@cybertree3 жыл бұрын
I agree with 90% of the comments that engine first is *smarter* , but I'm with the creator on this one, motivation is important. I just finished resto-modding my 1969 bronco, and I made the "hasty" decision to paint it baby blue with white accents before the new transmission was even in, and it *supercharged* my passion for the project. Before I painted it, I was sort of in the mindset of just getting it done decently and quickly so I could drive it. But seeing it as the beauty it was to become, I really started to put my heart and soul into it. I even color matched most of the hardware and brakes and interior pieces. Although I had to be extra careful and use a blanket to work on the engine bay, the feeling I got seeing it first thing in the morning far outweighed that small nuisance, and I think that transferred to the project. You can always fix a scratch!

You could give the bodywork a coat of primer, that way people can see the car in something other than bare fibreglass and you don't need to worry about scratching a nice paint job, because you won't have done one yet, good compromise, I'd say. (And "bridging solution" sounds better than slurry, although it's not quite a bridging solution, but shsh, nevermind that)
@noanyobiseniss74623 жыл бұрын
Thats what we used to do but i think these days primers are not supposed to sit before base/clear but i'm sure someone more knowledgeable on the matter will chime in.

I think your at a crossroad where impatience could cost you alot of lost time in the future. My personal experience building showcars has proven that I have made this mistake tooo many times. I look forward to seeing what choices you make, but here is my 2cents>>> Get the chassis and running gear worked out before any final aesthetic choices, then finalize the engine and its cooling/lube systems. Then finish exterior panel mechanicals such as hinges and fasteners followed by mocking up the interior and fixing major panel gaps...... Now you get to put primer sealers etc before drive testing. Only when you finally get an OK on the shakedown do you jump into the aesthetic pool of finishing the project.

IMHO, I'd finish the structural bodywork and then shift to getting it to a rolling runner. Paint and bodywork may be compromised as you work through the mechanicals and its easiest to make changes prior to paint. As a compromise, you could switch it up on the interior and focus on this for the "pretty part" while you work on the mechanicals.

A car should be a machine moving under its own power primarily and just then a work of art, I definitely suggest to work on the mechanical side first and leave the paint job for the end. As an icing on the cake... Also, as many mentioned before - working on the power-train and suspension can cause (intentional of accidental) "modifications" to the body...
@KyberJedi3 жыл бұрын
I would love to see a shade of color on the car as well, but if it were me, I would worry about messing it up, scratching or damaging the paint while still wrapping up all the other bits and bobs. So, as much as I would love to see color, I would say wrap up the mechanics and perhaps move towards a sort of interior design. That's just my two cents. Love the content on both the Arete and Leviathan. It looks like so much hard work but I completely look forward to all your updates and videos. Best of luck to you.

II would wait on paint and get the mechanical stuff working. Reason being, you might run into issues with the design (clearances, fitment, airflow, cooling, etc.) which, if you did start doing paint/finishing, would require you to take another step back and make structural changes, which of course would require you to redo the paint and finishing again.
@sfcoawol62733 жыл бұрын
as someone that does bodywork and has done restorations the paintjob should be the very last thing you do, you would be surprised at how many ways you can damage a new paintjob

Ok. The gallery says mechanical. How about a compromise? Bonding primer tinted red, yellow or dark gray and full mechanical completion to a running and rolling chassis? 😃👍

I noticed the lack of room between the trans tunnel and the door and was wondering if you had seats picked out. If not, my best suggestion is the Recaro seats from an Evo 9. They are a slightly prevalent seat swap for the C5 corvette, which has a notoriously narrow seating area. They’re leather with an alcantara/microsuede center section, and they are well bucketed, but comfortable. They also have harness slots from the factory, and being stock seats, they can recline, and they’re crash tested. Final point is that they’re Recaro seats, which are very nice, but these aren’t super expensive. Just my thoughts.
@BuilderCreator3 жыл бұрын
The seats will be built in as part of the structure; at least the lower lumbar section. The upper (thoracic)area will hinge to allow access to storage, engine management electronics and heat/AC ducting. Pedals and steering wheel will adjust for driver changes.

As much as I would love to see it become pretty as soon as possible, I am also opposed to rework, and doing work on a finished surface presents the risk for rework. I don't know how much detail you are going to do in the engine bay, but If you are painting at all inside the engine bay, I would definitely do that before I did engine work, just to avoid interference issues. If it were me, I would paint the inside of the engine bay and cab, do engine work and cab work (seats, upholstry, etc), then exterior paint. and final fit, trim, and detail work.
