I think soul did the parallelism between MOM and 666 because he is stating that not only god is a woman, but also the devil is. So, if this is the case, ab is saying that women can be both a source of enlightment, beauty and graciousness, but also a form of filthyness and sin. your place in all of this depends on which of the two type of women you WANT to follow, which relates back to the "Do what thou wilt" theme... listening to soulo is so mind exercising. Shit has 60 different meanings and sometimes you're not even able to explain one of them... anyways this is a great fuckin album

only 19 minutes into the review at this point and myke brought up the mom 666 bar, i took it as him saying the "system" is subconciously telling us from a young age, even in our technology, that women equal evil, or have some sort of negative connoctation (sp?) to them. loving it so far, and im glad to see that the crew seems to be enjoying it! I bought myself and my best friend a hard copy from tde's website and am jusy waiting for a vinyl release now! keep up the great content!

He also takes it a step further in an attempt to convey how deeply this pervasive attitude of subtle (and sometimes blatant) sexism is pushed upon us by challenging the Holy Trinity and saying it promotes sexism by alluding to the fact that parts of Christianity are based on parts Ancient Egyptian theology of which one is the existence of 3 deities known by their (hellenised) names of Osirus, Isis, and Horus; the father, the mother, and the son. They are the basis for the modern day Holy Trinity except today its The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost. The mother is missing. wtf. Maybe Isis wasn't omitted at beginning, who knows? But we do know that somewhere along the way Christians ditched her. The question now is was it due to just plain jane sexism or something more sinister, and why does it seem like somewhere someone is putting in considerable effort to create so many sexist "coincidences" like the mom bar and his 1st verse on Now You Know.

The word maricon is Spanish for “faggot”. It also sounds quite like “American”. By saying that an atom is a molecule, he is pointing out that a molecule is a compound of atoms but an atom is a compound of protons, neutrons and electrons. So in a sense, an atom is a molecule of subatomic particles too. That’s why the atom said, “‘Cause he is me and I am him…” Just for some clarification, great review!!! I'm just as,if not more, happy than you guys that Ab-Soul returned with some major heat!

On the relevance of Thelema to DWTW as an album. Crowley's whole thing was that if you follow your own will, or what the universe has willed for you, you will find success, right? So, look at his discography. There's Control System, wherein he's openly himself - an anarchist and occultist, or at the very least someone with anarchist/occultist tendencies and thoughts. Critical darling, gets Ab a feature on every album, he's the new hotness for a moment there in underground rap. Then we have These Days, where he is trying to produce a mainstream album and it sounds like Ab fucking going to work at a desk job, having to supress himself. Everyone finds it boring, thinks that Ab's fallen off. So he's Doing As He Will, or his will, meaning the universe's will for him. He's following the law, he is following the path laid out for him, in the Thelemic trust that if he does what he is best and was meant to do, he will find success. He will no longer attempt to fit into other's perceptions of who he should be and will be himself in all his glory. Which is why the album was as great as it was, and some pretty core Thelemic ideas. Anyway, an interpretation of the significance of the title on DWTW.

Yo, first off, we need more people that are like every single member of DEHH in this world, what Ken said about being immersed in the album from beginning to end helped me get more and truly appreciate what dwtw has to offer, thank you guys, please stay amazing! Second, I liked These Days and initially while I enjoyed this album, it wasn't until this review that I realized the genius that ab-soul has to offer, this album absolutely blows These Days out of the water! Flow and delivery wise ab-soul is unique but what makes him especially unique is analyzing his lyrics. I prefer not to overthink what rappers have to say, but like you guys said, with ab-soul, you don't truly get and enjoy the experience unless you really listen to what he says. Thinking about it, it's a shame that other members of Black Hippy don't get more promo, not to take anything away from Kendrick, but this album makes Kendrick look boring! I had fun listening to souls lyrics and trying to figure out what he says, and from my understanding it is truly beautiful what ab-soul has to offer in his music, kind of reminds me of to pimp a butterfly, minus the presentation of the way ab-souls album is presented, Lonely Soul, Now you know, and Invocation were definitely one of the best tracks on the project.

I think the american flag line is basicly about how the founding fathers had no intentions of actually extending the rights they were creating with the constitution to women. I think absoul is just calling them fags, i dont think he means it in a literal way, but hes just saying it because their actions seemed to be totally void of any consideration or concern for women when they were founding the nation.

