I wish people would stop commenting on someone when they clearly don't watch her. All of these comments are really toxic telling her that they hope she 'changes" and can "break" whatever is going on...she has diagnosed mental disorders including a personality disorder/OCD. It heavily affects her diet and view of herself but it is not something that she can "break" or "change". Therapy - which she receives regularly - can help but she will likely suffer with the disorder the majority of her life. And she can enjoy life with her disorder, she is not miserable. She just does things differently and thinks differently and that's okay

Abbey finding your videos has been a true blessing. I've never had someone talk about food the way you do. I didn't even realise my mind was so fogged with all this diet culture. You've really set me on the right path with my health and to seek some professional advice. I've never had to worry about what I ate because I was always so thin as a teenager, but the junk food really caught up with me, add to that some stress from work and my health has taken a nosedive in the last 2 years. I felt overwhelmed with how to get back to feeling healthy (do i go back to being vegan, do I do keto, should I stop eating so much?) but now I feel so calm and confident in eating a good quanitity of healthy whole foods! I’ve been successfully vegan for 4 years now. I’ve actually managed to improve my health as a vegan compared to when I still ate meat and other animal products. However, these “influencers” like Kalel make the entire vegan movement look bad. They starve themselves and become deficient in basically everything, don’t feel well as a result and then resort to animal products again and announcing to their audience that the vegan diet isn’t practical or good for you. It’s simple. Eat when you’re hungry, eat variety, don’t restrict. Your body knows what it needs. If you’re hungry all the time, there’s a reason.

According to the US My Plate (I take it that's where she's from) the food groups are Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Protein, Dairy (which includes soymilk). Please do a video on Raw Alignment/Alyse Parker. She used to be raw vegan and starved herself to the point where she was malnourished and deficient. She then went full on carnivore. She still has her old "What I eat in a Day Raw Vegan" videos up. It'd be nice to see a comparison of both from an actual RD, even though she starves and restricts herself on both. *Edit* you should also check out her colonic experience video. Yes but I was 15/16 and very easy to manipulate. I had no knowledge about nutrition, just like any other teenager. Of course it wasnt her fault 100% but she was part of the problem. We have to acknowledge that influencers nowadays have a huge power over their audience and they can manipulate people into thinking they need to live one way or the other. I don't think it was my fault that I watched her videos, I didn't know what I was doing, I was too young to understand what healthy eating actually means and what restricting looked like. When someone puts out a video for the world to see, it doesnt matter the intention behind it (Kalel probably didnt mean any harm), its still going to have an effect over the audience so people have to be aware of this, research and not just claim facts because it seems to work. Yes her diet made her lose weight but it also damaged her health and no one knew...

One of the comments here says Kalel used to say never to eat more than half your meal! Imagine what that can do to a teenager's mind, or even a worse, a child's. She cant just say that, girls hear that and see her with her beautiful body and they are probably gonna want to be like her. Having that mindset around food is super restrictive and can definately lead to anorexia or binge eating (after restricting).

You need to approach these negative thoughts you're having with reason and kindness, and recognize that you're being unreasonably hard on yourself when you are, but that can be difficult if you're in a really bad place. There's no shame in seeing a professional for these kinds of thoughts if they're getting in the way of your life or happiness. As for the headaches... Yes omg, haha. I went on vacation this summer and had fish when I couldn't find any good vegan protein options out in the middle of nowhere (I normally eat a vegan diet). Someone asked if I "felt better" when I returned home and I couldn't stop laughing because it reminded me of her. Also, that came from a omnivore, which makes me think it's a common misconception that you immediately "feel better" after being "deprived" of animal protein. Given her money-grubbing ways, she likely made that statement to appeal to those that already think this to get views and $$.

Not everything is good immediately, but believe me - the positive effects can be felt very very soon. Also eating meat makes many of us feel more grounded, it's not just about the nutritional aspects.

Suziezur Freiheit I’ll have to respectfully disagree, I am sure if you’re eating a junk food diet and not supplementing b12 if you “improve” your nutrient intake you will feel better. Personally I feel amazing on a vegan diet, not only does it align with my views I feel like I have a bountiful selection of healthy and delicious food at my finger tips. I can’t imagine flesh and bones making me feel “grounded”, the thought of harming another being makes me feel revolted.

