The drummer was Per Lindvall. The song is in 3/4 time and Per came up with his syncopated drum pattern to make the song seem less 'waltzy' given the time signature. He began drumming for Abba with his debut on the Super Trouper song.

There’s a story that Benny remarked of bad sound quality on one of the tracks when he first listened to the CD. It was actually tape hiss! From one of the analogue tracks! The song is not about Fear, its about Respect for those who have lent their lives for our freedom. Like the counter chorus says:"Soldiers write the songs that ..you and i dont sing...you'd think that nothing in the world was wrong".." in the grip of this cold december..YOU AND I have reasons to Remember". Poetic and patriotic.

The thing that faschinates most of all with ABBA is the fact that with each album they released they just got better and better, developing their craft into new and exciting directions. Very much like the Beatles did in the 60's. Not many artists have this ability or gift.

This song is one of those recordings in which the 2 vocal leaders sung in separate formats, I liked it when Frida elevated the core with her strong voice " "Soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing The songs that you and I don't sing They blow their horns and march along They drum their drums and look so strong You'd think that nothing in the world was wrong"" It seems like her vocal doubled in that portion of the song.

The recording quality of this post is fine; what you're experiencing is a late-era ABBA phenomenon in which they obscured or slightly under-enunciated the vocals in the choruses. Love this song, but here are 10 great Abba songs that are underrated: 1. If It Wasn't For The Nights - from the 1979 Album Voulez-Vous. Has a breezy summer feel to it, a sequel to Dancing Queen musically 2. That's Me - from Arrival, 1976. Benny Anderson was/is a wizard with keyboards and melodies. The woman in this song is saying, this is who I am, and I'm not a man's toy, deal with it. 3. Move On - from The Album, 1977. The instrumentals here are like a cascading waterfall in the intro, with Bjorn's spoken words giving way to one of the most beautiful choruses they've ever done. Great harmonies where you can hear Frida's deeper vocals in the chorus while Agnetha's crystal clear solo verses steal your heart. Enjoy life, like the sun that follows every rain. 4. So Long - from Abba, 1975. This is Abba's early glam rock sound, a sequel to Waterloo in style, one of their most energetic and powerful offerings 5. The Piper - from Super Trouper, 1980. This is based on the legendary Pied Piper of Hamelin who, in the middle ages, played music to lure villagers and then kidnapped their children while they were distracted. The lyric "played their minds away" warns of fascist dictators who "seduce" the population and then take advantage. The latin "Sub Luna Saltamus" lyric means dance under the moon. 6. Hole In Your Soul - from The Album, 1977. Abba doing rock opera here.....the message is chill out, when you try too hard, you mess up. Agnetha's high notes here are out of this world. 7. Cassandra - non album b-side from 1982. This song was based on the mythological character who could foretell the future, but who no one believed. Beware. Great melodies and Frida lead vocal, but I thought the musical arrangement was lacking some punch. 8. Gonna Sing You My Livelong - from Waterloo, 1974. This is a pretty ballad where Frida makes you cry. She's 'the other woman' and lays her heart on the line. The string arrangement is very '70's epic. 9. Another Town, Another Train - from their debut album in 1973. This is probably their best song where Bjorn sings the lead. The flutes are so pretty and there's a hint of nostalgia. He's a guy that can't be pinned down. 10. Bang-A-Boomerang from Abba, 1975. This Album is more known for the mega hits SOS and Mamma Mia, but Bang-A-Boomerang was an amazing tune with a great chorus and energy. Give love, and you'll get it back.

This is my favorite song on this album. I have some claim to fame here. Back in around 1987, I found a cassette version of this album in a convenience store. I was already an ABBA fan and was ecstatic to find this. Some of the their albums had been moved to CD by then, but not the Visitors. But it was available on CD in the UK. So me the then 17yo teenager called a music shop at Covant Garden, England and had them ship me a CD of it. For a while I was probably the only person on the West coast to have it on CD.

Yes, according to Swedish Wikipedia, Per Lindvall played on _Soldiers, The Visitors, Cassandra,_ and _Under attack._ However, _When all is said and done_ also has very much Per Lindvall's stylistic signature on it. Benny or Tretow may well have mixed them up, as they sometimes tried several drummers on different versions of a song. There was also Åke Sundqvist on percussion on this album. The Visitors album- " darker subjects such as cold-war era threats of world destruction were explored in Agnetha’s ’Soldiers’ " 'Soldiers' is a critique of militarism. Billboard explains "emphasizing that although there seems to be so little one can do to prevent the machinations of soldiers and those who control them, we must "not look the other way/taking a chance/cos if the bugle starts to play/we too must dance". It's not "When the bulge starts to play" but "the BUGLE". The bugle is a brass instrument that was traditionally played when the cavalry arrived. The "bulge" is....well, you know what that is.

Chorus (to the best of my memory and hearing) Soldiers write the songs Soldiers sing the songs That you and I don't sing. They blow there horns And march alomg They drum their drums and look so stong You'll think that nothing in the world was wrong Soldiers write the songs Soldiers sing the songs That you and I won't sing Let's not look the other way Taking a chance 'Cos if the bugler starts to play We too must dance

Dereck,,,,,,,,Agnetha, did introduce herself, on more than one occasion as «ANNA»,,,,,,and before Stikkan, came up with the «ABBA» acronym, they were know as «BJÖRN BENNY ANNA & FRIDA». This was in the very beginning, when they were exclusively touring Scandinavia.

Once again thank you. You hear a song and then it sits with you. Time passes and then you hear the same song again; as I did now. You picked up on that the vocals were tuned down. Can you hear musical in there? I can now, thanks to you. Check out Chess from 1986 (A British/Swedish collaboration) Quite a successful musical.

The Visitors was my first "own" ABBA record. Christmas 1981 :) Together with "The Album". Best Christmas ever.... I remember as a kid having a hard time understanding what she was referring to with "December... reason to remember" It has always intrigued me - and hearing it now, it still does..... Yes, this was the Cold War being still very cold. If you want to hear two other 80s song dealing with the Cold War - listen to Elton John's "Nikita" and, especially Sting's "Russians". It will give you an idea how we felt, especially here in Europe.

Dereck you should look for the lyrics on this video, the lyrics are very beautiful and meaningful just like all abba's songs but particularly the entire visitors album. Usually their voices are crystal clear but for this track I had to look for the lyrics. Anyways great reaction as always Dereck! Please react to The Piper

Thank you again great reaction. This Visitors marathon is nearing its end, there are 3 album tracks to go; “Head over Heels” with Agnetha, “I Let the Music Speak” with Frida and “Two for the price of one” with Bjorn. Head over Heels was the follow up single to “One of Us” in Europe, I let the Music Speak signposts to Benny and Bjorn’s future in musicals and Two for the price of one - what can one say??? The oddball. The unloved child. The boozy late night bar singalong. You will either love it or hate it!

Per Lindvall (snare through out) on this track, he also played drums on "The Visitors" song but on main Drums....Ola Brunkert; he actually played on every single ABBA album. He and Rutgar Gunnarsson are the only session musicians that have played on every ABBA album. As far as "The Visitors" (the song) it's actually about the plight of Russian dissidents during the cold war 80's. (The Cold War was a theme that Bjorn and Benny wrote about quite often tbh)