Huey Knew THEN=Huey Newton. Huey Percy Newton was an African-American political activist and revolutionary who co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966. He also had a Ph.D. in social philosophy. This song may be Ab's way of explaining why people are separated. So he uses the whole thing about women throughout this album to represent the separation that humanity as a whole create from hatred masked in what people think is love. This is why Crowley believed that love and hate are synonymous, which is what Ab-Soul agrees with and is also a portrayal in itself of how love can be masked with hate as well. This is shown by how a man of "evil" (Crowley being a satanist) can also shine light on a truth that can lead to "good". This leads to the title of the album, "Do what thou wilt", meaning no matter what, why, or how you live, you are alive. Therefore, being alive is embodied by a gift of a choice- "What, why, and how will one live?" or is the choice-"Does one live at all?" This ideology is circular, which feeds into the ideology that there is no measurement of objective right and wrong, only measurement of whether alive or dead. This leaves (I'll speak for myself) me stuck as Ab-Soul seems to be, which is portrayed on the cover by his frustrated body language, distraught facial expression, and grey backdrop, as in society, "the grey area" represents the uncertain state of being. Circular ideology means that there is no beginning nor end, which Ab portrays when he says his hypothesis is that the chicken came before the egg. Therefore he is befuddled and uneasy, which is ALSO portrayed (yes so much goddamn "portrayal" in this album, haha) by the musical side, which is most directly portrayed by the haste in his vocal inflection and flow and the darkness to the instrumentals. Ahh, ahora ya término. I am finally finished now. Even if all of this thought process is baloney, on behalf of the youth of the hip hop community, we appreciate you, Ab, for giving a canvas for music listeners to brainstorm on. And shout out to DEHH for reacting to Ab's provoking. My fandom is life-long. Salute

"Atrocity Exhibition", "Honor Killed the Samurai", and this masterpiece from Ab-Soul are powerful contenders for album of the year.

I'm just happy for Ab-Soul. I don't believe he'll ever have that "mainstream" appeal but he has a large fan following and I hope this album adds to his movement.

I feel like this album is just an introduction to souls views on the subjects integrated in the album... I really think there is much more to come to further expand on a lot of things soul was saying or implying in this album...

I don't think Ab believes is God or the Devil to be honest, it doesn't matter to be honest. I mean look at the comments, he got people talking about him. That was the purpose. Not converting people's religion, just to get people to talk. And he did a good job. The whole album is full of contradictions. People pick up on what they want to. He's playing everyone.

J Cole has the Roc Nation/Interscope machine backing him (plus a track log of well received projects). Ab-Soul, for all of the acclaim of his camp, is signed solely to Top Dawg Entertainment (having yet to have a project available in stores). the scale is different, regardless of the actual product.
@davidawonaike11888 жыл бұрын
scipio2009 that's not J. Coles fault. Cole is more relatable and will always sell better

Thelema isn't a big part of the album? I find various references weaved through the lyrics, much in a fashion like A.C. would do in work. "All my thoughts are lavender and pastel green, if you were Nuit you would know what I mean."

@slcow123458 жыл бұрын
Shockheadd45 They're plenty of rappers who won't "change the game". That doesn't mean they are bad. Even Obama bumps her music, she has a fan base. She's super dope man, just because you aren't a fan doesn't mean her fan base is "nonexistent".
@slcow123458 жыл бұрын
Shockheadd45 I was using the president because he doesn't have tons of time on his hands to listen too rappers. I could've said Kendrick Lamar as an example, still would've proven my point lol. Just read comments on her music videos, she has a fan base. Better argument for you? lol "politics"
@holiday420208 жыл бұрын
Shockheadd45 You're ignorant, she's signed to the ROC for a reason. She may not be as big and Cole or Kendrick, she doesn't have to be. She's an exceptional MC. There aren't very many rappers out there "changing the game" anyways

I think the marricon line could be in relation to how he only loved God who is depicted as a man in relation to the line about men praying to a "man" they barely understand, but when he ate the apple he was given the vision to see a woman in a sexual way.
@bloodcousin8 жыл бұрын
Fuckin Thank You Myke! For being the only one to dive into the album and break it down a bit from questioning the pointless verse 2 for WifeyvsWifey to admitting your disappointment with the lack of explanation for the F(l)ag and Adam lines to actually mentioning the Title/Thelema background and not being afraid to admit there isn't a stronger correlation between The Album itself and Crowley's The Book of The Law. The rest of the fellas seem to reiterate one another's reaction/favorite tracks, they probably don't want to offend Soul, Top, Punch, and them. Love Soul and I enjoy the album but, I Know that he knows he could have gone harder on some of these tracks. #TDE
