A Wrinkle in Time is a 2018 American science fantasy adventure film directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Jennifer Lee and Jeff Stockwell, based on Madeleine L'Engle's 1962 novel of the same name. Can't say I blame 'em. This film is like a Cannoli: looks good, but not too filling. The story does come off as pretentious, the whole thing feels like a drug trip from a Stimulant-Depressant-Hallucinogenic cocktail, and it seems to lack substance outside of visuals.

And that one episode from drag race s1 when they did a oprah episode. Other from that...... never watch her show or know much about her. My knowledge about her is so bad i needed to look at how ner name was spelled. I literally spelled her name 'Opera' at first then i looked into if that's how you spell her name. Is that her real name??

Y'know what killed this movie for me? The overly formal dialogue. One of the smartest things "Lord of the Rings" did was take the essence of Tolkien's original words and make it seem like normal conversation. This dialogue is so formal it almost doesn't even have contractions. It's hard to get swept up in the magic when people are saying "Is this not wonderful?"

What I hated about this movie was the generic “Be yourself” message. Wait, no, not “Be yourself,” it’s “be unique”. I’ve always hated this because it’s both the most cliche message, ironic, I know, but also the most problematic. I ultimately do believe that being yourself is okay, so long as you aren’t doing something morally wrong. The problem, everyone who listens to this message is ungodly arrogant, as well as terrible. They try to apply this message to the worst aspects of themselves.

It's also more or less so broad and generic that it's meaningless. If the theme were something more specific, like "overcoming internal shame", "dealing with past trauma and emotional scars", or "working hard to develop the skills you have", you might nave a good moral. "Be yourself" really doesn't tell you anything.
@ZemeckisTEN
@ZemeckisTEN 5 жыл бұрын
Count of Monte Cristo THANK YOU!!!! I’m so sick and tired of that cliched moral. It’s been done to death in about 85% of family friendly films (mostly animated films) for the past couple of decades at least. It’s rare nowadays when that moral is done right. A film I can think of as an example that did the moral right was The Peanuts Movie. Charlie Brown, throughout the film was trying to impress the Little Red Haired Girl by doing certain things to impress her. But those things didn’t go well for him one way or another. Long story short, at the end of the film, she tells Charlie Brown that she likes him for being himself. A selfless, kind kid who does the right thing. And it was done very well. But a lot of the time, the moral is done so predictably bad. I wish filmmakers would find different morals to teach instead of playing the safe, generic route by saying “be yourself”.

Honestly I feel like they whitewashed the story for lack of a better term. They removed anything that made the characters look bad or be interesting. Meg's unattractiveness and anger, Charles Wallace's quiet intelligence, Calvin's poverty and abuse at home. Not to mention the town thought Mr. Murray ran off because he had an affair, because his work was top secret and the government wasn't telling the Murray family anything. I really doubt it would be announced on the radio. I get that things have to be cut and rearranged but the story feels more like A Wrinkle in Time fanfiction with Meg as the Mary Sue protagonist

@@owenwilkinson3949 "Whitewashing" in the sense that they covered over or watered down the stories deeper themes and symbolism, as often happens to kids' movies. At least I think that was what the commenter meant, I can't read his or her mind. The Time Quartet had a good deal of social criticism for the culture of the 50s, but also a lot of spiritual/mystical/religious symbolism worked into the science fiction. Angels who used quantum leaps and time traveling back to the days of Noah's flood, battling demonic forces inside a mitochondria and the like. THAT was the stuff that got whitewashed in general (although to be fair most of the examples I specifically mentioned happened in later books). All of that got watered down into the more Disneyeqse "Believe in yourself and be happy with your Hollywood child model body" message that they more or less shove into every other film.

I remember seeing the trailer for this movie. I didn’t know at the time that it was based on a book, so I just judged what I saw. And despite how unique it thought it was being, it was the most cliche trailer I’ve ever seen! -Awkward teenager -The dead and/or missing father -Mystical Beings who maintain order in the universe -A being of pure darkness (no evil, darkness) trying to destroy the universe -The Love interest that adds nothing to the story other than... love interest -“Have faith in who you are.” -“Do you trust me?” Need I go on?

