A Visit To The Once Abandoned JW Cooper School

We head up into Pennsylvania's anthracite coal region to the small town of Shenandoah. There resides an old treasure of a building that was a joy for my wife and I to explore. The JW Cooper School was built in 1917 but it's opening was delayed because of the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918. During this time it was used as a hospital and morgue. After many years of service it was finally closed in 1994. It has suffered from neglect and abandonment until recently when new owner Kent Steinmetz has vowed to restore it and turn it into a community center and food bank. The room at 31:15 was used for models and the room next to it was used for photographers during photo events. It's truly a unique place to photograph. Thank you for the tour.

Thank you for sharing this video. The school is being demolished now. I attended that school during its last years and it’s nice to be able to watch your video and remember. From what I remember, the room you mentioned may be a teachers lounge was used for In School Suspension. The gym also doubled as our cafeteria.

Thank you for the information. It was a really interesting building to explore. We realized as we were walking through those halls that there must have been hundreds upon hundreds of memories made over all those years. It’s a shame the building couldn’t be saved.

I didn’t see where the kindergarten classrooms were down the steps .. remember them having big bird and Sesame Street characters on the wall. I think that’s where he says no I’m not going to be there. 😢

No. I was told the previous owner gutted the place of plumbing and heating equipment.
