You can tell how much the writers adored Ben and how they'd developed him, he's not only the only villain who makes it through alive but they even give him what he always wanted a position under the protector. It's the role he always wanted to do for Jacob but was never allowed to. He's the new Richard essentially. It suits the new Ben far better than his old position of power which arguably led to him to become the selfish person he was for most of the shows length. It's a sad moment though when he admits he wasn't special. It's the thing he always wanted to be (making him very much like Jacob ironically) but never quite could be, despite claiming to be told he was by Richard. It must have been hard to be told all those things only for someone to come along who seems to be so much more special

@@bajscastTrue, it was spelled out clearly in the finale, but what I think really confused people was the b-roll footage of the plane wreckage on the beach during the final credits of the original airing. They just had some footage of the wreckage they shot before they had to remove it from the beach, and they thought by showing it, it would be a good way for viewers to “catch their breath” before the next program began. Unfortunately, because there were no cast members in the footage, many people took that to be the final “clue” that no one survived the crash. Not hard to see how people were confused. Personally, the fact that there were no dead bodies strewn across the beach (and if you look closely you can see the tarp from Jack’s original medical tent flapping in the breeze) in the footage negates that whole theory.

All the things the body covets, all the hurts and jealousies, envies, desires, etc they as nothing to our spirit. Ben is holding onto his life...John however has already let go of his life and that is why he can look at Ben and say "What did I have that you wanted?" and that is why Ben can say "I forgive you!" Now sometimes we can say this in life but sometimes its not until death strips away everything we held onto in life that we can say "Im sorry" and/or "I forgive."

I think, the reason why John decided to forgive Ben for killing him is the fact that Ben gave his death meaning. As Sawyer put it "Locke was scared, even when he pretended he wasn't". John hated being mediocre, he wanted so badly to be special and the island gave him that. When he wasn't able to convince anyone to go back to the island, he knew that he would have to go back to his old boring life, and it affirmed what he had always believed deep down, the fact that he wasn't special at all. Realising his entire life had no purpose, he decided to kill himself. When Ben killed John, he gave his life purpose, to save the island. This is why John is able to forgive Ben, because Ben made him special, and that is all he ever wanted to be.

Not all of them should go to heaven. I mean Said was a cold blood killer and John killed a lot of people. He threw a knife into a woman back and she was only trying to help them. Some of the should go to hell.

abby Sand They all made mistakes but atoned for them. That's the point, finding a new meaning and being enlightened.
@abbysands95107 жыл бұрын
Alanmarine1 I do not recall them atoning for anything. At least Ben atoned by working with Harley. You can see how much he changed in the sideways flash episode of Lost. For example he could have become Headmaster at the cost of his daughter (at least he did not know that at the time) going to college or he could step down and his daughter would get a glowing recommendation to any college. He chose the latter. A choice he would never have made in the past. After all did he not let his daughter died. Now John, Said, Sawyer, Claire, Charlie never atoned for their past murderous indiscretions. Said went on to murder a lot of people, John died before he could make up for his actions like killing that innocent girl and Sawyer never atoned for killing an innocent man in the alley way not to mention the consequences of cheating innocent people out of their money guaranteed he did hear his father murder his mother. How many innocent kids grew up to become just another Sawyer. What about killing John’s father in cold blood. Claire killed a man in cold blood with an axe because she believed he took her baby and Charlie murder a defenceless man in cold blood guaranteed he did hang by the neck earlier. Are you telling these people should go to to heaven….
@abbysands95107 жыл бұрын
Charity Diary I agree with some of thing you mentioned but I like to interject one thing Ben change began when he starting working with Hurley at the end of season 6. By the time he reach purgatory he was already a changed man. Although it was never shown until 2010 when a small clip was released showing him working with Hurley. A thing he would never would have done in the past. Recall the shadow monster read his mind and realized that he wanted to kill John (although not really John) and become leader again. In that clip he apologised for kidnapping Michael's son. The son forgave him and all three of them head back to the island that is Hurley, Ben and Michael's son. And finally the other's never atoned for their crime they should not be moving on. I think they are moving on to hell. The bad ones.

