumental scores and level progression and cutscenes with all of our new favorite characters would it really be anywhere near an improvement

The trailer cut of the opening is unironically much more epic than the ingame version. It is not about scale, it is just not that interessting in the way it is presented.

@@lpfan4491 But the scale could and should be grander. Smash Ultimate was supposed to be the ultimate smash game right. Yet it's missing the most integral part for a bunch of fans. We want badass cutscenes to think about for all of these characters.

The main hurdle to that I think is that a large amount of the roster don't really talk much or at all. Which just ends up feeling awkward when they are put in the same room as characters who can speak full sentences. Subspace style cutscenes is legitimately the best way to have the characters interact since it mimics the imagination and mind of a child playing with their toys and can quickly switch between humor and heart without much inertia.

That definitely fair. On a semi-related note though, I did end up reading a WoL fanfic that actually has pretty good story telling and character interactions for the most part, it's called *The World of Light and the Ultimate Fight* and its by *The Hooded Writer* I know most fanfics have a bad stigma towards them but I can vouch for this one showing how a story through text could of worked in Ultimate

I enjoy WoL, but I can understand why some people might not be as fond of it. I believe that if Galeem's World Map were more interactive, similar to Dharkon's World Map, the mode would be a lot more interesting.

World of Light felt like a last-minute addition. All the fights are from the Spirit Board and the bosses (aside from Galeem and Dharkon) can all be fought in Classic Mode. It feels like it was only added in because Sakurai knew fans wanted a new Adventure Mode after Smash 4 didn't have one, but couldn't do a Subspace-like Adventure Mode due to time constraints and the roster being so big, so World of Light ended up the way it is.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the actual reason WoL is the way it is. A story mode that they wouldn't need to dump too many resources into while still being its own different experience

