I also think that even if kratos acknowledges the fact that he is death itself he wouldn't know how to control this death aspect of his, unlike thanatos he is a man made God and now a primordial(sort of). He is an entity that is beyond the "normal" lower realms. And I'm pretty sure that he is some how connected to the higher plain in more than one way and I'm pretty sure he is more than just a pawn in that game of demiurge. From what I remember hearing, it isn't your average curse and it isn't as simple as he can't let himself die. Even erasure may not work due to how the curse works. Last I heard, Kratos isn't just cursed to never die. He is fated to. Meaning even if he does die, somehow, he will be brought back, whether by a third party or by himself. Erasure would be counteracted by a third party, so on and so forth.

All beings in nature cannot be truly immortal, all gods have to have one or more permanent ways to kill them. In Kratos case he has true immortality, but in the sense that he still has to be able to killed/die, so nature's balance can be maintained, then he comes backs. That's nature's loophole.

I think at the time of God of War 4, Chaos, who Kratos is aware of by name and has witnessed their power firsthand. Is keeping Kratos going. He brings a out change where ever he goes, which creates chaos. So who better would ensure his continued immortality then Chaos itself. A foreign god throwing the 9 realms into mayhem and kickstarting Ragnarok, now that's chaos on itself.

Actually you missed one more thing. He is the god of Hope. There will always be hope in mankind which is why its the most powerful power a god could have. He initially refused his godhood, this was the reason why he was weakened but still a god, still immortal. and he's also unconditionally immortal FROM this instance. People, regardless of their race, their origin, their attitude towards life will have hope. He can best other gods because they "hope" for something better. Indirectly they power Kratos further. And his ashes are fading away because of 2 things, he isn't being remembered as the ghost of sparta because of his white skin and the terrible deeds that entails he's being remembered for his actions AFTER. He defeated gods, titans, and monsters to a point that the people who originally hated him became to respect him. His family directly has forgiven him for his deeds and even in god of war chains of olympus his daughter still wanted to be at his side.

During the Greece era, the purposes of Kratos were: to forgive his family's murder and make god pay for their lies. I'm pretty sure Kratos' curse came from Athena. The seer/oracle at the village where he murdered his family, cursed him to wear the ashes on his skin to remind him and others of what he did. However, it was Athena who cursed Kratos to not be allowed to kill himself or give up his life, forcing him to live with the pain of killing his family. I think it was at the end of the first God of War (correct me if I'm wrong), Kratos attempted suicide by jumping off a cliff, but Athena raised him back up to the cliff and told him he couldn't be killed by his own hand. So long story short, Kratos cannot kill himself or allow himself to be killed but CAN still be killed if he is bested in battle, as shown by Thor killing him in God of War Ragnarok. He wasn't allowing Thor to kill him because Kratos thought he needed to protect Atreus, which is why Thor could kill him before resurrecting him. I know im two months late but yes. Finally someone who gets the point of his curse. Athena, village oracle and Persephone cursed him. And now it all goes to circles. He can be killed but has point for living (Atreus) . Long story short,his curse brings him back to life every time being will for living because of atreus or something else. There is always something that brings him back. It’s a curse not a gift most of this is correct because kratos tried to kill himself after zues but the curse prevented him. He the wondered Egypt trying all forms to kill himself. Kratos I can tell from his blades of chaos as he took on the aspect of other gods through fighting. Kratos holds in him hope and the primordial flame in his blades, he was cursed to live forever, but I think that the two aspects he holds, one related to the beginning of creation and the other constantly being the answer to “what can we do if we lose it all” connects to in essence rebirth, he is destined to never stay dead to return again and again as someone stronger than they were before in some way

It began when his brother Deimos was taken. Kratos did the red marks on his body that reminded of his brothers birth mark. It was there the story of God of War was made. His brother was taken away, Kratos became the ghost of Sparta. With his anger and revenge on whom that took his brother he did go berserk. On his way he met almost all gods of Greece mythos, and it was on that way he gained immortality. Yeah, ofc they went into norse mythos also. After that guess egyptian mythos and even sumerian mythos are at line. I dunno. But hey, that doesn't goes according to the timeline. So the game where he fights egyptian god's, count me out. It would be more interesting if Kratos was borned in egyptian mythos and worked his way up. But Kratos sounds more greece in it's name. Some folks from santa monica hav actually already explained why Kratos ages. Essentially, he's still not in his physical prime yet and thus he will age until he reaches it and then stop ageing. This is why Zeus was was so young in the Titan War but once he grew his complete beard and long hair, he never aged even a bit. I assume the same will happen to Kratos and he will get more swole as time goes on and eventually get a completely white beard which will officially put him in his physical prime, after which he will not age (It wld be very fucking cool to see a kratos with a completely white beard and a physique similar to the doom slayer's). I got this info from an old reddit post on the god of war subreddit, the OP of the post had dms with one of the devs of god of war who answered their questions. Idt the devs mentioned that the greek gods needed nectar or ambrosia or some magical food to stay immortal, I think its more along the lines of just magic and divine genes or something that makes gods who they are, just cuz of their species and lineage they have these powers. I think its kinda like how mutants in marvel have their powers through genes and stuff and they are just born with them, no reliance on some sort of food. The whole immortality due to worship thing is complete BS. The game basically says that Kratos has no worshippers as Odin states it himself when talking to Kratos. In fact, the big reveal at the end of Ragnarok where he sees the Mural of people worshipping him is a big turning moment for him as he's never had that before. I see where you are coming from, but it is very possible that when Kratos left Greece, that Greek people started to worship him. Odin mocks Kratos by asking him if he has ever been worshipped, but he might not know for sure. For all we know, the Greeks might be worshipping Kratos after he freed them from the Greek gods who abandoned them. We hear them in God of War 3 scream that exact phrase a few times, “the gods have abandoned us!” From the perspectives of the Greeks, they might believe that the Greek gods abandoned them by flooding the land, spreading disease, releasing the souls of the underworld, etc. and Kratos the once man, but now turned god, released the power of hope to the mortal to save them from the harsh rule of the gods, and so that they may survive and thrive without their help.

