The Airbus A321neo has seen a significant rise, and with the upcoming A321XLR, its capabilities are going to increase tenfold. But why do airlines want more single-aisle aircraft over larger aircraft types? Are there any benefits, and what do airline customers think about this?

Just took my first flight since childhood (I'm 33 now) on an A321Neo from Nashville to LA. It was smoother than any vehicle or craft I've ever been in. Brand new plane. Great experience.

Great video. Narrow body aircraft are great. (So long as you are in a quiet relaxing Airbus)

You ignore the effect that long haul narrow bodies will have on hub & spoke operations. Many passengers were forced to take regional flights to huge hubs but with the a321 can now go direct. Long thin routes are the future because hubs have become people processors and impersonal stressful experiences. There is room for a few hubs like Dubai but direct long haul from secondary cities to secondary destinations will increase as pax experience the actual comfort that single aisle air raft can offer. Long haul jet travel was founded on single aisle aircraft and we are now simply bringing the convenience of such services to a far wider range of cities. It is an unstoppable movement.

I've flown a number of times on Phillipine Airlines A321 between Brisbane & Manilla in Business Class. Fully Lie down flat beds. Very comfortable with excellent cabin crew service. Fewer total passengers with faster times processing through the airports.

The a321 neo is compatible with a lot of airlines' operation because of its flexibility and excellent engineering. This reflects upon the incessant demand of the a321 neo as it helps carriers to open up new routes thanks to the enhanced capabilities of this aircraft.

Flown the Atlantic (STN-YYZ) on an A321neo (on a now defunct airline). Great flights both ways. And don' forget back in the '60s all flights were narrow bodies. Got nearly 100 hours on VC10s, including LHR-JHB return on two occasions, and no complaints.

Air Cda currently use a 737Max from Halifax NS to London Heathrow, hopefully they will switch to the A321 XLR when they rec their aircraft..also on the domestic side looks like Porter is using the E195 on the Ottawa - Halifax route instead of Dash Q400s

More likely they'll use the A321XLRs on even longer routes where the Max can't reach.. Like Ottawa to Heathrow or Frankfurt, or Montreal to Marseille or Manchester.

You could say the A321 is entering the niche that the 757 occupied. In reality, when we fly on a widebody we are on one aisle or the other so I dont feel much benefit as long as the seat pitch is OK. Lots of our UK holiday flights are on TUI, their 737's have 189 seats and a 28 inch seat pitch, their 788's have 33 inch seat pitch. That is a huge difference and makes the flight much better on the widebody. You wouldnt want that 28 inch pitch across the Atlantic.

I didn't see any narrow body/wide body sales comparison over years in the video. Previously A320 was the best selling Airbus variant. Now A321 is. It looks like airlines want *larger* aircraft.

It's a decent gap filler between the A320 and A330. Both, in capacity and range. While being easy to include in already existing A320 operations, keeping costs low. But indeed, the costs per passenger compared to A320 and A330 (B787) would be interesting.

The A321neo and A321LR have found their niche as 757-200 replacements. That's why both American and Delta plan to have large fleets of the A321neo planes in service.

...the one benefit, serving what are known as thin long range markets (like to Manchester UK or Milwaukee in the States) that as mentioned would not generate the passenger loads sufficient to support operating a 787 or A330.. Some airlines, like Icelandic and Delta, are currently using aging 757-200s in such markets and would benefit from a more efficient newer technology aircraft. Delta does have 321 Neos in their inventory, but not the LR or XLR versions.

It is all about making money. Qantas will operate its A321XLR with 200 seats compared with 236 in the much larger 787-9. Clearly Qantas does not rate comfort as important in long-haul single aisle. An A321 with sardine seats 240. 787-9 in sardine configuration will carry 420. That is 80% of cabin capacity v 50% of cabin capacity. 9 hours in a QF A321XLR will test passengers' endurance and has already been criticised by travel writers. Other airlines seem to think 180 pax is a better number for the A321XLR

Narrowbody operators now want capacity + range as an option A321neo fits perfectly, Boeing got this completely wrong by not offering a 757neo

If the new model helps define new markets more effectively go for it. That's what has happened since the DC2 became the DC3. Try something where there is a visible demand that is different from what we can measure with current aircraft. The A321 family seems to be this generation's toolkit to test new markets.😊

It's actually an issue for airlines operating the A220 already, as the A320 family isn't compatible. For airlines operating the A320 family, including the A321 is easy, thus operational cost are staying low. Using the A321 LR or XLR enables an airline to test new long range routes with far less operational costs, replacing them with wide-bodies the moment passenger numbers are going beyond the A321 capacity. But there are questions remaining. What is the cost per passenger compared to a widebody? And actually, can airlines freely chose the seat pitch? Short haul seats are a nightmare on long routes.

6 hours max on a single isle. Longer flights need more room. I would sooner pay a bit more for a bit more room. I think it is worth it.

People buy flights on flight times and price. If people want comfort, they'll buy a seat with more leg-room. That is what matters. A lie flat is a lie flat. Who cares if there are only 4 across? I would prefer that.
