Apparently during the first season, James Gandolfini received an anonymous phone call and someone basically said, “we like what you’re doing, but a don doesn’t wear shorts” then hung up. So David Chase used it in this episode for Carmine. It was assumed the actual mob was watching the show and enjoying it, but they had to correct them

It’s not assumed the mob was watching the show, their is actual fbi wire taps of them discussing which characters are based off them

I'm almost 100% certain the whole story is bullshit. No amount of pride would ever make a guy avoid wearing shorts on a hot summer day.

@@DarthOblivious7891 not in a public setting they wouldn’t. Sure if he was alone or swimming in his own backyard, but not if there was a public gathering/out in public. John Gotti would even go to the beach in pants. You’d never catch any of those kind of guys out and about with shorts on

I don't think Tony lied about who killed Chris' father. Right before he was about to get shot he started apologizing 'Im Sorry. Im sorry"
@kahlbutomacfarland5 ай бұрын
I lean your way. If he hadn’t said “I’m sorry” I would probably lean the other way. It’s ambiguous purposely. I REALLY miss this type of ambiguity in writing, practically a dead art. They also did it masterfully with Livia being senile or not.

I think it was a last ditch effort. Maybe he thought "well shit this asshole really believes i did it, maybe if I at least apologize even though i didnt do it he'll spare me"

Ahh season 4, this is a great one. Season 4 has my favorite scene in the entire show. Season 4 has my favorite dramatic, “oh my gosh” scene in the entire show. Season 4 has my favorite song used in the entire show. One of the reasons why I really like this season is because of how these characters are written. This season is like a roller coaster, and I enjoy every second of it
@tristansummerall23465 ай бұрын
Season 4 has something special about it to me. Maybe it is the tone shift after 9/11 but the characters just feel way more real and fleshed out. This season sets up a lot of future plot lines for the rest of the show but in-between all of that some of the best character moments happen in this season.

This is a long one but bare with me guys: Carmine has proven at every point in this series to be a more powerful and effective boss than Tony. Where Tony is indulgent (staring at the two strippers at that one party while Carmine was locked into the high-level conversation), Carmine is focused. Where Tony is quick to anger we almost never see that of Carmine. Even during meetings Carmine has Johnny Sack speaking for him right there as he quietly eats his pasta. Power moves like that come easily to him while the “power moves” we associate from Tony is him screaming and throwing things around like a Toddler. This is demonstrated best at that same conversation infront of those two strippers at Chrissy’s making party where Carmine acknowledges Tony’s therapy and black outs. On the surface he is playing the friendly concerned father figure, but through subtext Carmine is saying “i see how weak and vulnerable you are as a leader. together our families make a lot of money together, so stay in your lane and don’t get in over your head, we can exploit your weaknesses just as easily as we can find them.” And afterwards Tony can only quietly submit. Carmine is the one male character in this show he feels truly powerless against. Possibly the only character. Tony is likely well aware of this, and everything i listed above. And it drives Tony insane. Carmine especially knows this. Notice the dynamics in future meetings between these two bosses and Tony’s face in how he reacts to that dynamic.

if you guys didn’t know, Chris’s mother from this episode is played by a different actor than the one that is at the hospital after Chris gets shot but it’s really one of those switches that goes over your head if you never end up noticing because i didn’t know till after my 2nd or 3rd rewatch of the series 😭

“A Don doesn’t wear shorts” funny enough James Gandolfini got a random call one night he answered it and a mafia Sounding guy said “hey, I like what you doing over there but one thing a Don does not wear shorts” and hanged up never heard from again and that’s the reason they added it into the show

Whenever a murder occurs & it’s a little open ended... analyzing the last words of the dying man will answer a lot of questions. Jimmy’s execution for example. And this one. It’s a pattern the writers seemed to establish. A man doesn’t lie when he knows he’s speaking his last words.

During the episode, I noticed Tony had 1-on-1 close up with 2 outsiders. The nurse and later on, Adriana's friend (the undercover agent). It makes me wonder if both of them were working for the FBI, and they were drawn to Tony because he's the end game of their investigation.

Tony Sirico (Paulie) had back surgery and couldn't work regular hours for some chunk of the season, so they put him in jail to explain the absence. Some people think that episode three feels a bit off because one of the stories feels like a Paulie story they had to give to someone else.
