Mortske Repair

Күн бұрын

I picked up this van from a local scrapper this past summer. Not knowing what to do with it at that time I have since decided we should see if it will run and if it does we should try putting my 671 blower setup on top of the stock bottom end! Seems like a terrible idea right? Well, lets see if we can get it to run first! Neither the engine nor the van is for sale at this time. As always, thanks for watching!

Mad props to these car guys. Been watching a bunch of them for years (including Mortske) so I finally worn the wife down and was allowed to get an old 59 F100 w/ a 223. Been working on it for a few weeks and my baby-soft hands are scratched up and permanently dirty, my garage is a disaster, and every piece of clothing I own smells like PB Blaster and salty tears. I'm sleeping on the couch and eating dinner with the O'Reilly's guys in town. My whole body hurts and i'm broke. I dont know how they do this for years on end. I need a vacation already and it's been like 13 days.

@@MortskeRepair I always used a saw at the u pick it lot. Back in the 80's when going to the yard was a real treat, they would bring the "yard car" with the torch in the back seat and just cut it out for you. They also heated the office with a wood stove powered by waste oil and had the best ashtrays of used diesel pistons. Made the ashtrays we made in school look lame 😂.

The bottom end of that 350 sounds really good, but that BDS 6-71 on a stock bottom end reminds me of the Draguar that Dave Freiburger and Mike Finnegan built in the parking lot of Gotelli Speed Shop in California. It ended up running like crap and overheated to the point of warpage. I would definitely treat it with some aftermarket aluminum heads, a valvetrain upgrade, and a blower cam before bolting that big beautiful bastard onto it. You know more than I do about engines though. You've worked on damn near everything...😂😂😂

My uncle Ed had an '87Chevy van in the mid 90s. It was a green half ton window, very dented up and missing the rear seat. He put the stereo from my grandmother 's '87 Oldsmobile Calais after that car's engine blew up. He also gave the van front seats from a '70s Ford but couldn't recall what model. The van had the EFI 231 V6 and ( I guess) TH350. He also put load leaves above the rear spring packs.

46:29 first time I saw a G-van getting an engine pulled was high school auto shop, it was a raggedy '76 G20 with the 400 coming out to go in the teacher's Hugger Orange '69 C10 short wide. And yes, he had students taking air nibblers to cut the front of the van completely off. No reciprocating saws or grinders allowed. That was for second year students, us first year kids were rebuilding a nice little fleet of Quadrajets. Probably to also go in teacher's C10, if not soon, eventually.

the mid-brake-hose metal holder brackets rust around them and pinch them shut, while the hoses should be replaced, you can spread the holders open and regain brake function. they're open sided and just crimped around the hose when new and turn into very tight pinch off clamps when rusted between the hose and bracket.

You can use the exhaust manifolds, because all you have to do is put plugs in the smog holes after you put some heat on them to get them our. That's how we use to eliminate all that BS when we de smogged anything that didn't get headers. Those should flow better than even the rams horn manifolds did because of the larger outlets on them along with the longer tubes off the end exhaust ports without the sharp bends restrictions of regular cast iron manifolds. Since you're going to use the big ass blower on it you need all the flow out you can possibly get in order to tune it halfass correctly. Unless you install a huge top pulley, and choke it down to minimum capability, and I don't think that one will really go too low on CFM's anyways. I could be wrong, but I would check with the blower shop to see just how much they are capable of moving with the smallest pulley available, but then you still have the two 650 cfm holleys sitting on top that will have to be jetted down as small as you can and them not bog down. Unless you can make them into a two stage setup to where you only use one until WFO throttle is applied, but you'll probably kill the blower surge that's so f'in kool about blowers

Thanks Mortske for the will it speed run! That's a yes to budget blower shenanigans!! After the fire at the Hydra Matic factory, GM made sure they had plenty of fire trucks at the factory, I know someone with one of them and the funny thing is that it's powered by a Chrysler industrial engine!

🗿💨 be careful stepping off that bobcat, don't let that Camara make you break your neck.. strip it to the shortblock and reassemble with bb oil pump and fresh chain n such. Thanks for sharing Mortske 👍✌️ unhealthy valve system will cause backfires, backfires will cause blower damage.. 🙏🧲

The way the engine was popping through carb on accel,I would be looking for flat lobes or disappearing ones on cam, they were bad in those years, valve train was noisey also, good indicator.

it's an old quadrabog/dog, it's guaranteed the accelerator pump hasn't worked at all in 25+ years and poorly for 30+. yeah, clearly I've worked on and rebuilt just a few of them(dozens upon dozens and many others, small engine to multi-carb racing cruft.). 🤣🤣

The Hydromatic originally came out in Olds in 1936 FYI. You need to take that 350 with the Blower and the turbo 400 and build a Rat Rod . With all good parts you have it could a wild one but I'm sure you don't like them😅

You could do it, but I don't see you taking the time to put it in the van and then hammering it in the engine bay! It would be the best build in a good while. I can't remember when I seen a OBS style Chevrolet van with a blower motor in it and you would have something that most people would not even think 🤔 about trying to do and drive it. Would be a show stopper.
