The ABC model of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) explains why you think the things you think, why you feel the way you feel, and why you do the things you do. When we learn to use the ABC model, we can begin to intervene and take control of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
CBT is an approach to psychotherapy where an individual learns to recognize their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and how they all relate to one another. The ABC model is at the core of the CBT theory.
This video gives an overview of how to use the ABC model while providing examples.

Utilizing the ABC model helps people with anxiety well, I find. I'm a CBT practitioner and often their triggers send them reeling. Helping them draw the connection between beliefs, actions, and consequences helps them create an action plan when confronted with a trigger versus going over the ledge.

Thanks Woody. I'm an Outreach Worker and love Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I'm also going to school right now, taking the Counselling Program at VCC, (Vancouver Community College). I'm doing a presentation on CBT on Wednesday night in class and I'm really nervous. I watched your video on KZbin and I love the super simple ABC model of explaining CBT. I found some really good handouts and worksheets on-line, and I think that those and using your grocery store example to explain CBT will get me through. Great job. :)

Good model. Effective is how after the event, it starts with a person's core beliefs, here-and-now thoughts (then feelings & behavior.) Positive thought is powerful. "The reality of man is his thought, not his material body. The thought force and the animal force are partners." ~ Baha'i Faith

If I am not mistaken, the ABC model is taken from Albert Ellis om Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Where CBT talks about how our behavior affects our thoughts and how we feel, or how our how we feel can affect how we behave and our thoughts, and how our thoughts can affect how we feel and behave. REBT from Albert Ellis gets confused with Arron Beck and visa versa in terms of theories and interventions. Both were develope around the same time, but Ellis and Beck were unaware of each others cognitive behavioral therapy. But do not take my word for it, look it up. Just food for thought, plus I wanted to mention it because this mistake of confusion is very common.

I understand this a quick video that explains the ABC but what if we ask the question "Do I have evidence for that" and you conclude that you do? Do you, therefore, think of that negative thought differently or how do you approach that? The question to self is a good start but elaborate if you could with the same example in the video but one step further?
@joe_7726
@joe_7726 4 жыл бұрын
You'd ask, "what evidence is there against this?" Is it a fact or just my opinion, or someone else's opinion, or just the way I'm thinking about it, or how do I know it'll always be this way?" Basically, question the evidence and don't take every thought you have as a truth.

I often come into the [issue] of "good times"...somehow not just coming in contact w/quantity of people, but in conflict with the existential dilemma of mercy for some1 who acts different...I know it could as usual just be bio. chem., yet I still prefer a slower more broad explanation.

Wouldn't "belief" simply be caused by your self-conscious and ideology of standards? Sometimes the things we think or say is just a construct of the context of the given situation.

Like: a person invalidating a belief just because we answer from our viewpoint...or viewpoints...they think because we might have started the conversation they know every fact and detail but they don't.

You recommend meditation but i notice there are a lot of Meditations and a lot of these are linked with eastern Religions. It is a bit too open ended to just say meditate, don’t you think? Why not say 1. Pray for that person’s good fortune or 2. Do something good for someone else in response to your negative feelings. Do you consider that helping others help us?
