Abandoned & Severely Neglected Volvo 245 - CAN WE SAVE IT?

Do we need anymore? No of course we don't, but I couldn't see this car go to scrap or get banger raced. This car has been left for dead for nearly 20 years. Can we save it? Join us for a walk around of this poor old slice of neglected Volvo 245 DL.

Love a Volvo. Grandparents had 2x 244's at various times then a 340 in 1998. In 1999 I passed my test and drove the 340 for 3 years. Bought my first car in 2003 a 1986 740 estate 2.3 B230K. Had it for 5 years in France and having running issues and bought a Toyota Corolla new in 2007 Then bought a 1989 240GLT Auto estate in 2009 for £350 as moving to County Kerry. Moved back to the UK 30 months later and kept the 240. Had him for 10 years. Sold as had too many cars and not using him. Sold for £500 with 2 months MOT. Heater fan dead, bit of rust, but ran great. 234,000miles. 2 years prior in 2016 bought a 940 Turbo LPT auto estate for £250. Still have this as my workhorse. A good car as like the split folding seats, ABS and AC. A lot quieter than a 240. Just rolled over 210,000 miles and runs well. Always love the 240 shape and 744 saloon. Think the 244 saloon and 744 look really classy.

Had 1 identical,CNO184T.i fitted leather seats and painted both sides.129 was paint code I think.regretted selling it the minute the new owner sat in drivers seat.never seen it since.

On early cars heated seats were thermostatically controlled, they only come on when its very cold

Vege folder in the glovebox is from a big Dutch engine rebuilder. Probably you have a rebuilt Vege engine.

Well, a huge amount of work needed. Probably not a bad project for someone who has: No other projects to get on with. No full-time job taking up their time. Plenty of money. Lots of workshop space available. A great deal of optimism. An unquenchable passion for old Volvos. Good luck and best wishes.

I think that's a 1980 model on V plate. You can tell by the wheels and the fig light on the tailgate.

My bad , thought the boot mounted fog light came in for 1980 model year, but looks like it became mandatory for cars built from Oct 1979. Mine is identical but 1980.

940 Turbo engine obviously. Need at least to upgrade to a more reliable injection system like LH2.4. Probably needs a rewire anyway so may aswell make it worth the effort. Just a standard 940 Turbo, the M4x gearbox and clutch can't take much more than a 12psi boosted 2.3. If you want more you need M90 gearbox and I'm not sure that will fit without major surgery.

That car puts me in mind of both the Matchbox 'Superkings' rendition of the 245 and the virtually identical 245 DL that my late uncle owned back in the 1980s, both of which got me interested in Volvos in the first place.

This is exactly why I wanted one buddy. I saw this come up for scrap on a Facebook page and couldn’t let it happen. I have the exact 245 matchbox superking in my display cabinet 😉

Lovely find Marc and great to have another 244 saved. If it was mine I’d get it mechanically sound (with maybe a nice tune and exhaust), just fix whatever rot is needed to keep it sound and just keep the rest of the patina as is. Maybe band the steelies running original hubcaps. Love it

The combination of square headlights and wipers on a uk car is very rare, you can buy that scuttle panel new if its too far gone

Yes that’s what drew me to the car it’s a rare thing these days. I have found one place for a scuttle so I will see what I can do. But I want the screen out and try and save it if I can.

That cable going into the tailgate that you said was for the heated screen, I'm more inclined to say that it is for the fog light on the tailgate that has to go.

Older 240 had a thermostat in the heating element instead of a on and off button for the seats :)