While I do understand the major criticisms with World of Light, I still have a fun time with it. Yes, the overuse of spirit battles can be tedious, but I feel like that's the point. Galeem and Dharkon are making spirts control different clones of fighters against their will and fighting the spirits basically free them from Galeem and Dharkon's control. With these spirits, they can help you with your attack, speed, defense, and all the different attributes these spirits have. Having less cutscenes in World of Light than in Subspace Emissary honestly doesn't bother me at all. I feel like the major reason Subspace Emissary is liked so well is because of the cutscenes with all the characters interacting with each other as they find their way to stop Tabuu from conquering the Smash Bros world. While I do agree that Subspace is great, I will say that it's not perfect. It has the flaw of having a bit of bland level designs and not much of memorable themes. Maybe the bosses are an exception, but that's about it. Ignoring World of Light's tedious spirit battles, it does have the cool concept of needing to have certain spirits to solve puzzle and unlock passageways. That is something I don't really see people talk about all too much. And hey, like Subspace Emissary, you can unlock all the fighters in WoL, which is pretty cool. I don't wanna waste billions of hours doing versus matches over and over again just to unlock more fighters. F*ck it, I'll choose WoL anyday if I ever want to unlock fighters! With all these things said, I have to say that all the bosses are really great additions to WOL, just like Subspace Emissary. I like that the bosses uses attacks that are fun callbacks to their original source material like Dracula, Marx, Ganon, and even returning bosses like Galleom and Giga Bowser. Speaking of bosses, WE GOTTA TALK ABOUT THE FINAL BOSS! Despite all the criticism and hate this mode gets, I feel like the one thing that people may all agree with here is that the final battle of World of Light is one hell of an epic finale. Galeem and Dharkon, the two evil gods that caused this mess to happen in the first place, are both fighting each other for control of the universe. It's your job to balance things out by taking out the right amount of light AND dark spirits. If you kill way too many light spirts, darkness will swallow the light, surrounding Galeem. And if you Galeem INDIVIDUALLY, you will be greeted to a bad ending sequence where Galeem gets f*cking impaled by chains while it slowly drains him, leaving Mario and all the rest of the fighters to just flat out die. (Good job on the kid-friendly factor, Nintendo) If you kill way too many dark spirits, the same scenario happens but light has consumed the darkness. If you kill Dharkon alone, it's greeted with the similar treatment with Galeem before, but now Dharkon is being disintegrated by Galeem's beam of light. After Dharkon is destroyed, Galeem pulls out the same attack he did back in the beginning of WoL, expect everyone dies this time. In order to stop this ongoing conflict, you at least need to defeat 2 Master Hands and 2 Crazy Hand, while also keeping light and darkness balanced. Once you freed both Master and Crazy Hand, they both create a mysterious portal in the sky. Once you get to the hands, they used their combined attacks to makes an even bigger portal pop up. Master Hand goes in the portal and...................YOU GET TO PLAY AS F*CKING MASTER HAND!!! No cheats! No hacks! This is legit gameplay of playable Master Hand! The fact that this showed up at the end of WoL really putted a big smile on my face! However, all you need to do is kill 50 clone fighters and you're basically done. After that wild fever dream, the sky breaks into a beautiful sunny sky, leaving you to conquer both light and darkness. And all that's left is to fight Galeem and Dharkon AT THE SAME TIME! You have the option to choose 3 separate fighters to help you in the final battle. Now before you fight the two gods, you are forced to go through an down-up autoscroller while you fight clone fighters and avoid some of Galeem and Dharkon's hazardous attacks. One you are done with all of that, you are sent to part 2 of the final battle. Basically, you have to do a Boss Rush of defeating every single boss you've definitely throughout World of Light (or as I like to call it now, "World of Light/Dark"). And people complained that Smash Ultimate didn't have a boss rush mode. Well, if you ever want to fight all the bosses with any character, just go do the finale of World of Light over and over again. YOU'RE WELCOME! Anyway, once you've killed all those bosses, you are finally met with the two main antagonists of this mode, Galeem and Dharkon. This massive fight has an interesting mechanic of both of the bosses damaging each other, which can be your biggest advantage to winning this fight. If you knock either Galeem or Dharkon, the other will do massive damage to the one vulnerable. This can help take down both Galeem and Dharkon a lot easier. With that being said, it comes at the cost of having to deal with some devastating attacks like Galeem's off waves or Dharkon's X bombs. And because of that, people are bound to say that this fight is unfairly brutal, to which I say, "Well, they're probably playing on Hard Mode, which explains the brutal damage they've been taken. If that's the case, then change the different back to Normal Mode. Don't be so hard on yourself." I like how that once you defeat either Galeem or Dharkon, the background changes to either light or dark. I like the attention-to-detail there. And lastly, onc you've finally killed both Galeem and Dharkon, everything sets back to normal and all the spirts are set free. And since I'm a guy that plays the entirety of Subspace Emissary, I will say that this is definitely a better finale than whatever the hell the Great Maze is. In the end, while I do agree that World of Light has its major lows, it was still a fun experience through and through.

"More to be desired" would be my best way of putting it. The cutscenes in Subapace brought a lot more personality and charm and all of the stages that were hand crafted made things feel like a real pve/story mode. While it was a bit much to ask for considerating how much is already in the game, one could only wish for the reality that was another fleshed out smash campaign.

Wyen looking at it with the difficulty of creating it alongside the multiplayer content, my only complaint is I wish there were descriptions with the spirits. What I liked about trophies in previous games was it allowed me to get to know characters I didnt know about previously. This time, however, the battles do perfectly represent the characters, but you'll only enjoy the references if you already know the character

World of Light may have a lot of issues, but for me one thing I think it does better than Subspace Emissary is the locations. In Subspace everything felt a bit generic, with a few reconigzable places sprinkled in. But for World of Light a lot of places in the map are taken or heavily inspired from the games.

I personally think the key behind World of Light is that it is a great introduction to the game for new players. Seeing all these mechanics and effects kind of helps you undertand how the game actually works, and the fact that you slowly unlock the characters with this mode also helps on getting the feel of the game and the new characters. I think i would enjoy it now, but by far not as much as I did when the game came out because of this. Nevertheless I totally recommend it to new players! (Great video btw, from someone who actually likes fighting spirits spiritless 🤣)

What are some of your favorite Spirit Battles? Here are two of mine: Kapp'n: In this Spirit Battle, he essentially tries to drown you. Which is what some Kappas are known to do. Viridi: Her Spirit Battle is timed perfectly to the Reset Bomb in the background of her stage. Once it explodes you automatically lose

The Dash impact spirits basically turn your character into Peppino Spaghetti it's great Also I agree with the sentiment that more fights should've given you a CPU ally, or maybe world of light could've given you the option to summon a CPU ally from your roster of freed characters.

