A Visit to St Catherine's Oratory - The Pepperpot

St. Catherine's Oratory is a medieval lighthouse on St. Catherine's Down, above the southern coast of the Isle of Wight. It was built by Lord of Chale Walter de Godeton (sometimes spelled "Goditon") as an act of penance for plundering wine from the wreck of St. Marie of Bayonne in Chale Bay on 20 April 1313. The tower is known locally as the "Pepperpot" because of its likeness.
It is Britain's only surviving medieval lighthouse, and the second oldest (only the Roman lighthouse at Dover being older). It is a stone structure four stories high, octagonal on the outside and four-sided on the inside, originally attached to the west side of a building; remnants of three other walls are visible.

I run and work on St Catherine's Island in Tenby, Pembrokeshire. Before the fort, that is now situated there was built, there was a chapel called St Catherine's that was built around the same time and looked very similar to this one. Like this one featured in the video, it was also ransacked by Henry VIII

Fabulous view as well I remember, everyone should visit the island at least once. There ar3 so many places to visit in such a small area. Some where a t home I still have the ramblers map of the Isle Of Wight showing the many walks.

a brilliant narrated history of the pepper pot by liz….found it quite interesting indeed. reminded me of a nice place I once visited long ago...the Ardmore round tower and St Declans oratory in county Waterford...well worth a visit if you find yourself in that part of Ireland.

Yes I’ll go with the first space rocket built by the O Milligan’s of Spike! It would have flown but for two errors! 1,it was to be powered by peat(doesn’t create the whoosh needed for a propellant),2,they cemented it’s foundations in the ground(impedes momentum)!! But apart from that,they could have been the first on the moon!?!