Kratos' immortality is confirmed to come from the same curse as the ashes. The ashes fading does not mean the curse is yet broken. The "nectar" is called ambrosia, and the gods' golden blood is known as ichor.

@abdbay One of the old devs was asked about it a long time ago during an impromptu Q&A. At the time, the plan was for the ashes and their curse to serve as a kind of Mark of Cain, if you will. Making Kratos both unkillable and a pariah. This of course also included being unable to take his own life. If you also want a source for ambrosia/ichor, that would simply be Greek mythology itself.

The only way for Kratos to die is when he is ready to truly die. It is unlikely anything as the power to kill Kratos especially when he is unwilling to die however, when he feels ready to die, it is likely more or less that that will be the only moment for his death. When he lays down his weapon voluntarily and willingly excepts death not out of sorrow or rage, but out of the sense that he feels that it is time. Of course, the blades of exile would have to be destroyed as well to completely break Kratos’s alternate source of immortality that could anchor his soul to the model plane in theory, since they are a form of curse that used to find Kratos to the service of Aries.

Kratos was bored human unlike his brother but became a god so he can’t die cause he change his fate then he tried to kill himself with the blade of Olympus. The. While the god of war he had followers and then lost his god hood then got that back. Since he defeated all the gods he was bought to the upper plan of godly hood and the rage he had from the blades he wasn’t allowed to die just like it was said in the the las game he hold the primal fire in his blades. He is a monster that does except who he is cause he killed his family. There are actually two curses keeping Kratos immortal. There is of course, the one the oracle placed on him with his ashes, but there is also the one on Zeus' bloodline where they *will* be killed by their sons (curse/prophecy). So Cronos was "killed" and sent to Tartarus by Zeus, Zeus was killed by Kratos, and in God of War [Norse] Kratos finds that one prophecy that Atreus will kill someday kill Kratos. So until the day comes that the ashes all fall away (which is happening according to Cory Barlog), and Atreus in there with him - Kratos is unconditionally immortal (Because prophecies always come true in this series - albeit not always how you think)

I like this theory but I also think its flawed, because Kratos was already a God because he was the son of Zeus, and he did have worshippers in a way via his Spartan army. His God hood didn't kick in yet because he didn't believe he was a god, but he still would've had conditional immortality similar to Hera. Then when he killed Ares the Gods essentially gave him a double dose of godhood, potentially making him stronger than him. but I believe the real reason he's unconstitutionally immortal is because he has to be, "death is a natural part of life" is what Faye tools him well what did Kratos do in the Greek era before most if his deaths happened? He killed Thanatos a god of death a "natural part of life" so what my idea is, is that Kratos's immortality isn't really a curse but rather the embodiment of life and death, that attached itself to him after he killed Thanatos, so because he is what he is nature and the higher plane can't have him die permanently so they always make sure he comes back to keep the cycle going.

Kratos is immortal because of Gaia’s curse. It’s mentioned in original GOW1 novel, if a god kills another god who is their kin they will be cursed to live forever. He also has the power of hope still inside him, as confirmed by Tyr. If hope exists he will come back to life.

his curse of walking the earth forever is the same curse that binds his family's ashes to his skin. It's not like the old woman decided "you've been bad, I'm going to make you white as a ghost." nah his curse is that he has to wander the earth for eternity, suffering for what he did to his family with their ashes bound to his skin. Even Athena wouldn't remove it. I know this because not only have the ashes faded a little bit but he's visibly grown older. My guess is the curse is slowly fading as he grows more redeemable. You can tell in the newer god of wars that he's not the same Kratos he was when he was younger. When he was younger, his path was his choice but in the new ones it was the Norse Gods making bad choices.