The most powerful words spoken by anyone is Ben saying "I wanted what you had" and Locke responding "What did I have." How many times have we looked at our life and we are acting on an emotion that is so powerful that it goes right to the core of who we are...its that deep, its that threatening...its that envious or painful..... and then later in our life and it was nothing at all. This has to be the great self reflection that happens after death or towards the end of our life.

One of my favorite scenes in any show ever. I think the way the writers handled the ending of Ben’s character was particularly satisfying. He can do whatever he wants but he chooses to stay behind because he’s finally able to reflect on how he needs to grow, to redeem, or whatever else Linus is looking for in the sideways. On top of that when Locke says goodbye to him the lighting on his face says it all. Locke the man presented in the show as light and dark finally saying goodbye to his greatest friend / enemy and the way he says “goodbye Ben” feels more like the audience saying it then him. God I love LOST even all these years later.

I still hear people talking shit about this ending, but it was such powerful and full of symbolism I couldn't care less. Most of the cast absolutely killed it, especially Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn that carried on their shoulders this show with their absolute god tier acting from start to finish. Truly a masterpiece of a series.

I mean, he still killed good, innocent people, for less than reasonable motives. He murdered John Locke out of pure jealousy, as he admitted in this scene.
@victorpradha99467 ай бұрын
In terms of degrees of badness, Ben is definitely on the scale. Keamy killed anyone just to achieve his objective and was ruthless in doing so. Ben is closer to Keamy in that regard. Sayid killed out of misguided allegiances to some vague ideals. Ben killed Locke out of envy and spite. Sawyer killed out of anger at least 3x--the shrimp truck guy, Locke's bio-dad, and Tom Friendly.

Ash FUCK NO ROFL Sawyer was one of the most hated characters on the show. He is easily the most dividing between fans. He was such a scumbag in the first and second season that most people just never liked him period. He constantly took his problems out on everyone else, manipulated people, betrayed people, how is that a likeable person? Even Ben was more likeable than Sawyer LOL

Lostpedia had a section on the nature of the characters in the Flash Sideways when we first see them and before they "wake up" - that they actually represented the personalities of the real people at their moments of death. That actually makes sense when we realise what the Flash Sideways is. For example: Jack is a Doctor of Faith, believing that he can fix people who might not feel need fixing, including flash sideways John Locke, and reflecting that he redeemed Locke in the real world by finally believing him and believing in himself, and saving the island. Indeed, his offer to fix Locke's paralysis in the flash sideways might even be a subconscious way of the real Jack finally wanting to thank and repay Locke for all the good he had done, and to atone for the often cruel way he treated him in Locke's final days. Hugo had great power and influence, but used it to help others, as we saw in his new role as Island Protector. James had grown from being a bitter and cynical lone wolf to a responsible and valued leader of a strong team, as seen when he joined the DHARMA Initiative, and presumably maintained once he came home and reconciled with his own infant daughter. Kate had a strong mothering instinct, reflected in her growth in acting as a mother figure for young Aaron off the island, and her continued friendship with Claire. Jin and Sun were a loving rebellious couple whose love for each other could change the world, reflecting their renewed love for each other in their final moments. John was still broken, frustrated and vulnerable, reflecting the tragic circumstances of his murder despite his strong belief that things had to get better. Sayid, having effectively died twice in the real world and lived his last days as an infected zombie under the MIB's influence, was a shady and secretive character with questionable ethics in the flash sideways, but still had a lot of good inside him and ultimately does the right thing for others. Ben had reached the end of the beginning of his redemption arc on screen, tempered further by countless years as Hugo' s Number Two, but still haunted by the sins of his time on the Island. Hence, in the flash sideways, he is now in a position of responsibility as a high school teacher, and uses kindness and sympathy towards those in need whom he cares about. And so on...
