Happy New Year 2020!
This video shows how to make a traditional breakfast from south India, that is Aapam. These are light and ideal for breakfast . Aapams are served with a side dish of either Thengai paal (coconut milk sweetened) or a vegetable stew.
Ingredients for Aapam
Raw rice 1 cup
idli rice 1 cup(parboiled rice)
Urad dal 1/4 cup
Poha/rice flakes 1/4 cup
methi(fenugreek seeds) 2 tsp
For thenga paal
Coconut milk 1/2 cup
Jaggery 1/2 cup
cardamom powder 1/4 tsp
For Vegetable Stew
Coconut milk 11/2 cups
Mixed vegs(carrot,onion,cauliflower,green peas, beans,potato)
Green chillies
ginger ,cardamom, cinnamon,cloves,somph(fennel seeds)
Salt to taste

Maam, That was an amazing aapam with coconut milk & stew. It reminds me of my mother. She too made yummy appam. I haven’t made appam in ages but after seeing your video, I want to make it asap. I found the coconut milk you made interesting cos we use sugar but you made a syrup with jaggery & then added the coconut milk. Anyway thank you for your lovely recipe.

Neha Athavale you have to chk with the buyer if it is treated or not. If it’s treated you can use it directly, else u have to do it . Zishta has good products

Mam the recipe looks super yumm..i like all your recipes...but need to ask that while making appam the grinding part if, the coconut is not available then can appam be made without coconut..or is it compulsory to use..taste matters..?? A subscriber from Indore ( Madhya Pradesh)...North India...

Suuuperbbb! Thenga pal we make in Goa and eat by dipping rice pancake or the Goan bread called Poie.... Tea time snack. But I don't know what it's called. Grandmother used to make n we slurp it up..... didn't care about the name.

Gita Akka ji, both aapam n 2 side dish is super, the side dish I made is the 2'nd one(stew), came 👌,the aapam I made in iron, so it became brown quick, other wise the taste was good. Tx a lot for explaining each so nicely .🙏😊

Dear Aunty. I tried today my appam did not come out from my cast iron pan. Even after several appam. All of them were sticking on pan and not coming out struggled for all. And all broke... Whts my mistake.. I have followed your procedure

Excellent 👍. Aadi lendhu pandigai. Nice kolam pottom. We made thengai pal with vellam. We soaked badam , grinded and added in coconut milk. We added kungumapoo. We fried cashew - draksha in ghee and grated.. Thanks for coconut milk recepie

Hi, i likes south indian dishes. After seeing yours many rcp, i decide to subscribe you. I went to toyr south india, i spend my those days, to eat dosa, idly day after day. So loveky thus food, no side effects. I have 2questions, first, how to make dasa batter. Which type of rice. T here is two types of rice. Sadhoya rice, secondly, atap rice(gobindo vog chal). Which type i take. Other question, is Aapam rcp which you take, rice(which type), second, what is this idle rice.? I don't under stand, pl tell me in kolkatta which type of rice take.idle rice which is?. Your rcp guide is so so nice.taje care. my those

kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKjGaINtpJ2mbtk pls watch this.idli rice is short grained and has a white tip. you can use any parboiled rice too. I'm sorry I'm not very familiar with Bengali names but what you have mentioned are both parboiled varieties and should be good

I was completely surprised that you added ENO to the batter and I was told it’s a laxative - Probably when I do attempt to make this I must make sure a bathroom is near by.

It helps to make the batter fluffy with the active ingredients.. it is not a laxative. it is used as a home remedy to treat acidity

Is it necessary to add Ino, also after fermentation ? But in old days when Ino was not there then what was the procedure? As this is a traditional dish so I'm asking.

I have seen many of your recipes.. They are good.But sorry'to say that in Aapam We will not add udad dal and methi seeds....In vegetable stew also We don't add masala... it is purely made with coconut milk only.This can't be called Aapam it'another version of dosa....

Hello Ma'am! I had a few questions, first, is it possible to add the leftover shredded coconut that comes after making coconut milk when you are adding the coconut for grinding aapam batter? also, is it okay to make aapam in any other utensil if one does not have appam maker? Thanks!

Yes you can make in any other suitable vessel and also add coconut water to the batter

Dear ma'am Your recipes are too good, but kindly suggest what to add instead of idli rice in appam. Is Eno or baking powder important to add in appam because I don't like adding soda or eno in my food. Please help, waiting for your reply. Thanks and regards

You need to use parboiled rice or Ukda chaval .. I have not used soda in my recipe

Gita madam wishing you and your family a very happy new year 2020. all your receipes are very nice. this appam.i prepared many times but sometimes it wl be nice but sometimes may not be. could u pls suggest where wl get the appa kodai. becos I don't want non stick one. I hv normal iron kodai so. but not coming properly in that one or can I try in bronze kadai. Pls suggest

To anybody that eat junk food stead their traditional food because it take long to cook it. Remember your grandparents live longer because they toke time to cook good food that is healthier for our body and soul. Don't abandoned your tradition because laziness and convenience.
