It's usually best to have plan B-C-D ready in case something unexpected happens. I often run Trail of Cthulhu as investigative horror where I plan a few routes ahead of time, just in case someone fumbles a clue or maybe there's a misunderstanding and the players go off on a wrong track. I can't openly say "No wait, that's completely wrong, come back and look at the chandelier instead!" but I can adjust and put a clue in another spot that guides them back on track, just via another route.
@BelligerentPenguin10 күн бұрын
Here's something to add as a twist; one monk is not okay with what is happening, even though he's in on it. He could be a contact for the PC's and possibly be killed off to show how terribly blinded the abbot has become, or even as someone the PC's can attempt to rescue.

Also fun to see how you do the voices while you’re planning to try ideas on for size, you’re putting yourself in the NPC and PC shoes from the get-go, and you’ve developed that muscle to express that as playing the part. So I wasent sure what direction this would go but I LOVE the mutant silk worms idea! Fun fact which could help you're world building: there are a Mulberry specific type of nymphs called Morea. So perhaps these are Morea nymphs & that's why they are being targeted by the monks? Another idea is to have the 3 Ghosts be inspired by the ones in the local legend: A Paladin of the faith who died heroically in a battle who was laid to rest in the Abbey. A Monk/Cleric who had his head lobbed off (could change it from a randy man getting his comupence to a brewing accident?) & was entombed in the Abbey. And a female bastian of charity who actually managed a better job than the Abbot before she died (mysteriously), the Abbot himself had her entomed in the Abbey for her great work? These 3 souls were chosen by the Abbot & bound to his service.
@darklord88410 күн бұрын
Interesting idea about the carved-heart female bastian, maybe her image could inspire the tragedy of the Abbot as a villain? As in he could bemoan how high everyone's expectations were of him when he first took office, how everyone keeps praising the former keeper (maybe a prioress or female preacher) but used to ignore his efforts, and you can even hint to this with the laymen heaping praise on the Abbot like "Oh this is a great recent development, things haven't been this good since the previous keeper passed, it's a rather good year now it seems!" expressing their adoration for the prioress openly, but also subtly hinting how they were previously less than satisfied with the current Abbot's work. Having the Abbot be one to have murdered the prioress to gain power is a touch cliche. It could work, but I think it might put a fun extra twist if the three ghosts are, as you suggested, the three important figures now raised back to life to serve as henchmen to the Abbot. Because they are bound by a spell, they have no free will and cannot speak, but if the PCs go the extra mile and free them, the prioress ghost might assist them in a fun way by confronting the Abbot personally and you can pay off this "expectations vs. reality" subplot by having the Abbot profess to have achieved success and the prioress should be proud. Only for her to reject him entirely by claiming "Hollow prosperity built on sacrilege, desecration of nature and the deaths of innocents...I *never* wanted THIS!"

Since you asked, If I am developing this as a one shot, I would likely go with escorting the pilgrim through the woods and the abbey to the City. All the clues you mentioned might draw curiosity for the players to look into it. If I were dealing with players that were very cut and dry about their mission then I might have that pilgrim suddenly not show up for breakfast and not be found in his quarters. If I were incorporating this into an existing campaign I might have a relative of the PCs reach out and ask for the party's help in finding one of their relatives who disappeared while at the abbey. I might say the relative is one of the pilgrims who went missing. Regardless of what you do, I am loving this channel and what you are doing. I am looking forward to see where you end up next week. I'd actually pick up post-Abbey, so to speak. The Abbey fails, but suddenly, pilgrims are afraid to go near it, maybe some go missing. The PCs show up, poke around, and discover the place horribly desecrated. Statues broken and defaced, tombs cracked open, the mulberry tree now sporting what we'll call "strange fruit", the relic is gone (and this would be news to everyone)... and the heart is beating. The only clue is the cursed swamp, which is now home to someone (maybe the former Abbot?) who has tapped the power of the relic to raise the dead and is basically trying to get some form of revenge. Might even make the mulberry tree work as a catalyst, like the corpses are being corrupted as long as they're close to it. Non-Combat encounters: exploring the deserted abbey, scouting the swamp Combat encounters: undead on the way up, maybe stronger undead near the crypt, boss lair. You can then use the boss's lair as a launch point into another adventure, since it's a blank canvas.

Hi, this was an excellent video. I would take the direction of the Abbot hitting the party to do an adjacent task related to his plan. For example, the relic has gone missing and he desperately wants it back. Or he needs their help with transporting wagons of silk products which leads to a bandit raid… from forest critters? A dryad winds up being behind that, of course. The next point would be to give further hints to the party about the Abbot’s nefarious plans. Ents are going missing from the woods and swamplands and everyone is concerned (even the Abbot, who wants to know where to send his Ghosts next). Searching for the ents can lead to an encounter with a Ent Possessed by several Ghosts (manipulating its limbs) guiding it to a secret entrance to the crypts where the silkworms can feast. Thwarting the ghosts can lead to a social encounter where the Ghosts reveal their connection to the Abbot through necromancy (they don’t even need to name drop him; they just call him the Necromancer or Master). Heading down into the crypts, the players may then discover the feeding place and find the Abbot there nourishing the silkworms and commanding the Ghosts.

