Apart from CAD, Photoshop and carbon fiber, which hadn’t been invented yet, I have been witnessing right here pretty much every step of the design and construction process of racing car prototypes at Porsche in Weissach in the 1960s to bring the 917 to life. Thank you, Sir! In your car I found that you must like the GT40, the Dino and the 917.

HaHa! Yeah, pretty amazing what they could build back in the days of T-squares and slide rules. Still applicable today when you can't afford CATIA and Autoclaves. Indeed, I love the aforementioned cars, but you might take a look again at Ferrari's 1964 250LM for a more direct connection to lineage of my inspiration. Arete is a bit of a tribute car to Sergios Pinninfarina and Scaglietti and what they might have built if they brought back the LM today.

I find it more convenient to pour the hardener (smaller quantity) first, because it's easier to multiply by 4 in my head than it is to multiply by 1.3333, and also because it's easier to be accurate (percentage-wise) when pouring the larger quantity.

Normally the structure around the windshield is reinforced and I’m very surprised you haven’t used a U shaped steel element running around the windshield and down to the main chassis. Also, I see you intend to directly bind the windshield to the frame and if there is any body flex there is a very high chance the windshield will crack. A really great project though :).
@BuilderCreator3 жыл бұрын
More reinforcement to go. Urethane bonding directly to the frame makes the windshield part of the structure. Some cars even use the windshield as part of their roll over protection. True that flex can be a problem. . . we will just have to eliminate it.

You asked about gel coats. We used a lightweight sprayable polyester filler called feather fill as a primer. You catalyzed it like a polyester resin and in about an hour and a half it was ready to sand and it would fill in any small imperfections.
@BuilderCreator4 жыл бұрын
KZbin shows you as a new subscriber. Thanks for following the channel. I've tried Feather fill as well as directly spraying automotive primer into the mold before lamination. I've found that I'm just not that good of a composites fabricator as I seem to always find some area that needs a little sanding attention; then its back to bringing out the primer again. Perhaps in a production set up you could get into a routine and the errors corrected. As I rarely build a run of any item, I have learned just to sand and prime before painting.

Roll structures 😡😡😡😡😡 That's a very sore subject with me. Of course you can make a roll structure into the car that would support 40 tons on the car using high modulus carbon covered with Kevlar to avoid shards and spikes in the event of an impact. You can do the same inside of the car doors. However, none of that is acceptable. You need a ridiculous 1 1/2 or 1 5/8 mild steel or cromoly tubing roll cage going everywhere in .118 or .083 wall thickness. It has to be fully welded with no bolted components. To make it invisible somewhat you have to use it as structure for A pillar, B pillar, under dash pedal and accessory mounts, roof skin mount and get certification. Then build the interior over it. Obviously video documenting the build and certification process. Every sanctioning body varies but I don't know of any allowing removable cages.

The upper levels of TimeAttack is the only place where I might likely venture, so it would be an "event only" bolt in system. After looking over those rules I think we can manage it. First off I would have to get the car done, then become proficient enough to even compete. Ha!

There are boltin options allowed, such as in SCCA. Check the rules. Here's an example of how to use tube connectors for this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6DRaYGimtJ9irM
@curvs4me3 жыл бұрын
@@Stoneface_Garage That's a beautiful system! NHRA previously allowed 1 5/8 cromo and bolt in cross bar and door bars. They have upended everything and changed to 1 1/2D 0.083 wall cromo or 0.118 wall steel minimum cage perimeter and uprights. Every organization/sanctioning body eventually gets to bureaucratic for it's own good. They make rule changes annually to justify their bloated existence. Cages can not only be made with composites effectively, they can be made far stronger. Tubular components are not a necessity. A lot of the European Bodies allow for composite safety cages. There have been no deaths or serious injury in drag racing at 6 second and longer run times for 16 years! 16 years ago you could run in the 10s without a cage at all. Now anything less than 11:50 requires an 8 point fully welded including the floor mount pads cage. Under 8:50 requires a full tubular prison cell around you. It's ludicrous. They should also give major credit to newer vehicles. They're made with lighter materials by area but a lot more of them. Roughly 1000 pounds (half a ton) heavier than their 60s and 70s counterparts. That's just me venting. However, when bodies make rule changes for the sake of making changes when no injuries have occurred what is the point. They start going insane dwelling on things that are a billion to one odds against as if it's a given.

NASA and SCCA are the governing bodies that hold time attack and as for track days most tracks have their own days but they usually use SCCA regulations for race cars and for street cars you just get a basic safety inspection . Though most of those days have limits on passing and driver aggression that will end your day if you drive unsafely . You can integrate the roll cage into the cars structure a removable cage IE a bolt in one isn't really legal for any racing that I know of I know that NASA here in the Mid Atlantic won't allow a bolt in cage in a time attack car . It's possible to race in some street classes of rally cross without a cage but only the lowest classes and your motor and the fact that it is a prototype so it doesn't have a class would make you have to race in the highest class available for the type of racing you wanted to try . It would still be fun you just might be stuck running with GT3's and Ferrari's or old NASCAR's .Oh look up the SCCA and request (buy ) a rule book figure you'll need whatever the minimum cage is for a fiberglass monocoque with a rear steel tube sub frame . I know there are race cars built this way I just can't think of an example that you could look up in the rule book ,but there's no way to have a removeable cage in a car that makes it race legal . It needs door bars for starters and it needs a bar under the dash as well as above the windshield at the roof line . A hoop doesn't really cut it , maybe to make yourself feel safer on track days .

You really need some to show you how to fiberglass properly, your car looks so nice you've done so much work , but you have to many air bubbles in your layer's. Stop thinking less resin means lighter no less resin means not a good bond . It's like cement you put steel in cement to keep it together but the cement is the strength like fiberglass you need more resin .and a bloody roller .