To be fair the book is old enough that some of those weren't cliches at the time it was written, or at least not as cliche. This movie somehow managed to capture all the self satisfaction and none of the charm that the novel has. That's almost impressive in a weird way.

In the original story, Ms. Whatsit is supposed to be a white dwarf star, which, according to astrophysics, should be a gigantic diamond as the tremendous gravitational pressure would have compressed the exhausted fused carbon atoms into a crystaline structure. In the original opening of Steven Universe, Connie is holding a copy of "A Wrinkle in Time", bringing to mind that aspect of the story in regards to the Gems or, more appropriately, the Diamonds. This indicates that White Diamond herself is a white dwarf star and that was the foundation of the Gem race. ...Absolutely nothing of what I said has anything to do with this movie, but it is something that makes sense without being pretentious and it does involve "A Wrinkle in Time".
@Nissim1795
@Nissim1795 5 жыл бұрын
White dwarf stars are not diamonds, they are electron-degenerate matter (the atoms are as close as possible without the electron shells overlapping). I'm not sure exactly how that relates to a "crystaline structure" but even if that was true they are mainly helium, not carbon.

@@Nissim1795"White dwarf star" can mean a dead stellar core, an F or G type dwarf, or a neutron star. Calvin was intended as the person who helps balance Meg because she was self conscious and angry due to her self image issues. Meg was way more relatable in the books. She hated herself and didn’t see herself as anything good. She was protective of her brother. But she was also jealous of how much of a genius he was. Charles looked up to Meg which I think baffled her. She didn’t find her father until MUCH later. Calvin and Charles helped Meg find her self confidence. The story was supposed to be about finding herself and learning to not have so much self deprecation. It was an inspirational story and it makes me sad how horrible the movie did this story justice.

You're so right. It's kind of gross really. Even after meeting and speaking with atheists she doesn't understand how someone can be moral without God. She and Steve Harvey both have that same willful ignorance and disdain of non-Christians. But hey, she knows her audience and they are loyal and willing to pay to gobble up any media she throws at their feet.

Diogenes Diogenes Well that depends on if those “Atheists” were actual Atheists or the not-atheists, this list explains it: Anti-Theism An anti-theist is an emotionally-unstable person who will go into screaming rage about the evils of any religion because the other choir boys didn't try to rape him, thus leaving him with an acute inferiority complex. An atheist is more or less the same thing, but instead of 'I didn't get to fuck the hottest girl in school!' it's 'why didn't God stop me from getting my head slammed in a locker!?' Of the different breeds of atheist, this type is by far the most painful to be around. Richard Dawkins and most of atheism's other "pastors," fall into this category. Nihilism Nihilism is the philosophical doctrine suggesting that values do not exist but rather are falsely invented. Frequently cited by deep thinkers and faux-Nietzschean assmunches who never moved out of their parent's basement. As well as being stupid, this is extremely sociologically dangerous. Atheists tread narrow paths bordering on this mindset, and like much of what we have provided it's the main reason why you'd avoid this shit if you know what's good for you. Friendliness Unfortunately for these quasi-atheists, pro-theist atheists (better known as weak atheists, but that seems a bit redundant) are also the target of atheists - because anyone who supports religion in any way i.e. "believing in belief", going to a church funeral or wedding, or donating to a religious charity will be savagely ripped apart by their fellow atheists for being a Christ enabler and denounced as traitors. SJW On the surface, a SJW is just your typical raging Tumbltard feminist. On closer inspection, we see a creature that lives and acts in the exact same manner as atheists, effectively swapping its "religion" for screaming about rape culture and patriarchy. There's a significant overlap between these two groups because of Atheism+, and it shows! Because both beliefs are founded on evidence-less bullshit, shit-flinging any opposition is the creatures' primary defense mechanism ("Stupid sheeple irrational moron!", "Stupid oppressive misogynistic cis scum!"). This creates an opening for the creature to insert its own generalizations of the other party if namecalling fails them ("Fuck you, religious people like you oppress people every day! Just look at Islam!"/"Fuck you, men oppress people every day! Just look at GamerGate"). When their bullshit accusations are used in turnabout, they'll resort to one of three things, they'll either (1) make their accusations more extreme ("Religion is responsible for all of the wars ever fought!"/"Men are responsible for all of the wars ever fought!"), (2) try to redefine or brush their "weaker members" under the rug to save face, completely oblivious to the irony ("So what if some atheists are bad? Atheism is just the lack of theism, so there's a lot of people in that group! Are you saying all atheists are bad because of a minority?"/"So what if some feminists are bad? Feminism is just the belief in gender equality, so there's a lot of secret feminists out there! Are you saying all feminists are bad because of a minority!"), or (3) challenge you to debate every single point on some bullshit list of "proofs" that they found off of google/tumblr, without verifying its authenticity (also known as Gish Gallop). Because of the overlap, the two groups behave in almost the exact same ways. The difference is that SJWs are smart enough to gang up on and harass people irl, while Atheists nowadays just stick to their own little flame wars for e-points. Not atheism Agnosticism Agnostics are known for 'not knowing' and are generally regarded as pussies by both Christians and atheists for not making up their minds. They are the few people on the planet honest enough to admit that they don't know shit. Note: This one is debatable. Often, atheists will try to impose two binaries on the agnostic, that you are a combination of theist/atheist and gnostic/agnostic, which is a crock of bullshit. Unless God has personally come down to blow your dick, then you can't know if God exists. You probably couldn't confirm that it would be God anyway, since if you believe this questionable logic, we suspect that you are the type of person who is susceptible to being drugged behind a McDonald's dumpster. In other words, atheists will attempt prove that no explicit agnostics exist, "proving" their point with logic that assumes no explicit agnostic stance exists. Just what would be an agnostic theist anyway? Deists Another word for agnosticism. A deist is someone who believes a God did create the universe but got too bored and promptly fucked off. Technically they are monotheists just like Christians and Muslims but live like atheists since the god they believe in doesn't give a shit about what they get up to. Apatheists Apatheists are atheists, agnostics, deists, whateverists who simply don't care about religion, god, or anything related to the two. They don't make a scene and don't start arguments, unlike your token atheist. In other words, how it should be. This breed is unfortunately scarce to the point of many believing them to be a myth altogether. Ietsism Aka. "somethingism". These people may believe in God, gods, universal life force, Heaven, Hell, Xenu, Souls or something else entirely. Whilst agnostics are generally indecisive fence-sitters, ietsists are confused as while they believe in something, no one (not least themselves) actually know what it is.