@@natashabot4838 Awesome. I ate a whole foods vegan diet while supplementing b12 and vitamin d and eating maaaannnyyy calories. At a certain point, my health started to decline and then after I had tried out so many things I reintroduced a little bit of meat again. Not beautiful in terms of animal welfare, but this is what happened.

I looked and felt SO MUCH healthier!! I made great gains in my workouts and my digestion, skin, and hair were so much better. Weight gain is NOT some terrible thing if your body really just needs more nourishment!!

Cecelia Kra Well, her son and my friend grew up drinking it once or twice a year. He’s Guyanese-American and she’s Jamaican-American so for them it’s a cultural thing. But they said they hadn’t had it in a couple months of years and I grew up in the South, many generations removed from any sort non-“standard” American traditions so I’d never had it at all. Plus we’re in our mid-twenties, so when I say “convince” I don’t mean it in a pressuring, overbearing sort of way. More in a well-meaning way. But between both of their families, we at a LOT of traditional Caribbean food and ya girl is NOT used to that at all so I figured, “why not”. But then we didn’t know we were gonna be leaving the next day so it was just a mess all around lol.

I guess she took down the videos she had that explained her journey away from veganism. She made a couple videos where she talked about health problems she had been having and how these doctors kept saying nothing was wrong with her so she kept going to different doctors and made them do a bunch of tests where they told her that her body had a million problems all related to her diet. She has struggled with disordered eating, and a ton of her fans were pretty shocked when she came out. Unnatural Vegan did a great response video that broke down the science she tried to cite and why it was incorrect or misguided.

I think it would affect anyone's mental health but seems to have hit Kalel pretty hard especially this year. And of course the constant criticism from followers and other influencers. I had that “cleansing” mindset when I first started dieting. I felt like whenever I ate junk food, it made me “toxic” or “impure” so I’d use the teas and stuff to “get rid of it”. Now I’ve been bulimic for over 4 years, I have chronic gastritis, GERD, and my bowels no longer move normally due to constant use of laxatives. Beauty isn’t worth ruining your body. Stuff should be labeled as what it truly is. “Try this new diet tea! It dehydrates you to make it SEEM like you lost weight but in reality it’s just all the water you’re shitting out! Wow!”

Hey Abby, fellow RD here. I have a hard time understanding why nutrition professionals harp on about how vegan diets need to be "well planned" and require "education" in order to be nutritionally adequate. This is true for ALL diets. We have an epidemic of nutrition-caused diseases that are overwhelming our healthcare systems because omnivorous diets are largely not well-planned and are nutritionally inadequate. Most people seeking the consult of a dietitian are not vegan/vegetarian. Most people coming in for care for their heart disease, diabetes, GI cancers are not vegan/vegetarian. I think that promoting the idea that omnivorous diets are safer by nature because they "cover all of the bases" is not only demonstrably false, but really does a disservice to the public. ALL diets can be dangerous and lead to health problems and I would argue that those issues seen in people on lazy omnivorous diets are more damaging and serious than those seen with people on lazy vegan diets.

I am vegan and sometimes I will have a vegan kitchener bun for lunch :/ but the difference is maybe that I do not really snack. I eat what I like and nothing more at meal times. If you want to lose weight just eat normal portions of what you like. You wont crave anything because you know you can eat anything. I always start my day with a fruit smoothie and I put oats and seeds in it. I always have a large breakfast of 700 or so calories as I have a physical job. Then I will have what I like for lunch (a normal portion). If it is a donut then it is a donut and even if it were pizza I will stop when full. Mindful eat works!!!! But trust me when you don't restrict anything you like you wont crave it, you will opt for healthy options naturally. I love this tomato soup at plant 4. I get a chai with it and omg I am in heaven.

Totally agree with most of your message in this video. The part were you shared how much responsibility do influencers have and the power to change the modern diet-body shaming culture for the good is something that resonated with me deeply. Thank you for your videos Abbey. Great channel.

