If you're curious, the original Japanese version of Ghost Stories did JUST well enough during the initial anime boom of the early 2000's that the originals owners thought "maybe this will do well in the states. They like their monster of the week stuff." So, they sold the rights to the show to the company that localized it in the states. Them getting this show came with two conditions. 1: you can't change the name of any of the characters. 2: you can't change how any of the ghosts are banished. As you can see, this didn't stop them much. They realized that there was no chance of this show recouping it's costs, so they just decided to turn it into a shitpost, and as a result, we have the only series that got an official abridge treatment. You honestly really should watch the whole series. It's only 15 episodes, and after episode 5, you're in such a state of disbelief that it goes by FAST. (Side note, the rabbit episode is my favorite. The "not because you're a rabbit, but because your black" line almost made me pass out I was laughing so hard the first time I saw it.)

This is actually pretty much made up completely. It's a popular story the dub team used to protect themselves, but the show did INCREDIBLY well with an average of 12.5% viewers (Pokemon is 12.6% at the time). Love the dub for the extreme piece of shit it is (in a good way I think), but also loved the original. Putting this out there so this made up story dissapears from the "facts" people say about this anime.

Love the Dub to bits as well, even tho knowing that the supposed funny story of its creation isnt actually true did sour the feelings somewhat. Its still a fucking riot tho^^

There was a fair amount of alcohol involved….i recall them saying that the entire series was done in one day, it was easy since there wasn’t much in the line of retakes. But you can tell how their filter degrades as the series goes on. In the later episodes they have no filter and are outright cussing

The short version of how this ended up with one of the funniest dubs is as follows: The show BOMBed hard in Japan, now when they sell shows to for syndication they don't sell one show, they do packages, basically you ant Pokemon? You gotta take these garbage Anime as well, it's all or nothing. This meant they had a known stinker on their hands but wanted to recoop some of the $$$ they were forced to spend, so they gave the VA's Carte Blanche to do it as they wanted. So the VA's would get drunk and have a rule, whomever got into the booth first, SET THE TONE for that episode. So if you watch the Episodes some are really messed up as a couple of the VA's were either really drunk or just really want to Troll the other VA's. So yeah, that's pretty much the short version of Ghost Stories Hilarious VA. PS: I said Pokemon as an EXAMPOLE of a good Anime that companies wanted to get for syndication, I have No f**ken clue what Ghost Stories was packaged with, I just know how the industry works and used Pokemon as an example... don't um achtually me...

I don't know how true it is, but the story goes that this show did so terribly in japan that when it came time to localize it, they basically said "fuck it, do whatever you want". And that they did

I don't really know off the top of my head exactly why this dub was able to just do whatever it wanted but I think it might have had to do with how the company that dubbed it received it as a bonus in a large bundle of anime rights they had bought to dub and that Ghost Stories being a bonus they just decided to do whatever with it.
