Weihrauch and Diana make great springers. I have both, including an HW35E from the 70s and my brother still has "our" 35, bought in 1975! HW99S is another great, real value gun. I'd put my hand between the gun and the rest and always aim to balance at the same point. Over half a century on, a springer is still a great challenge in the garden bottle top challenge, even though I have guns that can shoot out to 1000yds they are still as much value to your shooting, perhaps moreso. Thanks for the review. Nobody would go wrong with this gun.
@tonythomas98853 ай бұрын
Got the exact same gun in 22. Was a bit buzzy so fitted a softer spring to detune it a bit and tight fitting nylon spring guide and top hat. It's now a very sweet springer and very accurate. Regards
@danf71723 ай бұрын
Morning Andy, great review. Forget the trolls, springers can be shot rested but like pellets you need to find the right rest for the gun. Try putting a piece of cloth or duster on the front rest they can be a bit 'grippy'. Keep up the good work.
@memememe26743 ай бұрын
Very weird, I have/had owned a 95,98 and 99 these shot from 4 different filled bags and various rests with no adaption needed. A springer does not need a slippy rest
@danf71723 ай бұрын
I think part of the fun is finding out what the gun likes and whatever suits you as a shooter. I currently have a 97, TX200 and LGU all used in 25m benchrest competition. Also have a HW 30, 90 and 95. I can honestly say they all have a preferred type/density front rest. They all shoot well off a medium density bag but the accuracy can be fine tuned if you experiment with materials and fillings. Precise repetition and placement are also crucial. All my guns shoot better than me!😂

Hi Andy, I have the 99s (same gun) in .22 bought it new and did need a pull through and a good few pellets through to lead the barrel. It is very accurate and like you say a beautiful gun. My rifle is paired with a Hawke vantage 2-7 x 32 AO IR and is perfect. Also the gun likes the artillery hold. Shot many rats its great for pest control but also holds its own on the range and gives many a pcp a run for its money. Every air gunner should have one in their collection.
@barsons22983 ай бұрын
Seconded minus the IR. Straight out of the box and hitting bulls at 25 yards. Not bad a distance either.
@warrenbrooks-r2h3 ай бұрын
@@barsons2298 Hi agreed great out of the box, not sure if a so called tuning kit would improve an already great gun. I do intend to re grease and slightly polish the internals if it starts to show any signs of twang or roughness as have read the factory lube isn't great. I went for the IR for the etched glass recital and the fact I shoot a lot at dusk with quite a dark back drop. The smaller scope really suits these rifles. If was to upgrade it would probably be an Airmax but really happy with the Vantage. Too many over scope these rifles with larger scopes that ruin the look of this beautiful rifle.
@barsons22982 ай бұрын
Yeah Ive not felt the need to improve its performance even after three years. Provided the zero is good, I need to tweak it slightly based on my range/distance, generally the only issue it has is the shooter!

I have EXACTLY the same Rifle and scope. Bought new 1 year ago. It's fitted with a 1 piece 4 bolt (medium) Hawke mount. I have also done some mods regarding the open sights as they will never be used. Even if you can't see them (normally) they DO block some light entering the front lens element.

Every now and then I take only my 95 and 97’s (new and old) to the range to remind me what it is all about, how to breathe how to hold etc. Springers are amazing, I am a rubbish shot until I settle in after the first 10/15 pellets. I never hunt with them as I have been spoilt with by my 100kt and others. More vids like this please mate, it how us of a certain age started and maybe how youngsters should also start or at least try??

I really like the fact you're honest about taking the "idle" route. That's a nice way of saying pcp shooting takes less skill than a springer. I've owned a 97k blue laminate since November last year, the accuracy is incredible as long as you do your part consistently. I got it tuned by one of if not thee best professional springer tuners in the UK (Nick Simmons) a few months ago. I had to learn to shoot it again as the rifles characteristics completely changed and it's so much better for it. I was getting very tight groups at 50 yards before the tune, now I can get pellet on pellet single hole groups at 60 yards.