You know Disney will gonna make a generic boring live action movie if you see: -The actors and actresses in colorful makeup and fancy Victorian Clothes. -Oscar winners or Veteran Actors or Actresses in it. -The trailer has a visual effect which looks like you're on drugs and black backgrounds -The dialogues are too cliche. "The power of love or the power of friendship will help you" -Obvious CGI. Seriously, Disney. Just stick to make new animated movie instead of rebooting the old one.

Well actually the Jungle Book 2016 movie was okay, and there are some good things about Mary Poppins Returns and Aladdin 2019. In Mary Poppins Returns, there will be scenes where they actually bring back 2D animation. And for Aladdin 2019, Alan Menken is returning to do do the music for the movie, and they’re recycling Frank Welker’s lines as the Cave of Wonders

They cant make original live action movies. Example: lone ranger, john carter, prince of persia, tomorrowland, wrinkle in time, nutcracker, etc. Pirates after pirates 1 decline in terms of critical reception and tron despite not being bad doesnt attract a lot of people attention. They can only make live action films by remaking it from their animated ones like jungle book, beauty and the beast, cinderella. Even maleficent despite being a bad movie got a lot of money. No wonder they bought lucasfilm and marvel and now, fox

@@Sorcerer-SMC Wasn't Mary Poppins a live action film already? And even if some of the remakes aren't awful, I'm still tired of seeing yet another remake or reboot. There are still hundreds of famous folk tales and childrens books Disney hasn't adapted yet, I just wish they'd go back to doing the epic 2D animated films that made them famous in the first place.

Gertrud Bondesson like I said, Mary Poppins Returns is technically doing that in one of the parts. Also they’ve actually adapted Little Red Riding Hood in a short called “The Big Bad Wolf” featuring the 3 little pigs. And they technically adapted Hansel and Gretel into a Mickey Mouse Works short with the same name. But after seeing most of the seasons of Once Upon a Time. I’m actually hoping Disney makes a 2D animated film of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Or even an animated reboot of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
