Congratulations on getting it running again! As a near life-long AMC guy I always enjoy seeing one of Kenosha's finest being brought back to life. To answer your first question, your dipstick SHOULD be on the driver's side near the rear of the motor. The fact that it isn't leads me to believe the tube was either broken off or pulled out of the block. I have had good success getting AMC mechanical parts from NAPA and O'Reillys as well as eBay and Amazon over the years and there are a few online AMC parts guys for the harder to get stuff. I would recommend checking the camshaft timing gear before running it too hard as AMC used a nylon toothed gear that tends to suddenly shear off under load due to age and/or mileage thus very emphatically demonstrating that this is an interference engine by bending every single push rod and bending a valve or two as it stops running. I learned this the hard way and always pop the distributor and check the gear to see if it's been upgraded. Easiest way to check is with a magnet on a stick as it won't stick to the aluminum and nylon toothed gear but will to the steel replacement. Chances are good yours probably has, given those Edelbrock valve covers but it always pays to know for sure. The Gulf Coast is unkind to stationary sheet metal (especially under trees) and has definitely had a grand time chewing on your Javelin. Your transmission should be in park with the side lever all the way forward if this still has it's original Borg Warner transmission. Looking forward to future posts!

Thankyou sir I knew I could count on the AMC guys. I will defiantly check out the timing gear as this engine sounds so healthy i would hate for it to grenade its self. The dipstick must be broken off, I didn't show it in the video, but I looked all over that engine for it lol. You are 100% correct the salt in the air eats these cars if they sit for long periods. Its a shame my car sat for as long as it did. I havent decided if im going to keep the car or sell it to a AMC guy that needs some parts or has so parts to give it new life. Time will tell, and thanks for the sub!

Its a bit of a rust bucket but in my mind thats the best looking of the pony cars. Its got a really elegant shape that doesn't need a lot of scoops, spoilers or tape jobs to make it look good. I'm looking forward to see where you go with this project.

I agree with ya, it’s a great looking car with some awesome body lines. We definitely will see. The only downside fall is AMC replacement parts are rare and cost so much. I will do a little more research.

Yeah I wish I had the extra cash and time to put in it, but amc parts are sky high. A clean front and rear bumper is like 1500 bucks. So as much as I hate it I’m probably going to have to sell it to one of the AMC guys out here. I do have a video coming out tomorrow where I try and get it driving. Thanks for watching.

You might want to check the numbers on the engine. I don't think that engine was offered in the javelin that year. But its a nice find , that's getting really hard to come across nowadays. If I remember correctly it should have a 360 or a 390 .
@LyonRacing246 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment I’m uploading the video from this weekend right now and I did check the numbers. The video will be out tomorrow!

Chance, new to your channel. I had a 69 Javelin 390 4 speed back in the day. I wish I still did. Wicked fast for a small block. Big Bad Blue.Sad thing AMC bought parts from everyone ( GM, Ford &Chrysler).Transmission should be a AMC specific 727 Torqueflight'.keep up the good work.look forward to the next one.

...I've got a 1968 red Javelin I inherited 2 weeks ago. Not the original motor but has a 360 under the hood. Body is in 75% better shape than this one. Very little rust. Same color and original paint with some patina. The interior is almost perfect. No rips. Black interior. Good headliner. Needs brakes. Garaged for the past 8 years. The rear quarter panel has some rust on the passenger side. Other than that. Great shape for its age. The motor ran 8 years ago but has been sitting in a garage for 8 years. I'm not a collector nor am I interested in repairing anything. I have the original ignition keys. Interested? Let me know...

The starter was what had the engine in a bind. The Bendix was extended and holding the fly wheel.😊

I’m a diehard, AMC guy myself, I currently own a 74 gremlin with a 360 AMC built up. If that’s a factory 290 car most likely it started life with a two barrel. That looks like a factory four barrel intake so it may not be the original engine. Check in between the motor mounts on the block and see what it says, it could either be a 290, 304, 343, 360, 390 or 401.
@LyonRacing246 ай бұрын

WOW that thing is a PILE! I love when he sees 75K on the odometer but assumes its 175K after seeing a worn gas peddle? I can tell you back in the 60's and 70's almost nobody put 175K miles on a car. 99% of people drove a car until it hit high miles (about 100K) and then would get another car. You know back when America had good cars everywhere for cheap. It wasn't until the 90's that computers/ fuel injection became standard that people kept driving cars well past the 100K mark. I would say its probably a 75K original mile car.
@LyonRacing246 ай бұрын
The brake pedal had a decent amount worn off of it, it’s just easier to over assume than under assume ya know lol I don’t want to assume it’s only 75 k and be wrong on video if that that makes sense. Yeah for sure bud thanks for the comment!
