I remember one of these being the grand prize at a charity raffle at (I think) my younger brother's school. Powermat doesn't make consumer products anymore but they developed a lot of the fundamentals of wireless charging technology and own a bunch of patents for it; I believe they get a royalty for every set of Airpods sold.

My uni is partnered with this company, and they genuinely do make good wireless charging things. Our library has them built into the desks. All you have to do is set your phone on the table and it starts to charge. It’s honestly great for when you’re working on something. In this case I think they were looking ahead to the future before the technology was ready lol

I worked at a certain big box electronics retailer when this came out. We got a HUGE shipment for the holiday season that year... and sold almost none of them. We ended the season with a bulk bin of these three-quarters full and several returns. People complained it required too much precision to get it to charge, if they didn’t get it in just the right spot it didn’t work. Nothing like getting yelled at for something you didn’t design.

You say “Generic Technology Sound” but I had a version of this made specifically for the 3GS back when that was still cutting edge, and i used to take my phone off and put it back on just for the noise. @Liggliluff
@Liggliluff 3 жыл бұрын
- Wireless charging requires more power to charge the same amount, since they are less effective. - If you have a wireless charger that can only charge on device; instead of having the cable plugged into the charger, plug it straight into your phone; faster charging, less waste of energy. - The common argument for why wires are annoying, is because you have to plug and unplug it from the wall ... just don't unplug it from the wall then. "But I need the cable with me"; just buy a second cable. You spend all that money on the charging pad; you could have spent that on several cables instead.

@@kyraptor2521 The worst part about people using this as an argument for anything is that the leads on the cord are airgapped at the end, it's wasting no more power than the outlet itself is. These people probably also avoid touching any wire for fear of electrocution, even ones that aren't attached to anything.

I actually owned one of these for my iPhone 3GS, and the case that attached to the iPhone had a huge rectangular protruded plastic piece on the back of the case that defeated the whole purpose of "wireless" in 2009, because it became 2x heavier. To all those who wanted to know, it had a magnetic snap-on mechanism that was shown in the video that positioned the device on the right location of the mat which was followed by the swirl sound.

the part that you missed is they sold phone specific battery covers that would convert the phone to wireless charging and you could use it with the power mat. When everyone went to non removable batteries you could no longer get the conversion kits. Also they were kind of pricey so it was a tough sell.

Oh man Powermat, that's some nostalgia straight to the veins. I had a touch and was constantly wanting one of these just because they seemed so futuristic. I only just got wireless charging in the last year, and it's exactly as awesome as I always dreamed.

Dude, I remember seeing these in JB Hi-Fi back in the their heyday for a good $150+. I just remember thinking "who the hell would spend that much just so they didn't have to use CORDED charging?" In 2020, I now realise how much of a pleb I was.

I remember seeing a big display for this at a computer store when I was a kid. They even had a spokeswoman from the company there too. Even back then I didn't get the point, it just adds another step after plugging the wire into the device (or using a super bulky case on already bulky 2000s electronics)

*Fun Fact :* Wireless charging was actually a thing on consumer phones even back then, it was actually Palm's Touch Stone, the brand from which both Apple and Android copied OS elements, iPhone 12's magnetic magsafe is actually how palm phones attached to Touch Stone, @DankPods you collect iPods, Palm's Pre and HP Veer are both good collectables, on side note Nokia N9 too

This company was bought by Duracell a couple years later. I used to have one of these mats and a phone case for iPhone 4, and the little charging brick which was a power bank that charged from it. It was amazing. I loved it so much. And it made a little noise when you put it to charge.

Here in Canada, they sold those for years. Eventually one of my friends got the DS lite battery adapter, it was futuristic to drop the console onto the charger before bed ! But it bulked up the DS quit a bit... Awesome throwback !

Could someone explain to me why wireless charging is such a big deal? I get wanting to get rid of wires, but it ties your phone down more than a cable...
@lungshenli
@lungshenli 4 жыл бұрын
if you just want the device charging, just laying it onto a dedicated surface is easier than plugging a cable in. minor difference but hey
@emulatorgaminguk2751
@emulatorgaminguk2751 4 жыл бұрын
Lots of benefits, you don’t damage or scratch your phone by trying to plug a wire in, and putting it on a surface to charge eliminates this risk, also it’s easier to use in the dark or something, and a cable won’t pull your device off a table or anything.

Amoraxus Uhh, by scraping the charger on the charging port to plug it in? It happened on my OnePlus 5? It probably shows why some phones are poorly designed because most people lack common sense lol.

Amoraxus Well that’s your problem, also, it’s called anodised metal/aluminium. It’s hard to plug your phone charger in whilst in the dark.

You do understand that and 2009 they didn't have the receiver built into every device like they have to day so your phone would have to have a back pack case to receive the power and you need the charging dock to receive the power but at least it got rid of the chords even if you needed a docking station. Or maybe you don't understand how the system works. You could add "not bad for the time" to the end, instead of tossing it out the window.
