It's great seeing the extra tidbits in between chapters get so much love! As someone who watched the anime first, having those parts in the manga made it a lot more worthwhile to go through the story again. It's particularly fun to see someone from a primarily literary background get into one piece, so I'm looking forward to what you think of the story going forward! An important distinction between Luffy and other stories with stretchy powers is Luffy is rubber. He doesn't simply stretch freely, but rather he's more like a pulled rubber band. So whenever he uses his ability, he tends to have a really snappy quality to it.

Small correction about the live action. While Luffy and Usopp are talking in the kitchen (before Usopp and Zoro go to the basement to find Merry's dead body), Usopp mentions his dad by name, and Luffy calls out that he hung out with him. It's a small moment, so it's understandable to not remember it from a single viewing of the show.

I think one of the most interesting things in watching a new "generation" of OP fans coming up is seeing how they enjoy different things in different ways and it's one of the things the Live action show somehow managed to replicate really well. It's interesting to see you talk about the FUN aspect and the joy you find in it as it really seems to mirror some of the statements Oda has made himself about the how and why he makes One Piece. And it might even be one of the reasons it was the "less popular" of the big 3 back in the day, a lot of teens probably found it to be too childish or silly but there are few things better than a story that can both make you laugh and also cry, in the same chapter.

I really hope your dad changes his mind about 'Zolo'. It's actually what's stopping me from getting the official english-translated copies. It's one of those things where a company double downs on a mistake they made. That infuriates me. At first, sure, it could've been an honest mistake but the official name given by the author himself and all other media has been confirmed yet the official translation refuses to budge. I know it's a small thing but I feel like that should matter. Anyway, I'm glad he's here for the journey! We will watch your career with great interest! Welcome, Dad Piece!

One thing I like about Luffy's Gomu powers is he's not an amorphous blob who can just alter his bodies shape at will. He's gotta do things that build up force and momentum one way for it to snap back the other way, or breath in air to expand himself, or get pulled on by an outside force. Also that his whole body follows the rule of being rubberized. His bones, organs, and blood vessels are rubber, have the properties of rubber, with all it's strengths and weaknesses and he just has to learn how to make it work.

Richard, think of Zoro's name like this hypothetical situation: Imagine a character who is a guitarist and vocalist, and his name is Eric. The translator messes up the r/l and translates it as Elic, but everyone knows it's really Eric. Are you going to continue to call him Elic just because Eric Clapton exists and the comparison upsets you, or are you going to call him Eric because it's just a name and two people can have the same name at once? The more you read, the more the story will cast new light on what you have read. (I think that sentence makes sense🤔) The further you go in the story The more it will re contextualise previous chapters (Trying to say this without any context is hard😂) Basically there’s always something keeping the previous chapters fresh with a new (light/ perspective/ revelation) Always love watching a first time round one piece experience (everyone picks up on different things) (Maybe Momma peaches would be willing to join the discussion for her favourite arc?)

As a big time One Piece Lover, I'd say Gen X Dad would also like Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Remember that while both anime follow the first half of the manga, Brotherhood is the one that came out later and accurately follows the entire manga and is the one that is recommended to watch.

Omg. Personally for me the least liked chapters were upto Ch 26, because everything was slow and the story felt okay-ish. Esp usopp arc was the weakest for me (I began my journey with anime and so my opinion about initial chapters are colored by the anime effects more). But After this is where i started to fall in love with the series. I cant wait to hear your view about the future chapters!

So there is some jadedness that people who are caught up with the manga have, but it actually has next to nothing to do with the story itself. Once you're caught up you can't buy large form volumes like the one you've been using, you can only read 1 chapter per week usually from an online source since waiting for the english volume release would take another several weeks. It's very much like watching cartoons as a kid where only 1 episode airs per week and then they say "Join us next week for the next exciting installment". You're super psyched when you see it, you talk with your friends about it the next day at school, and then you're cold turkey for the next 6 days. People love the chapters as much as they always have, if not even more, but the drip feed of content turns some people away who only check in once every few months to catch up and then wait another several months before reading again.

Oh I totally understand the Freshness, and being so happy seeing the Cover stories, and Funny art and craft things, along with Fan mails and answers. I have been following this since 2017, an anime only guy, recently purchased the Box Set 1, and Oda's art in the Manga just amused me the best. My mother, 63, started her anime journey in 2023 Feb, on just the basis of her kindness when I asked her to try this out...now she is around ep 950..its a great feeling to talk about it with the fam.

I just discovered your videos, and I'm so glad I did. I love the dynamic and enthusiasm here. Richard, something you mentioned was that Luffy uses Helmeppo as a shield without a second thought. What I love about Luffy is that he does not have an inner dialogue, and acts accordingly based on the situation. Luffy is a very smart character, even though he may act like a fool. Even now, over 1000+ chapters later, we are still discovering who Luffy really is as a person. 21:39 You also mentioned how the action sequences are hard to see in the manga, which I agree. I highly recommend watching the fight scenes in the anime. That way you can avoid the cacophonous screaming and enjoy the action panels come to life in the anime. You two earned one more subscriber! I'm looking forward to seeing more in the future.

