I was never an ABBA fan whatsoever as a young man, although my Dad and now my Daughters are huge fans, in saying that I am completely in awe of Bjorn and Benny’s truly magnificent songwriting talents.

Abba was bigger in the US than might think. They were played on the radio non-stop in the late 70's into the early 80's. And the Winner Takes it All might be my favorite Abba single. Great review John, and thanks for sharing.

The 'ST" album is for me ABBA's honeyfied maturity. One of their best supreme LPs they ever recorded and the well deserved year end best seller of whole 1980 in the UK.Pre-sales of the album were over 1 million units there and got in the book of Guiness for this unprecedented record at the time.

LAYLOM was a limited release, was out in the summer of 1980 and was a top 10 UK hit as well as the best selling 12 inch vynil single ever there by an artist up to then. Now it's one of Abba's most streamed songs iof their entire catalogue. And here's an interesting comment posted in the official UK chart site a couple of weeks ago by "Robbie" "'I'ld also forgotten about 'Lay All Your Love On Me' by Abba which was the first single to go top 10 as a 12" only release. No 7" version was made available as Benny and Bjorn apparently blocked the release of the track as a single. Abba were able to veto the release of an album track as a single but Epic Records found a loophole in the record contract which apparently restricted this veto to just 7" single releases. Presumably the contract was signed when 12" singles weren't really a consideration. No cassette format was released but cassette singles releases were very few and far between at the time.".

Btw "On and On" was Benny's kinda tribute to his Beach Boys inspirations and was no1 US Dance billboard release doubled with 'Lay all your Love on me" and there always was a video back in 1980 featuring the original unedited version. The ST album was a no1 for 9 weeks in the UK!

Well. Here in Sweden at the time.. 1979 was the divorce. And it was a bit uneasy about the group. SHOULD they really go on? Everbody was happy and proud when they did and the way they did it. But in a way this is their farewell. The last dance. And it shoud have stayed like that. The songs are a little more somber and the tone of it all is sad. A fitting last stance. Now, we know they went on with The Visitors and then showed up again in our time now. Lay all your love on me became a huge dance hit - still is. Winner takes it all a classic.

I liked a few songs from this album. Nothing has changed about it since it came out. ABBA is an acquired taste, which some songs grabbed me at various times. I loved Me and I and On and On and On. I played Happy New Year every year. The bonus tracks really make this a good album.

Still a fab album no question, I have no issues with the album artwork. Slightly flawed though, 8/10 is how I rate it.

Think this album did so well because it came out at Christmas time. Everyone bought it including me. Having heard winner takes it all and super trouper I was looking forward to it. But very disappointed Apart from the singles the rest is very average. On and on and on! Me and I. Andante happy new year. Pretty bad. The song lay all your love on me wasn't meant for a single. Only reached no.7. Like the piper though. Abba best work and biggest hits were written with help from stig anderson

On and on and on was not a singel, it was the b-side to Lay all your love on me 12 inch singel.

"On and On And On" was indeed a single in America. It was the third single released from the album as the A side. It peaked at #3 on my personal weekly top 40 chart. "Lay All Your Love On Me" was the B side.

@@Jukebox45s okay im sorry, but it was a very limited release.

I have never liked the "Super Trouper" single, either. It always left an unpleasant taste with me.
