It's the copper wire from the light switch going to the lights. When they turn off the lights that wire ends up acting as an antenna. They need to replace the light switch and bolt it down well. Could also try ferrite-cores placed on the wire to break up the signal.
@dropexpectations124 жыл бұрын
But would that explain how they hear it?
@mikethompson27454 жыл бұрын
@@dropexpectations12 the box for the light switch is likely acting as a speaker due to the vibrations coming from the wires, basically.
@mikethompson27454 жыл бұрын
@Jim K First off, no kidding... Second off, the positive and ground could be crossed or shorted in the switch box going to the light, my house had a switch shorted like this. The grounding or neutral could be ok and this still happens. Third, ferrite cores could do something with enough of them spread out to break up the signal. There are documented cases where the copper wires in a house pick up radio waves. Even a light bulb that runs on them (tho by accident). Have you never made a radio? It doesn't take much. If there is a short in the switch the 'sparks' could cause enough vibration to shake the walls of the switch box or something connected. It's not very loud, and 15ft of wire can easily generate enough energy. Loop, like I said, the switch box could be shorted.
@mikethompson27454 жыл бұрын
@Jim K dude, wire is wire. Any wire can pick up radio waves, some are just better at it. And speaker wire is just smaller gauge than house wiring. With a small short, when On, the normal current flows because less resistance. When switched off the short flows because of less resistance. I had a switch shorted like this at home. It did affect things, but barely noticable. It doesnt need a transmitter, the long wires act as a receiver. Antenna are just basically long wires. Radio waves are electromagnetic fields. AM is analog, meaning it's basically straight sound waves converted to radio, meaning it turns back to sound without any extra circuitry. It wouldnt trip the breaker because the circuit is open... ie, with the switch off no current flows through the breaker, as the current created via the antenna was generated after where the switch disconnects the circuit. As for the ferrite cores, not sure what your asking exactly. But yes, they could protect the wires from picking up the signal in the first place. Or break it up enough to be white noise.
@mikethompson27454 жыл бұрын
@Jim K what's wrong with you? Copper wire is copper wire. Be it speaker wire, house wiring, or USB wires... it's all the same except for the gauge and possibly twisted or solid. Regardless it all functions almost the same... except core wire is known to generate and pick up EM easier. It's why they use twisted wires, to decrease EM interference. House wiring is often solid core. The challenge you have is assuming the short is in one specific place. The short could be elsewhere in the switch box/'circuit'. Think somewhere between a spark gap radio and a crystal radio. Clearly the ossilation is the challenge, I'm assuming something is acting as one. Like something caught in the box, materials in the wall. The spark could generate sound, or just effect something to generate sound. On the insaner off chance, it's a malfunctioning bug left behind by the feds. 😋

They are right that this is not an uncommon occurrence. At this very moment I live under an FM radio tower in Loves Park, Illinois (WQFL-FM, where I used to do the morning show) and when we first moved in to our house we could hear the station bleeding into just about every FM frequency that wasn’t already being used by another station. Also, when I worked at KCNW-AM in Kansas City, Missouri back in the 90s, we received very angry letters and phone calls about how our signal was seeping into the neighbors' phone lines. Hopefully for this Chicago family this has been fixed by now, but I do wonder, though, if having your house itself recite scripture and constantly speak about Christ might ward off any potential demonic infestations! LOL!

Something is acting like a diode and rectifying the AM signal from the station, is all. A bad electrical connection can do that if there is oxide on the connection. Aluminum wiring is likely worse for that. Just tighten all the connections and make sure there are no ground loops. People have even picked up AM stations with their teeth fillings.

Note that WYLL uses a different set of towers at night than daytime, and the two sets of towers are 30 miles apart, with different signal coverage. RMS power measured at 1 kilometer from that nighttime tower set is a respectable 1V/m. Corroded metal makes for a fine diode detector, especially when the signal is exceptionally strong. Call in an Amateur Radio operator (a highly motivated nerd :^) have him or her take measurements of signal strength at 1160 kHz at the house. A small parabolic mic might just be able to zero in on exactly what joint has become a large crystal radio. Fascinating stuff, unless of course you have to lose sleep because of it. We had a local AM transmitter in this area that could be heard, on occasion, over the telephone, and on the hifi speakers when the hifi was turned off. They were a bit over-the-limit.

My aunt & uncle, plus cousin lived in an old cabin-type house back in the 80s and from the day they moved in, they heard church-type music, whispering, singing, screaming at times and other assortments of weirdness. My uncle was in law enforcement, so he was a huge skeptic, but after a while, even he was convinced there was something strange going on in that place. They did a search of the house to see if they could find radios, or any other sort of weird electrical components that could've caused it, but to no avail. I remember I went to go stay with them for a week in the summer and I kept praying that I wouldn't hear anything, and I was lucky that I didn't. My parents stayed there too while they were visiting and my mother heard someone get up, go upstairs to the bathroom, which was right next to the room they were staying in, and heard somone bathing, filling up a cup in the tub and then splashing themselves with it. The next morning, my mom asked who was bathing in their bathroom in the middle of the night, but nobody had. It was just one of those unexplained events!

This happened to me on Manzanita coast for a station in Tillamook. I called and told them off. Accused them of talking wild hyperactive crazed crap and obnoxious music all night. I moved to another room and it was the same but only at night and that station didn't come in at all, nor did I own a radio or T.V. Gave me a terrible insomnia all summer. I know for a fact there's a spring under that home and I was sleeping on the concrete basement. A huge cave with a spring in it too.
