Awesome! Because I LOVE this story. Sometimes to save $, we'd just grab the the entire art or accounting department and have them cram in the booth to do all that crowd shit or background babble you need but don't need it scripted or acted. Some studios call it foley (which is actually incorrect, foley is all the non-verbal sound effects you have to recreate) or walla, which is a term this way-past-his-prime director used once at the studio. But he also credits himself with coming up with Star Wars because he passed George Lucas in a hall once, so.... always check your sources. ANYHOO, I just loved the head of accounting at ADV, a SAINT named Barbara. It's no secret ADV (or Seraphim or whatever their alias is now) LOVED elastic accounting, whether it was finding a way to eek out a lower licensing fee from the Japanese, find a way to bill them more, or when they inevitably found themselves in financial or legal limbo, used good ole boy Texas' biz friendly and ancient financial laws to narrowly escape...punishment? Justice? Inevitability? Who's to say? But poor Barbara should have died a harried, hypertensious alcoholic by now. INSTEAD, Barbara had such an easy-come-easy-go attitude about everything, she was a ROCK. Two things to make Barbara even more hilariously complex. She has THE hickiest, backwoods, painful southern twang I've ever heard and I'm born and raised in Texas. I've heard 'em all. She's got wild frizzy blond hair she always has pulled back. Not a flashy dresser. A bit curvy. You put all that together, and I, you, me, most anybody who's brave enough to be honest with themselves, sees that package and IMMEDIATELY makes assumptions about her, labels all her parts, and shoves her in a box thinking, Duh, what's to see here isn't it obvious? Uh, no. Barbara is a PLAYER. I know she goes to Vegas often. And I'm PRETTY positive she gets the key to those illegal high roller games that the hyperintelligent gamers and the stupid rich who don't care about losing money they'll pay anything to be with the cool kids get let into. Think Mrs. Sloane or Molly Something or whatever the Jessica Chastain movie was. I could sit in Barbara's office and listen to her stories for HOURS. LOVE that woman. THE SECOND I saw this laundry scene come up I was IMMEDIATELY: White trash. I'd already kind of established that with Satuski's family not having a dishwasher and a few other things I noticed in the animation. So I make a beeline for accounting. "Barbara! What are you doing?" "Nuuuthin'." "EXACTLY! That's exactly what I want. Come with me." Good sport that she is (I swear either I am the most charming motherfucker in the world or because I'm a director they're all scared of me, but I usually get people to do pretty much anything I want), she gets in the booth and I quickly come up with lines for her. "Stayvin, yoo knoww Eye cain't ayuct." "Barbara, believe me, all you have to do is sat the lines and you'll be brilliant. Ready, Adam? Recording." 20 seconds later my engineer Adam and I are laughing so hard we can't talk. And Barbara's behind the glass just going "What? What'd I do?" THANK YOU for reminding me of that decades-old story. I really SHOULD write a book about all the GS shit that happened cuz there are countless little things like this that went down. SORRY for such a long answer, but hey, this is GOLD! One more tidbit and I'll quit hijacking the feed. In the sports festival episode, after the bit where Satsuki goes "But this hurricane..." the sun comes out. And I can't say FOR SURE but I THINK we didn't use ENOUGH of the song where we would legally have to pay to license it, but I can't be sure and it's not like ADV had a team of standards and practices with every show checking for shit like that. (Think anime is glamorous? Dude, until I redid the entire office and studios--and I may be gay but I'm not a decorator--because Sony bigwigs were coming and I told those idiots that the place was such a fuckin' dump Sony won't concentrate on what you're trying to sell them because they'll be too busy on the lookout for the pizza rat. After I was through with that place? It looked like a luxe Japanese hash lounge you'd want to have sex in. It was smokin' cool.) GET ON WITH IT, STE7EN! Yeah, right. So the sun comes out and I thought it would be funny in that silent space to put a kind of Greek chorus there. You know, commenting on the action like the ancient plays used because camera angles and perspective hadn't been invented yet. So I grabbed Barbara and Chere from accounting, a couple of the art directors in production who had a minute, put 'em all in the booth and typed out a few of the lyrics from the musical Annie's classic "Tomorrow" That's why when the sun shines in the show, you hear "Woo!/The sun'll come out/Tomorrow/Bet your bottom it'll come out tomorrow (or something like that)." Well if you listen to the crappy choir, there's ONE voice that stands out in particular. Sounds like someone wasn't watching the guest list close enough and some hayseed half-bombed with corn liquor is up there with the rest of 'em, loud, tone deaf, and off key. That would be Barbara. Take special note of the end of the song where she's basically like "Fuck it, I'm goin' solo!" and you can hear her, just a few beats off the rest of the voices yell-twanging. "...tahMAHrow! Bet your bottum dollllllurrrrrr...." I will suck my dick on this point: No one ran a more fun, crazier, happier recording room than I did. And THAT'S why I coaxed such stunning performances out of even the greenest actors. What actors do is so horrifyingly open and vulnerable to me, I am in awe of their bravery. Sometimes you don't need to do anything to bring out their innate greatness than just be kind, supportive, and whisper chase away their almost overwhelming insecurity. Tell 'em the truth. "You got this. Easy. You're gonna be amazing. I'm a brilliant caster and I put you in this part. If you don't think you know what you're doing, rest assured, I know what I'M doing. All you have to be is you and all you have to do is what you were born to do. And if it's not perfect, who gives a fuck? This isn't life. This is actually one place where we have some actual CONTROL. Here, you always get another take."

So since the company probably thought most people would play that game with Japanese audio, he got is immediate family to do the dub. It is fantastabad. So fantastically bad it's amazing. This dub really is hilarious. I actually got the DVD set after seeing clips. But there was actually a hentai where they went nuts on the dub as well, it was called "A Time to Screw." All the dialog was pulled KZbin acceptable moments too. Like a woman shouting, "Look at all the pain and suffering you caused! And for what?! You don't even have season tickets to the Yomiuri Giants!" Or a great little exchange. Guy: Have a yogurt milkshake. Girl: Is this non-fat Guy: Nothing is non-fat. That's why the Earth is going to explode one day. Girl: (long pause) Non-fat? Exploding world? WTF? Or what I think was a closing monolog, "And then there is the matter of time. Einstein and Oppenheimer, the theory of relatively, and the conundrum of big balls in your face. But in the end it's a line, like one long turd coiling it's way through the universe. And like a turd, the smell was not to be forgotten."
