There are many witnesses for the abuse (beating tonya with a hairbrush, shoving her down the stairs, slapping her off a Chair, denying her bathroom breaks while practicing (resulting in embarrassing public "accidents" on the ice) constantly yelling at her and putting her down). Her mother wasn't just a "momager" but an abuser. And this isn't About excuses, but About explanations anyway. But in my opinion there are TWO victims in this whole Story. Nancy, of Course, but also Tonya. Not everything is black and White.

I love that Margot Robbie sees right through her hardened exterior and knows she was just trying to protect herself from her mom, and others. She sees that she's an abused child. There are two Videos here on YT (the "60 minutes"-Interview and the interview with LaVona and Connie Chung) where you can watch the whole phone call Scene and what she tells About it afterwards and in the end you hear in her voice that she might cry any Moment. The Problem for those abused Children who get tough as a Survival strategy is that many People only see the tough side and don't believe them that they are abused because they are not the "perfect (sweet timid) victim". I wouldn't trust anything she wants you to believe even a fabricated story she made while she was in college even though the film shows that she's not even old enough to graduate. If she really had been the mastermind behind the attack, they would have charged her for that, not only for hindering the investigations afterwards. Also she certainly didn't get away with a slap on the wrist. Maybe she didn't actually serve jail time, but being banned for life from competitional Skating and Coaching must have felt like a life sentence to Tonya. Don't get me wrong, the attack on Nancy Kerrigan should never have happened. But that ife-long ban was totally uncalled for. And Tonya's mother WAS terrible. There are witnesses for the abuse. (This is not About excuses, but About explanations, e.g.about how Tonya could have fallen for a creep like Jeff Gillooly who was the first guy and probably the first Person who called her pretty. Obviously nobody before him has called her pretty, which I think is terribly sad. Because she was.)

Kawaii Kiwi facts are, there’s never been any definitive proof that tonya was in on the attack. At least not enough to prosecute her with the same charges her husband got. She knew something was going on and might have so far as to know what was going to happen. But she wasn’t in on it or part of it. I think it didn’t really occur to her that it would be anything too serious Her not coming forward to report her suspicion was definitely wrong but I personally don’t think the punishment fit the crime. Especially since Nancy herself went back to skating fine enough while Tonya was banned completely. And for people to judge her so harshly was completely disproportionate to the crime. It’s like she says in an interview, America wants someone to love but they also want someone to hate. It didn’t help that the media was milking the heck out off the story. Painting Tonya as culpable to what happened to “innocent darling Nancy”. Even now, documentaries will still milk the heck out off the story but I’d take them all with a grain of salt. They all start the story already with the conclusion they want you to have in mind and the facts they give you will lean towards it. Whether it’s fair or not

I was a skater from 1986 to 1998, and my Mom and Dad were my biggest supporters. No matter how many times I fell, how many competitions I lost (and there were many), they were my soft place to land. They gave up their free time (and spare cash) for 13 years, and were still proud of me when I failed. I wish Tonya would’ve had that kind of support. She was and still is, an incredible skater 🌸.

She was actually much cuter with the short feathered hair than when they tried to “fix” her and gave her a French braid with big bangs. With the short hair she was every American 80s teenager, with the French braid she was a girl trying to hard too fit in. She didn’t need “fixing” she needed acceptance. She was failed by her coaches in that aspect. Had her coach just worked on her performance by highlighting her athletics and helped her to be more fluid I think the country still would have embraced her. Maybe not the judges but Ice skating judges are notorious for having favorites and I doubt during this time she had much of a chance at winning them over with a makeover.

I had both styles as a teenager in the 80s 😉 some people at that time in history didn’t like women with short hairstyles. It wasn’t as acceptable as long hair. If all three skaters skated their best. It might have been close between Tonya and Oksana. Nancy would've come in third. Oksana was an amazing artistic skater. If Tonya skated her best she was an amazing power house. Nancy was great but just not as exciting in the ways Oksana and Tonya were. Cant go back. Am glad that Tonya has a chance at a loving family now.

Tonya in a way has the same bold & strong character as her mother....Maybe her mother did the best she could in the not so best way. The abuse she says she lived through is very unfortunate. But like my mother has said-forgive me if I ever hurt you while trying to raise you right. It all depends where the intentions are coming from as well. There are parents who beat and abuse their children because they honestly don’t care about them. Regardless it calls for big healing and forgiveness.

15 year old Tonya admitting what all real dancers know: one jump doesnt make the whole thing. The rest of her life, her pride, the press and her stans have insisted one jump (that she only made after yet another judge let her try again after blaming her screw up on a wardrobe malfunction) made her whole career. One jump gives you points, but it does not complete a routine. She needed the whole package to back it up. 1 jump is a circus act. She cheated herself in thinking that being able to do tricks made up for the lack of training.

She didn't have to do anything to have been beaten. Anything can make an abuser go off. Period. No need to blame the person being abused.
