I’ve been successfully vegan for 4 years now. I’ve actually managed to improve my health as a vegan compared to when I still ate meat and other animal products. However, these “influencers” like Kalel make the entire vegan movement look bad. They starve themselves and become deficient in basically everything, don’t feel well as a result and then resort to animal products again and announcing to their audience that the vegan diet isn’t practical or good for you. It’s simple. Eat when you’re hungry, eat variety, don’t restrict. Your body knows what it needs. If you’re hungry all the time, there’s a reason.

We have to acknowledge that influencers nowadays have a huge power over their audience and they can manipulate people into thinking they need to live one way or the other. I don't think it was my fault that I watched her videos, I didn't know what I was doing, I was too young to understand what healthy eating actually means and what restricting looked like. When someone puts out a video for the world to see, it doesnt matter the intention behind it (Kalel probably didnt mean any harm), its still going to have an effect over the audience so people have to be aware of this, research and not just claim facts because it seems to work. Yes her diet made her lose weight but it also damaged her health and no one knew...

I really don't blame you for not collaborating with one of those tea weight loss companies! I've had a few people try to recruit me on Instagram to push those coffee shot drinks that apparently boost your metabolism 😂 I asked the recruiter if they could provide me with any scientific studies/research based on the product and sadly she could not but she said they had plenty of positive customer reviews 😂 I informed her I cannot promote/sell something based on anecdotal evidence. I've completely shut out diet culture and a huge part of that is down to watching your videos, so thank you abbey!

Also, your advice helped me so much - I've been gaining weight after getting out of a cycle of disordered eating and (like kalel) viewed it as a bad sign, even though my blood results have been better. I'll never forget this vlog she made (before she was even vegan) where she said she eats a cucumber slowly for dinner (just a cucumber) with a fork and knife. I did it for week at least. Gosh. I guess she took down the videos she had that explained her journey away from veganism. She made a couple videos where she talked about health problems she had been having and how these doctors kept saying nothing was wrong with her so she kept going to different doctors and made them do a bunch of tests where they told her that her body had a million problems all related to her diet. She has struggled with disordered eating, and a ton of her fans were pretty shocked when she came out. Unnatural Vegan did a great response video that broke down the science she tried to cite and why it was incorrect or misguided.

But can tell she is struggling with her weight /body image, she did a video showing her body a few videos before this she looks great like she is still so slim. It's such a shame she obviously struggling with some type of body dyspmorphia, hope she can really get some help for her mental health, I don't think she is a bad person at all I just think is in a bad place. But don't think it's sending the best message for her to say a girl as slim as her needs to loose weight and promoting skinny tea to her followers.

R M I agree. For me, I don’t think ANYBODY should promote skinny tea because it’s a straight up scam, but because, like you said, she’s clearly going through some shit with her weight/physique, it just makes it that much more enticing for girls who are also vulnerable or insecure about their weight.

@@SasukesHott It's such a shame that she thinks at (115lbs she mentioned she was in a video) that she desperately needs to loose weight, that's a perfectly healthy weight. I think it would affect anyone's mental health but seems to have hit Kalel pretty hard especially this year. And of course the constant criticism from followers and other influencers. I had that “cleansing” mindset when I first started dieting. I felt like whenever I ate junk food, it made me “toxic” or “impure” so I’d use the teas and stuff to “get rid of it”. Now I’ve been bulimic for over 4 years, I have chronic gastritis, GERD, and my bowels no longer move normally due to constant use of laxatives. Beauty isn’t worth ruining your body. Stuff should be labeled as what it truly is. “Try this new diet tea! It dehydrates you to make it SEEM like you lost weight but in reality it’s just all the water you’re shitting out! Wow!”

Hey Abby, fellow RD here. I have a hard time understanding why nutrition professionals harp on about how vegan diets need to be "well planned" and require "education" in order to be nutritionally adequate. This is true for ALL diets. We have an epidemic of nutrition-caused diseases that are overwhelming our healthcare systems because omnivorous diets are largely not well-planned and are nutritionally inadequate. Most people seeking the consult of a dietitian are not vegan/vegetarian. Most people coming in for care for their heart disease, diabetes, GI cancers are not vegan/vegetarian. I think that promoting the idea that omnivorous diets are safer by nature because they "cover all of the bases" is not only demonstrably false, but really does a disservice to the public. ALL diets can be dangerous and lead to health problems and I would argue that those issues seen in people on lazy omnivorous diets are more damaging and serious than those seen with people on lazy vegan diets.

I've had no problems with malnutrition besides when I gave up meat at 18 and developed a severe iron deficiency, I then went back to eating meat and have had no problems since Now, I'm attempting vegetarianism again because I have the education I need to make sure my diet isn't detrimental to me. When cutting out key parts of a diet, you do need the education on how to replace them with alternatives

Informative and respectful video! I would like to be clear though that vegan is an ethics based lifestyle that works to minimize harm in all aspects of living as much as possible. I am vegan and sometimes I will have a vegan kitchener bun for lunch :/ but the difference is maybe that I do not really snack. I eat what I like and nothing more at meal times. If you want to lose weight just eat normal portions of what you like. You wont crave anything because you know you can eat anything. I always start my day with a fruit smoothie and I put oats and seeds in it. I always have a large breakfast of 700 or so calories as I have a physical job. Then I will have what I like for lunch (a normal portion). If it is a donut then it is a donut and even if it were pizza I will stop when full. Mindful eat works!!!! But trust me when you don't restrict anything you like you wont crave it, you will opt for healthy options naturally. I love this tomato soup at plant 4. I get a chai with it and omg I am in heaven.

Thank you for saying that gaining weight can be healthy! I was vegetarian for 5 years and eventually became very anemic. I started incorporating meat back into my diet slowly, and I instantly felt better! I had more energy because my iron levels spiked back up (I was sleeping all day before), my nails were thick, I wasn’t as depressed, and I gained 20 pounds. When I first gained this weight, I felt extremely uncomfortable in my skin, but I eventually grew more comfortable and confident with my body. I am so happy you mentioned that a weight gain can be a positive effect from a healthy diet. Sometimes I still feel like I need to drop those 20 pounds, but now I know that I do not need to feel that way because that weight gain was needed. Thank you 💗

ANECDOTAL. Academy of Dietetics and Nutrition largest US organization of nutrition professionals (100,000 members) have deemed a plant based diet perfectly healthy through all stages of life, from pregnancy infancy for athletes and elderly. If you did become anemic its because you were eating a poorly planned diet. Not because you were lacking animal protein. You obviously were still consuming that as a vegetarian anyway.
@madison25195 жыл бұрын
T Eye I agree, but I believe it is just not right for me. I recently tried to go vegan with an well planned diet (plenty of dark leafy greens, beans, tofu, iron, and b12 supplements), because I believe that is what is best for the average person’s health and the planet’s health. I became anemic within a few weeks. I think it is just difficult for my body to retain iron even when given plenty of sources, and iron supplements don’t seem to do the trick. It’s just easier and healthier for me, personally to eat meat. I definitely don’t bash a vegan or vegetarian diet, if anything, I would love to go back, but I just get anemic very quickly. It’s not a sustainable option for me at this time. Maybe that will change in the future.