I love this series! And I like seeing your thought process I'd like to share some ideas: For an Abbot to go so far as to defile graves and kill for a cursed mess of a swamp, I think he should have a particular emotional attachment to the place itself. This can be through the holy relic within Let's say the rights to this holy relic was passed down from generation to generation of a certain noble family, given to the eldest daughter of the bloodline. The most recent members of this bloodline had a butler, one who stayed with and served the current eldest daughter for much of his life. A tragedy struck with the bloodline suddenly ending, a curse that killed them. The butler whose purpose was to serve them was now lost without one. The king/ruler decides that since the relic was bound to the bloodline, it should be burried with them, hence the abbey. But he wasn't going to invest into an abbey for no reason, no, he wanted a return on this investment, thus he thought to make it a silk producing "factory", and the one most qualified to be the abbot, the one who knew the bloodline's traditions most with respect to their religion and relic was none other than the butler himself Thus he became its abbot, and despite the tragedy, all was going well. The curse, however, kept spilling. Radiating from the crypt, from the very holy relic that was held within, and soon, what was once a promising land turned into a swamp Things only got worse and worse for the abbot as he saw all potential ways to maintain the abbey (and thus still serve his purpose) fall apart. If he doesn't turn this place around, if he doesn't get recognition from the king, the abbey will be lost. So he kept taking increasingly dire measures to keep the abbey afloat At first he convinced dryads to help rejuvenate the land to keep the trees alive and with it the silk worms, as the local dryads were at first confused as to why their land was turning into swamp Eventually, though, they'd realize that the curse is from the abbey itself and instead of helping, now sought to destroy it. With no choice left, the abbot along with his monks fought back against the dryads and successfully held them back Yet now there was no way to fight back the effects of the curse, so the abbot used the dead bodies of the dryads, reanimated them, and used them to tend to it However, the foul necromancy mixed with the dryads nature magic made the curse worse and worse. Eventually, the only things the abbot could nurture was not the land, but the silk worms themselves, using the dryad's magic to make them grow greater. But as you say, they require greater sustenance And so the abbot went into this cycle where he raised dryads, make some kill other dryads while others tended to the worms, feeding them to the worms What do you think? I didn't want to go too far away from what you mentioned, but rather expand onto it

My thought is that the Abby, not able to produce silk or drain the swamp are using what they say are special funeral rites, but are actually using necromancy to use the hearts to pump the swamp into the mulberry tree. The rest of the Abby is prestigious and clean but one look at the mulberry tree and anyone can tell there's something wrong, there's a smell of much, and the iron tinge of blood in the air and they Abby uses many perfumes and tries to decorate the tree to ease suspicions. The PCs have to struggle with disrupting the necromancy, which will cause rhe swamp to take back over ruining the crops, or trying to contain the mulberry tree and 'filter' the evil/decay that it it causing.

In this setting I had this idea for the Cursed Swamp. There are 3 main types of will o' wisps. Natural, Fey & Undead. All are evil & will feud if they present together. The forest could be where the natural or fey come in & the swamp proper seem an easy undead host. They are both fighting for the negative emotions from the local deceased survivors & the lass with the missing heart as a hook here too. What I've written is more detailed & has more interconnections with other fey beings & locals but have fun with this perhaps.

This is gonna be a great one-shot. The celebrated professor of magic and history, Jurard Kellemburg, has discovered the handkerchief of St. Zanethia, and was bestowed an impressive grant by The Academy for additional historical research. Of course, he cannot legally use this money for anything else, but he's decided to invest that money into the silk trade anyways, promising a fortune to the local abbey if they're willing to assist them. The financially struggling abbey, of course, could not refuse. To produce the abundance of silk Jurard wants, he turned normal silk worms into giant silk worms. The local forests dryads are ideal for feeding them. However, hunting them has caused them to go into hiding. Rumors of undead roaming the forests has also been unsettling the locals. Since then, a number of travelers, usually nobody of importance, have vanished without a trace. An investigator from the capital came into town to investigate these incidents, but she too has vanished.

I love the idea of this channel and what has been done so far. I’m worried about the traction for the channel. I would assume the first episode you release about going through the physical space will always do well, where the next 2 or 3 videos will likely struggle. i really really like where its all going., just adding my 5cents, if some GM is not sure about undead portion of the game, it can be Easly changed into some devil plans. We have Abbot which is very desperate, so he could be doing shady rituals and deals down in the place that nobody is visiting, getting help of demons instead of undead in the Dryad kidnapping. it really depends which version Gm is more comfortable with as they do sound very simillar to play out. And maybe the Heart was corrupted in the process of contacting demons, leading to some next adventure of "what should we do now with this cursed object?" especially if you go with Collecting type of adventure and now you are not sure if it's really good idea to show it on Parade. ( Maybe Devil predicted all this outcome and he really wanted the party to bring cursed heart to the Parade, leading to some demonic portal opening in middle of it? So many options, your call. )

