This Is a common issue, in Italy we have many FCA cars with that problem. There was a time in which Fiat choosed a polymer for those plastic bits that was bad engineered and behaved as a thermohardening polymer. Same happens to Fiat 1.4 16v engines airbox, that simply disintegrates and pieces of plastic can be sucked in the intake and into the engine. My Fiat Stilo 6 Speed (1.4 16v) has the airbox changed and thermically insulated to prevent this. If you have a FCA car (Fiat/Alfa/Lancia) from 2005-2012 check the plastic bits and replace if they behave like the plastic cam cover in the video

Neil this happened to my 159 last year. Engine warning light, read codes, both cams out of time. Garage checked and teeth had jumped by 3 teeth. I've owned five Alfas and run them to high miles, and they are no worse than most cars these days, and better than many. Just get one with a solid service/ maintenance record that hasn't been messed about by a boy racer, then make sure you have somebody like Neil to look after it. Most important is to stay ahead of the maintenance and never ever miss a service or cam belt change.

Alfa Romeo’s are reliable. A lot of cars on these videos are 10 to 15 years old or more. Some times plastic is damaged by using incorrect solvents and fluids. I have had 6 Alfa’s and they have been great. Just make sure you get it serviced as per manual as should be done with all cars.

Oh dear, I've clearly hit a nerve with some Alfa fans. I love the look of 159's but rust is an issue on them. There's a chap on YT based in the UK that was chasing rust repairs on a 2009 / 2010 car.....to the point where the A pillars down to the sills were virtually non existent due to rot. The outside of the car was clean and shiny and looked really tidy but underneath was a very different story indeed. Before anyone says its due to the age of the car...in comparison, my 2009 Octavia vRS is rust & rot free.

To everyone talking about Alfa Romeo being unreliable, you english should look back at British Leyland before talking about reliability. This Is a bad issue but here in Italy, where the service network is specialized (because we have more Fiat/Alfa/Lancia cars around) no one has big problems, almost every issue Is well known and solved in a small trip to the mechanic. Many of the reliability issues with italian cars are a thing because the service network abroad Is not good (not talking about Italia Autos, he Is awesome)

Also happens to certain German, British & Korean cars, possibly others, as in the last 2 decades manufacturers have been using more "eco friendly" materials that break down more easily for the environment, unfortunately that also means that when cars are 10+ years old & still working, they suffer failures like this, as most cars are only designed to have a 10 year lifespan.