I'm so happy I found your channel, I've just subscribed and will be sharing your channel with my friends who ask me advice on nutrition and calories, what's good and bad for them. I'm not an expert, a nutrition or dietitian so it's nice to have found a person that knows what she's talking about and is good at explaining how it works. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and constructive criticism and tips. And the editing is so good, a wonderfully well put together video 👌🏼🏵️

I dont know how I've never found this channel before but it is so helpful and awesome. Thanks so much for the education and I can't wait to watch more videos and make some healthy changes to my diet. I have been so tired of seeing all these "skinny" products and herbal detoxers knowing they arent as good as the media claims. Its great to get some real talk in the food world and get some ideas on how to balance my diet better without these hack products. Thank you so much!

I once had a doctor tell me I should be eating 1000 calories a day because he said it was "healthier" and I told him he was an idiot and never went to him again. At that same meeting he told me that by seeing the specialists I see I was wasting the medical community's money. I have many reasons and many illnesses that I have to see those specialists. When I requested a new doctor from the same office they just sighed and said they didn't even have to ask me why. A few months later I get a letter saying he was no longer employed.

Someone pointed out on Unnatural Vegan's video on Kalel that a lot of the symptoms Kalel described were associated with breast implant rejection. She also used to take Accutane, which can definitely eff your body up. Kalel has definite body image issues, maybe her veganism was less about the animals and more about covering an ED. Not judging her but she has a following and triggers me personally with the weight obsession.

I feel like she portrays the voice in so many of our heads and the struggle so so so many people face today. I’m glad Abbey reviewed her though because many people are stuck in this mindset. Intuitive eating is hard when you’ve been trained to restrict.

Can you do a video debunking some of Freelee’s bizarre claims? Would that be problematic? 😂 her scare tactics in her reviews are insane. Like that women eating eggs is equal to smoking cigarettes.

Yes! In a recent video she says she doesn’t believe an autoimmune disease is the immune system attacking itself (I forget what the specific disease she was referring to was called). I feel like she has zero evidence to support her claims, aside from from individual experiences, which isn’t really valid

Claire Lewis She claims that every experience she has will be every other persons experience. It’s sickening. And she also harps on people’s caffeine addictions if they drink coffees or tea, when so many people just drink those things for pleasure and not for caffeine benefits. She’s so weird 😭💀

That 1-egg-equals-5-cigarettes claim actually comes from a peer reviewed medical study. That said, I think it's great that people question other people's sources, especially when what they are talking about is not in the area of their expertise.

On the rice front, Trader Joe’s has this frozen brown rice which makes making things like kimchi fried rice (one of my favorite foods) super super easy to make. I do actually love using the kimchi juice for the sauce, I mix it with soy sauce, mirin, bean paste, gochujang, and a little ketchup or maple syrup.

Thank you for saying that gaining weight can be healthy! I was vegetarian for 5 years and eventually became very anemic. I started incorporating meat back into my diet slowly, and I instantly felt better! I had more energy because my iron levels spiked back up (I was sleeping all day before), my nails were thick, I wasn’t as depressed, and I gained 20 pounds. When I first gained this weight, I felt extremely uncomfortable in my skin, but I eventually grew more comfortable and confident with my body. I am so happy you mentioned that a weight gain can be a positive effect from a healthy diet. Sometimes I still feel like I need to drop those 20 pounds, but now I know that I do not need to feel that way because that weight gain was needed. Thank you 💗

ANECDOTAL. Academy of Dietetics and Nutrition largest US organization of nutrition professionals (100,000 members) have deemed a plant based diet perfectly healthy through all stages of life, from pregnancy infancy for athletes and elderly. If you did become anemic its because you were eating a poorly planned diet. Not because you were lacking animal protein. You obviously were still consuming that as a vegetarian anyway.

T Eye I agree, but I believe it is just not right for me. I recently tried to go vegan with an well planned diet (plenty of dark leafy greens, beans, tofu, iron, and b12 supplements), because I believe that is what is best for the average person’s health and the planet’s health. I became anemic within a few weeks. I think it is just difficult for my body to retain iron even when given plenty of sources, and iron supplements don’t seem to do the trick. It’s just easier and healthier for me, personally to eat meat. I definitely don’t bash a vegan or vegetarian diet, if anything, I would love to go back, but I just get anemic very quickly. It’s not a sustainable option for me at this time. Maybe that will change in the future.