At first i was quite disappointed by WoL. For every entry that we don't get Subspace-like story mode, it just makes me wanna go back and play Brawl instead. That being said, WoL did grow on me over time. Didn't care too much for the spirit part for awhile but once i got into it. It made WoL a bit more appealing. Do like how the spirits can level up and you can put them in training to get experience. They could've skipped the special spirit training that makes almost no difference. The ones where it's more strength, better defence, etc. I didn't feel it made any noticable difference, so they should either scrap it or make it better. I actually do prefer spirits over trophies and stickers. Trophies had no function other than you can read about it. Stickers are more or less the same as spirits, i just find spirits more easy to use. For the next game i hope they keep spirits but also add some text to them. What woL needed was co-op mode, it's always more fun when you have the option to play with someone. Some fights could also have been made character specific. Where you would have to use Pikachu for certain fights or something like that. This would change up the repetitive format just a little. Also for some areas they could've added anventure-like gameplay into the mix. Like Melee and Brawl had. Where you beat a stage. These could've been all the spirit places where you unlock a character. Idealy we'd have cutscenes for these segments but if that's out of the question, then atleast just give us the adventure-esque gameplay. With or without cutscenes they're still fun to play, Melee proved that.

It's not really the lack of story or cinematics yhat bother me. It's the fact that, outside the Final Boss, there's no challenge in WOL that put your platforming skills to the test. That's what made Subspace and ESPECIALLY Smash Run for me. The feeling of Jumping and navigating to different large places using the unique mechanics of a Platform Fighter.

I just didn't have fun with either the gameplay nor the story. When I then saw that all the other singleplayer content is just the same few copypasted things I didn't want to play anymore, I just stuck to only playing Ultimate online until I got my fill with the game and moved on. For all its issues, I never felt that tired of the singleplayer content in Smash 4, and the mission mode was full of much more fun event battles than WoL ever had.

IMO, it really was just how you couldn't go 2 steps without running into another Spirit Battle. If there were half the amount or you had the option to skip some of them, that'd greatly improve the pacing. That being said, WoL does still feel over-hated, which isn't too surprising considering how amazing most of Ultimate is. Most of those who unironically say Ult is bad are either in the Old Married Couple/Fatigue phase with the game, & or are one of THOSE Melee/spiritual successors (I.E Rivals 2) people who say any game that isn't blistering fast sucks.

Plus, I like the way it feels, combos hit harder for me, the weight feels right, without losing the movement or area of the platform fighter, more ways to kill. Bc knocking them out of bonds is still affective, n I still have a soild chance to fight and make a come back even when at low hp, plus I love the explosion that happens when u get them to zero.

The cutscenes were the ONLY good part of World of Light honestly, none of the fights feel “new” or “impactful” in my opinion. I’m not too fond with WoL honestly, even though I had a biiit of fun with it. WoL just feels like a last minute addition rather a main part of the game. It doesn’t have almost much which Subspace Emmissary had. Subspace had almost every fighter interact with each other with even the characters that were excluded in the main part of Subspace, STILL have a cutscene special to them. Jigglypuff, Wolf and Toon Link all have a special door on the Maze (I believe) where if you enter, you’ll encounter them and unlock them in story mode. Not to mention the rest of the cutscenes that have every character interaction with each other and you KNOW how exactly they feel in the current situation they are in, and Subspace didn’t even have ONE line of dialogue, not a text box, not a subtle text, NOT. A. WORD. And you still manage to feel connected to the characters in the cutscenes. Not to mention the fights in Subspace were more unique, they fit the story and changed ENTIRE ways to make you play the game. The fights were impactful, the smash minions were special and unique from each other and even playing through the normal worlds felt great to run about since there really wasn’t time to run out from so you can take your time to watch the scenery rather than “Oh No! Pauline is the spirit you’re currently facing, quick, try to kill her in under a minute while avoiding dying from Mario with a hammer and giant donkey Kong on 75 f***ing m!” None of the spirit battles made me feel the same way I first felt in Subspace Emissary. Even ALL the bosses in Subspace Emissary felt extremely important to the story rather than nostalgia bait at the last second in WoL. WoL just doesn’t carry the same charm that Subspace had at first. If there were bosses that impacted the story in WoL, the unlockable characters having special cutscenes for themselves before or after you fight them, the spirit fights not being too repetitive, just ANYTHING that isn’t just fighting different spirits with random buffs, I would’ve loved playing through WoL more.