Not bad at all Andy. I drape an old cue cloth over the rest when using a springer as it allows the rifle to slide freely in its natural path. I do like the scope having been tempted to buy one from your recent review. Mine sits on a 100 bullpup though I may invest for the 97k too given the quality and price point. Looking forward to next week 👍

Morning Andy, good review as usual I was lucky enough to have been able to buy one of the two of these my local dealer managed to obtain, the other was a .22 cal ( they were available in both calibres). As you say it is a beautiful rifle that I think in time will become a collectors classic. There is also a HW97 125 year anniversary special in a similar finish. I have 4 Weihrauch rifles, a 97, a 95 and 100 bullpup in addition to the 50 (the 97 and 95 being Welsh Willy tuned) they are all superb, for those unable to obtain an anniversary special, you can buy the standard HW50 for £330 or the very similar HW99 from just over £300, both lightweight full power rifles.

Hi Andy, I’ve got one in .22. I have to say well done on your lighting, I’ve watched several reviews where the filming doesn’t do that beautiful stock justice, it really is stunning in the flesh, this is the only time I have bought a rifle based purely on its looks and wouldn’t have cared if it was 2ft/lbs with the grouping of a blunderbuss. I’ve had it months and am seriously thinking of never firing it and keeping it perfect and boxed as a family heirloom!! Great review, keep up the good work 👍

It’s like everything in life practice makes perfect, I mainly shoot pcp’s but it’s nice to go back to your roots and get a springer out from time to time and I sometimes take a springer out for a bit of vermin control after I’ve made a hole in the rat population on certain permissions, but I’ll always have a warm up to remember how they shoot and to get my eye in so I’m all set for the main event. Looks a lovely rifle and as I’m a bit of a Weihrauch nut this is one I’ve never shot. Great review Andy see you next week.

If its a brand new rifle you'll need to fire a tin pellets to burn off excess oil, bed in the action, and lead the barrel. Groupings will tighten up. Weihrauchs like the tighter pellets. 4,52 or 4.53.

On the subject of pellet choice for my 99s (same rifle) in .22 I have found the best to be H&N Field Target Trophy. They are a really good fit in the barrel and the weight is spot on at 14.66gr giving 11.7 ft lb. I also have good results with Air Arms Diabolo Field that I use if its windy conditions at 16gr these are slightly looser in the barrel. Short range sub 20 yards ratting I use JSB Hades with good results, don't think the pellet mushrooms / fragments at sub 12ft lb but defiantly slows down and dumps more energy. One word of caution they are very loose in the barrel and have to close the barrel facing down as to not clip the pellet skirt.They are accurate. A surprise budget pellet that I tried at the range that a friend was using was the new style Spitfire Dome, my rifle seemed to like them. They did look very clean and well produced.

That second group is a good group. All of the variance is side to side on a single vertical plane, purely wind! I reckon on a still day you'd put that all in a ragged hole. That particular gun doesn't seem to mind being shot rested rather than artillery hold. Nice gun!

Commenting before the end, I bought a HW85k to shoot open sights suppressed. Weihrauch make, or at least did make slip on suppressors (15 or 16mm barrels) that you fasten the front sight through. It is accurate. But I much prefer my old BSA supersport, which had anti-boing technology way back in the 90's. The weihrauch I bought makes the loudest boing noise I have ever heard, and that has really spoiled it for me. Also the monkey that put it together over tightened the screws that keep the barrel closed.

It is a colour scheme that doesn't appeal to me personally but we are all different...the rifle itself is everything you would want in a break barrel (for me personally) .....they do make lovely rifles and i love springers....if they had just made it in blue (which perhaps says more about football shirts than rifles) 👍

Thanks Andy, another great review. It's a lovely gun, but not for me as I need a silencer for both pest control and for back garden plinking, also that beautiful stock wouldn't be improved by either barbed wire or brambles. I've had various springers since the early 60s, and before people even thought about such things as spring dampening and barrel harmonics we always held the fore end quite loosely in the hand rather than on a rest because it gave a better result. Might be worth a try?
