The correct formula to get the Vref is: Vref = Imax * (8 * Rs), where Imax is the maximum current of your stepper motor, Rs is the sensitivity resistor of your A4988. The most common Rs is 0.1 ohms, but it may be different for you. The two sensitivity resistors are located near pins B2-B1, A1-A2. You can use an online SMD resistor calculator to get the sensitivity resistor value.

At 6:27 it says the NEMA17 motor uses a yellow wire for pin 1B. That's actually a black wire, as shown in the photo at 6:16. The motor I bought from Amazon also uses red, green, blue, and black.

2023 update!!! If your motor just rotates around kinda like wiggly and noisy(sorry for my English). plug 5V to Arduino's 5V line. And it works.

Is the 10uF capacitor for 5v input necessary, if the 5v/earth is provided by the Arduino? I have the 100uF cap on the high power (12v in this case) input.. Thanks!

Hi, ik this is an old video but I need help. I have a nema 23 set up with a potentiometer as per your instructions but the motor starts turning as soon as I turn the power on. Is there a way to keep it from starting automatically? I have tried different values of potentiometer but that made no difference. I am new to arduino and just trying to learn. Thanks for your time

You need some other tutorials for Nema23.

@@HowtoElectronics it does the same thing with a nema 17 so in this case I would think motor size is irrelevant. I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the pot because I know that they don't actually go down to zero resistance. I guess what I'm asking is there anything I can do with the Arduino code to keep the motor from starting automatically? Sorry for the confusion. I'm not completely new to building electronics just Arduino lol

Don't use A4988 for NEMA23. An A4988 is good for about 1.4 amps. For a 3.5 amp motor I would be looking for a driver than can provide 5 amps. Use Motor driver TB6600.

If you accidentally plug in the wires the opposite direction of the a4988, and run the current through, will it damage the a4988? I'm using it for the first time and hope I have created a short circuit it and destroyed the driver. I use an Original Arduino UNO because I have a macbook and macbooks don't read the bootleg versions properly. My stepper motor is not turning and I don't know what is wrong. Please help. I'm a student that wants to learn but I don't know where to turn to for help.

Hello, have you done any video to control direction of a stepper motor using two press buttons switches with Arduino Nano and A4988? Or else could you advice me to change the code in this video and where to connect the two switches. I need to run the motor only while I press the switch in one direction and to run the motor in other direction while pressing the other switch. Please advice me soon. Thank you.