For me the biggest issue with Spirits as a whole is how 99% of fights end up being completely mindless and requiring zero intelligence despite the supposed options. You can always easily overpower them with the first legend Spirit you have and then it becomes forward smash simulator. World of Light is both bad (Is almost nothing except Spirit on a board, with only the final section being very cool. What kind of adventure mode is that?) and grindy, it lasts more than 4/5 hours for absolutely zero reason. The only memorable part is the final part but doesn't justify the rest of it, Subspace had also a lot of gameplay issues but between that and World of Light there is an abyss of mediocrity.

Gameplay-wise, i actually prefer World Of Light over Subspace. As novel as that mode is, i don't actually think the platforming was particularly interesting. The story absolutely carried it for me. World Of Light is decent. I like the RPG-esq feel it has, and it visually looks way more interesting, both due to the artstyle, and because it uses less generic locations. I do think there's TOO many spirit battles, so its definitely a play in short bursts mode. And of course, actual character interactions would've gone a long way

Have been revisiting this mode recently. It's actually really good but it being borderline falsely advertised as the only voice acting (or character interactions in general) in the entire thing is in the cutscene used to hype up the mode as a big end-of-Direct announcement is really scummy and set the wrong expectation. They even went ahead and brought back Galleom but didn't give any context to his appearance which felt super cheap. Some of the references are actually really cool (Dracula enhancing into Soma is my favorite) and the boss fights are quite good although pretty much all of them are in Classic Mode anyway. With Sakurai *still* somehow mad about SSE cutscene reuploads (it's 2024 man, literally every single game ever has this happen to them, you're not special) it doesn't look like the players will get justice any time soon.

I'd take a single Break the Targets stage for the whole roster to share over WoL. I haven't touched it since I 100%ed it at launch, it was just so boring and easy IMO. I even did every fight Spiritless in the Spirit Rematch mode for the max possible score, and 99% of the fights were completely mindless (the remaining 1% were fights with Wind). There were some cute references here and there, but as a whole I didn't enjoy World of Light at all.

I enjoyed playing it in bursts, I found it a nice relaxing way to play game, beating every spirit spiritless is actually psychotic though lmao

@AnActualEgg1 Lol, psychotic perhaps, but I'm striving to do every mode with every character in every Smash game on the hardest difficulty (no Continues) so it was a necessary step. And really most of it wasn't that bad, if not a bit dull. Took me most of the summer playing sporadically in 2021.

The ONLY hype thing about world of light was that you can play as master hand. But other than that everything else was boring.

This mode generally bores me at the start. But the spirits are kinda dumb and its fun to watch them get cheesed by villager tree. They just dont know what do do.

Finally, someone talks about the gamemode that I've replayed over 20 times. I'm even learning new stuff with spirit builds

i think world of light was a nice addition but after the first playthrough it really does lose its magic. trying to 100% it and collect every spirit is beyond frustrating

I think world of light is almost the perfect definition of mid, it's not terrible, but it's not that good I did enjoy it, but it becomes a huge drag on repeat playthroughs

Yes, it's terrible. 2/10 world of light is extremely bad.

Considering after beating it once or twice and going on spirt board for a bit and then dummoning and dlc spirits you can get every spirts which can massively buff your stats I'm talking jab does 115 damage like buffs also Gannon cam get super armor if he equips a certain spirit team and have impack run it's truly crazy you can heal well taking damage from a final aah going from kill percent to able to teck easily or survive now total bs but fun also turning bowser jr into the fastest thing ever or pichu or pichu into a lightweight gid with pretty much maxed out speed going faster than a melee character with just walking let alone running spirits are great adventure was pretty great