Love seeing you both laugh together, your conversations are relaxed and detailed at the same time I think Usopp's story in the manga is better than in the LA, he's contrasted with Kuro brilliantly. Usopp lies for good reasons, is brave and passionate about his dreams, while Kuro lies for selfish reasons and is cowardly, giving up on his dream. It really felt like the LA Luffy had no reason to let Usopp join the crew Love the Everything Everywhere All at Once comparison! Your dad's perspective as a lit teacher feels incredibly fresh!

I am caught up on the manga/anime and I'm excited for "The One Piece" by WIT studios, but I want to see One Pace, I just don't know how. 😂 Some of my favorite parts are the goofyness of the crew dynamics in the early days. When they get sharp teeth I think it's funny. The crew is a bit on the wild side 😂 strap in im excited for your journey. I like reading the manga but I also enjoy seeing it played out. I wish they didn't add the padding and stretched out stuff but I don't worry about that stuff myself. Anyways sorry for the long comment. The Zolo thing will probably bug me since I started one piece with the anime so I heard it first and am aware of the l/r situation with japanese (I later started some of the manga) am currently caught up with the manga… (I might have skipped from Alabasta manga to Whole Cake Island manga because I watched it already but also because I want to read the manga as I buy the volumes… and I just haven’t gotten around to getting more of the 3 volume One Piece Volumes) However I do think that part of Zoro/Zolo thing is to not confuse Zoro with Zorro and copyright issues I myself have issues with the Jimbei, Jinbe due to the translations and audio being inconsistent

When I started OP, I already have read a lot of manga. I though it was really childish (luffy), because he was like a child saying every 2 minutes "hey, I want that. Oh I want that..." ("I want to be the king of the pirates"). And it was really annoying. But today, luffy is still as childish, but it's fun. Why? Because he is not alone. Others have the focus too. When Nami is following the story, luffy is doing something childish in the back. Or something was happening then luffy takes the center role and does something unexpected. And of course, he is not only childish, he can be serious and everything. So you are following a crew, not luffy. And regarding the fact to watch newcomers to OP is always fun, because we know what will happen, and you makes assumptions (we probably made ages ago) and... surprise! You see that the plan was not the one you expected! And that's always funny. Or you see the sad things you did not see them coming. As we did.

Gotta agree with Gen X Dad. The anime gave a lot of moments life beautifully, but the manga is just much more enjoyable when you're trying to catch up to this series. Many jokes are stretched out to the point it's less funny in the anime, but that and slower pacing is normal for any anime from this era, so it's not necessarily One Piece's fault Everyone has preferences but I gotta say reading the manga and later looking for some anime clips of favorite panels or chapters is the best way to experience the series. Tho this first saga was done decently well, so I don't blame people for preferring the anime version in the east blue, but later sagas can be a little more hit and miss. Just gotta roll with the punches that some translations (official vs fanmade) have some word choices between them that later turn out to be mistakes because they couldn't get some words or names were secretly plot relevant and/or word play, or just simple goofs. I can't explain the intrinsic details of Japanese but long story short, Ls and Rs in English are both pronounced with the same syllables in Japanese(la, le, li, lo, lu = ra, re, ri, ro, ru), so when you have to translate Japanese to English it can be ambiguous which letter to choose because it can depend on context that isn't immediately given. So I might recommend not to lock into the first spelling you see of names, it may or may not change. (Zolo vs Zoro is fine, there's no ambiguity because it's the same moss head who you're talking about and are both valid spellings) Or sometimes the translators may decide not to even translate a name at all, because some names don't have a direct English translation while other names are simple puns, but they want to be consistent in leaving names translated or untranslated (Non spoiler examples: the French pirate Lolonois, which the Japanese pronounce Roronoa, for Zoro's namesake, but no one is going to spell it Lolonois for One Piece. Or how some call Luffy's hometown Fusha village, while others translate it to Windmill village, so it shows how translators sometimes make decisions to pick between what is more accurate, what might make more sense, or just what they feel is simplest. It's very subjective when there're different layers the author could be conveying that may not be immediately picked up by the translator) Final thought/recommendedation: avoid looking up characters because you will get some spoilers. As an audience member, it's more fun to see you give your own guesses and theories based on what you have read than to see you get spoiled.

Watched the anime many many times in rewatched and during the hype of the live action before it came out, and wano arc hype, as well continuing where I left off from the anime to manga, but I saw a TikTok from a op content creator talk about purchasing the box set of the manga that inspired me to get the manga box sets and I read them all for the first time from chapter 1 I started in June or July and reached vol 104 in November when they released it, the manga I enjoyed it way more than the anime. But love the anime it’s still my favorite but the manga is my favorite manga too
