This may come off as a dumb question but, when I used to do this, I'd drop a quart or two of marvel mystery oil or seafoam down the crankcase, then hook a drill up to the oil pump and prime that engine about a dozen times or so in the hopes it'll work its way down all the bearings ... have you ever tried this? If you can get lubrication down the rods, mains and cam bearings, the only real thing you'll fight are sticky rings. An oil pressure gauge on the far end of the system is usually a good way to know if you're making any headway while priming. Just a thought. I haven't done these in a while.

The vinegar is a mild acid, works like Muriatic Acid when de-rusting a gas tank. But not good overall for metal; Kroil is a better bet because it lubricates too. Your idea of pushing the piston down wasn't a bad one, but concentrated too much force in the weakest part of the piston -- aluminum is a lot more brittle than iron. It might have worked to put 3-4 of your nuts around the perimeter where the piston is stronger and tighten them in sequence -- that's 3-4 times the total force with less stress on the aluminum piston, and closer to the stuck ring. There the failure would be to blow out the land, which would still free the piston from the block. I'm assuming FE pistons aren't hard to come by. When dealing with rust, there's no substitute for soaking.
@todddenio32003 жыл бұрын
I have used vinegar many times and it hasn’t given any indication of affecting the good metal but did take care of the rust usually within 24 hours and while I have also used kroil and love it, I have had things it just would not free up and I followed it up with a vinegar soaking which worked every time. Am I saying that Kroil is not a great product? Absolutely not because it is great but even it has limitations in which case something a bit more aggressive on rust is called for and so far all engines I have used it in freed up and as soon as they were free I oiled the cylinders to prevent flash rusting the cylinders and as long as the engine didn’t have other issues such as bad bearings, bad timing chains, etc and the engine was able to run it held up fine and nearly all of them are still running today although about half were eventually given a re-ring and new bearings after it was found they were parked because they were getting worn out and the other half still run untouched after several years. Of the nearly 20 engines I have used vinegar to free up only 3 failed to last and one of those was due to a cracked crankshaft, another dropped a valve taking out a piston and cylinder wall and the 3rd blew when a friend’s 16 yr old daughter decided that while her parents were at work she should do massive burnouts with that big 71 Buick Electra on the highway a little ways from home so she wouldn’t get caught and it tossed a rod. Her dad was so impressed with the burnouts she did that he couldn’t bring himself to punish her beyond telling her that she broke it, so she had to get her hands dirty and help do the work to fix it when he would get a replacement engine for it since the rest of the car was nearly immaculate.

On a V8 I remove the carb and rocker arms. tap on the valves to be certain they are all closed. then fill the intake manifold full of diesel and atf mix. then open the intake valves and that will allow every cyl to get 100% full. The 12 point design permits this style fastener to be tightened down with a 12-point socket wrench, permitting higher torques to be applied compared to a standard hex drive socket head fasteners.

Those rag joints are a pain. Mine took multiple tools, an angle grinder, and a vice, before re-installing it.

Good morning Mortske, hope your weekend was sweet. Your show is a more than welcome start to my week so, hey to Duff and thanks for sharing. Oh, I hope you're able to find a more worthy ford truck .. Good times

Awesome vid. Wanted to be the one to put in the "Ford/Edsel" info, but there are plenty more learned and quicker on the draw folk our there than me it seems. Well, you're a patient man, and it seems that the words of my old shop teacher are proving true... "Usually when you find a V8 Ford in a field, there's a reason for it".

Be careful bad mouthing a FORD Truck . From what I’ve seen over the years they outlast Chevy trucks 2:1 Love the channel as a new subscriber. And love Chevy trucks too there’s just not many around that aren’t rusted to the ground.

a chev will run forever, not a ford. unless its got a inline. then it might.

Yeah, Mortske did a revival on an SBC with no valve covers or air cleaner that had been sitting in a junk yard for years. It ran and drove. Sorry buddy your love of Fords will always be unrequited.

Turns out better than the last deal you did but Jimmy spenders bud usually there's a reason why Fords get parked in three low tree row and that reason is because they don't have a Chevrolet drivetrain under them LOL

I had an 81 F150 that was painted bright safety yellow. It was a Bechtel project supers rig I got on a bid. It worked for me fine from Hanford WA to Cali and back. Your old beater kinda reminds me of it. You need to train Duff in some personal hygiene.

I saw Derek Bieri (VGG) get a 75' Torino with a 400 that was locked up tight broke loose using the soak and breaker bar on the balancer bolt method. However, I saw Dylan McCool soak and old big block Dodge with diesel. Filled it from the pan the top of the valve covers, and down the carb, but still couldn't get it free. Guess ya never know until ya know. Good idea on the tool though! Wonder if rocking the hell out of it with the skid steer while in gear and 4 low would've done anything...

I think the tires would just skid. We've tried before.

More than valiant effort! I'd try putting a hardwood block to disperse the blow on the top of the piston. Use a 4X4 post about 12" long and smash on it with a 20 lbs sledge hammer. Add some heat with the rose bud torch.... more break free oil... more sledge hammering... Hit it harder and harder until it comes loose, or crumbles into pieces... then you only need to replace one or two pistons... Hone the cylinders...and boom. Lap in the valves... and it would probably run.
@kirk467 Жыл бұрын
I think you should have tried to heat the outside of the block with a torch just lightly heating it, not big time and have you tried putting it in gear and rocking the truck with the forklift a little bit! No to the vinegar but maybe start soaking them as soon as you find them because it might be a little while before you get to it! I’m just trying to help my friend, never hurt though! Thanks for sharing Mortske and Duff, Kirk from Louisiana! 👌🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

OK Mortske, I have an elixer for you and I've seen it work. A friend of mine had an old Ford flathead that ran a double drum yarder he wanted to use. It sat out in the field and rain for several years with one head off. Of course the motor was stuck. He said I'll have her going in two days. I asked how,the piston were crowned with white aluminum powder and stuck He said watch. He filled the cylinders with Coke. Slid the head over the mess to keep the rain out. You know it never rains here in Washington state especially the west side.. I went back in two days and he was sitting there reving the motor up. Smiled at me and said, "I told you it would work"!
