Central Valley resident here: I was saddened to hear the part about calling our area ‘depressing’ and ‘uninspiring’. It’s a beautiful region, and is just as special to California as the coast and the mountain ranges.

Love it, I grew up in the Sweetland diggins, population 35. The town had a population of 300 during the gold rush ,but had only 35 people and dirt roads when I was there. The water cannons created islands of land that could not be reached by birds. The ponds left were excellent fishing. You have brought back some great memories, thank you.

Been in California all my life. Mostly around Los Angeles but also up north and central. In my 43 years on this earth, what I've learned, is people in the city are miserable by comparison to people in rural areas. It's like night and day going from Riverside County to Humboldt County, really jolts your brain at first when random strangers on the street smile and say hello to you after spending too much time in the city.

I was born and raised in Merced County Central Valley California. There is not as much stuff to see as in the Bay Area or many other places in the state of California, but the people in the Central Valley are significantly better people than those in the Bay Area or in the LA area. People in the Central Valley are much more down-to-earth, and would be more willing to help you out if you were in need then most in the Bay Area or LA area.

What people don't realize is that North Carolina had the first gold rush and had the most gold found. CA had the most media present there so it was thought that CA had the most gold! Randolph County, NC, down to Stanley County, still has more gold underground to be taken than the total that has been mined in America (according to the USGS). The largest gold nugget in America was found in North Carolina also.

The erosion made it feel like a Dali painting as we progressed because when we started, the chest high wooden trail markers were sticking out well above the ground, and by the end, the eroded sand/gravel was almost covering the trail markers up lol.