I had the Idea of the abbot having disposed of noble landholders, who demanded money from the abbey, for staying on their land, which they can't pay. But when they planted the mulberry tree, to get silk and by that some money, they accidentaly brought a ghost spinner tree, which allowes restless spirits around it to act in the physical world. With the Abbot near the holy hole, they couldn't get to him, but would one after the other get one of the monks, leaving just their bloodless hearts in the leaden collection box of the abbey. Only when the abbot repents and openly confesses their crimes, they will stop haunting the abbey

I know your development process is "ahead" of this video, but there are a couple of things that could have been included in this one: 1) If the relic has been sold on the sly to raise money for the abbey, the purchaser must be wealthy and possibly "high born." People with that kind of acquisitive nature and wealth like to show off. Eventually others will have learned of the acquisition and the secret will leak out. Now a twist... the abbey has sold the "holy relic" several times. One of the purchasers has learned that another person claims to have possession. Let your imagination take flight. 2) My initial understanding was that multiple mulberry trees were planted, not just one. An orchard of these trees--needed to keep any significant worm population alive--might attract those dryads. The dryads become palatable to the worms because they take on mulberry-like "taste" characteristics. A side angle... modification of the worms became initially necessary because standard worms did not like the flavor of the type of mulberry trees that were planted (the taste dislike is true and was mentioned in the first video). 3) There is quite a process associated with silk processing (I learned a lot about it for the oddest reason that you could possibly concoct). It involves multiple stages and processing systems. It starts with the ingenious frames on which the worms build their cocoons. I can imagine the large ones needed for these large worms. You need to consider what exactly the abbey is selling: Empty cocoons? Thread separated from the cocoons and wound on skeins (yet more equipment and processes)? Cloth--in which case the looms you mentioned would come into play? I presume the monks provide the labor. 4) This will initially seem way off track, but I'll get back to your story in bit... I presume you have heard of the lake high in the Himalayas of India where many skeletal remains are found. These have concussive injuries to their skulls. The original presumption was that these people were caught in the open by a heavy-duty hailstorm. This lake is on a pilgrimage route (first link back to your story... pilgrims coming to/through the area). More recent analysis showed two major things: 1) The bodies were deposited over a large span of years, and 2) There was a suspicious lack of valuables or even semi-valuables. And how did they all end up in the water? The current theory is that Thugees joined pilgrim bands on pretext of being, themselves, pilgrims. The campsite beside the lake, far from civilization, provided a good attack and disposal site. So having groups of pilgrims vanish without record has precedent. These are sinners seeking absolution after all. The worms must be fed. Confession accepted.
@Guydadventures4 күн бұрын
This is awesome and look at all that additional information! I'll admit I didn't go into a huge amount of research on the silk production. As a child I raised silkworms and use to spindle their thread (and then get bored and move on). But yes! Such excellent ideas. The pilgrim attack - wonderful idea. Maybe the bodies are luring the silkworms out to the swamp as the scent of carrion draws them there?

I've always been a fan of the idea that the true patron of a religious site is a guarded secret. My thought was that the tree is the last remaining real connection to the deity people think they are venerating within the structure. The Holy Hole is said to be a place of ultimate prayer, where the most pious are selected to be transport, or "lifted," closer to their god. In reality, they are consumed by the very creature that brainwashed and mind-controls the head priest. This also opens up different end results. Do they kill the head priest? things seem to be solved, but not in the long run, as the creature just picks a new leader. Do they find out about the creature, and kill it? There is now a religious schism threatening to tear the local town apart. Do they connect with the tree, and find a way to revive it? Now there is an inquisition, where the creature wants all "false" believers killed, weakening the connection to the real deity again. The happy ending, of course, is taking out the creature and reviving the tree.

In an attempt to gain fame and recognition (and a good bit of profit) the Abbot stumbles across an ancient ritual to create "Devil's Silk." By feeding silk worms the blood of the faithful they change them in a way that makes a special iridescent silk in high amounts that has become the rage of high society. He rebrands the "Devil's Silk" to "Heaven Silk" and the fame has drawn pilgrims to the abbey, a good number of which go missing only to be fed to the silk worms. The silkworms them selves live in the holy hole, the relic has been brought up to the main chapel so more people can view it in a safe location. Possible encounters: The party encounters a group of bandits that only seem interested in driving people away from the Abby rather than rob them. They are lead by a former Monk that was mummified as part of the ritual to create the devil's silk and escaped, their heart is at the center of the holy hole where the worms are fed. A famous tailor hires the party to discover the secret of the silk. While seeking shelter at the abbey the party has swarms of silk worms set upon them in their sleep. The mobs are weak enough, but they are able to wrap the sleeping party in silk while they sleep, that they have to break free from in order to not be eaten.

I'd have the party stumble on the Abbey. The abbot, conscience stricken over the death of a pilgrim, refuses to see them. The monks themselves are akin to the cast of The Name of the Rose - a bizarre bunch of misfits and neurotics, with many different reasons for having chosen this life, few genuinely religious. One young idealist decides he must act on his conscience and tell the party what's happening - but his report seems disjointed, inconsistent and unreliable. Abbot Purcell evades the PCs at every opportunity. But the spirit of Lady Windemere, who's heart lies in the lead box, will not have her cherished Abbey soiled by murder most foul...
