Hell: An infinite punishment for a finite transgression. How could that ever have been considered moral?

Can a single minor sin be worth an infinite punishment? I mean, suppose a man disobeys a "keep off the grass" sign. Does your sense of justice demand he be set on fire and burn for the next trillion years? If you can say yes to that, I submit that it says more about your character than it does about justice.

bulldogsbob Ah, sin. The arbitrary, nonsense rules with which God so generously gave to us in the first place. Picking up sticks on the Sabbath... Surely a quality reason to be put to death. At least that poor fool won't roast in hell for the sin of picking up sticks! He has to wait a couple thousand years until gentle Jesus arrives to implement the punishment of hell.

@@chris-nj3vg Very consistently: just one of many examples of the inconsistency around what hell is: Matthew 8:10-12 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. So, you believe that the bible consistently doesn't teach what it says here. Next you'll be telling us it consistently doesn't say that Jesus was born before and after 1AD and that it doesn't say Jesus died both before and after easter.

The thing i hate the most is the brain washing of children. It is the brainwashing of adults to believe in ideas like life emerging on our planet from an assumed act of Abiogenesis that gets me-especially when science has never to date even once observed a single act of Abiogenesis. Without such an observation, I am left to wonder what factual basis an Atheist can employ to explain why life exists on this planet. On the other hand, science does observe billions upon billions upon billions of acts of Biogenesis (life gives rise to life) occuring on our planet. Every day we observe more examples of Biogenesis across numerous species. Of course, that is exactly the sort of thing we would expect to see if a living God gave rise to life on our planet: the kind of act of Biogenesis explained in the Bible. But, what are billions of supporting examples of that idea when Atheists have 0 acts of observed Abiogenesis to hang their hat on to compare against?

@Goroei Noble Nah, people go to hell for their wrong-doing, not because they've not heard about Jesus. Everyone has God's moral law imprinted on them, no one has an excuse. God will judge those people according to what they do know, not by what they dont know.
@makse10
@makse10 5 жыл бұрын
We as humans, now judge God. God stands before the council of mankind. He has many things to answer for. Genocide; destruction on a cataclysmic scale; punishing people with infinite torture for finite, non-crimes; bringing nearly incalculable suffering... The problem is we can't track down this celestial criminal. All we've found is some notebook, supposedly written by his adherents, some delusional people, and a few landmarks that take us nowhere. If you have any information regarding this outlaw, please send it to your local Makse department. Along with this notice, keep a watchful eye out for what are called "Apologists". We're not sure what their intention is by doing so, but notice that they call themselves Apologists. What are they apologizing for? We'll keep you updated in our search.
@scubaguy1989
@scubaguy1989 5 жыл бұрын
@@makse10 That's hilarious, your standard for judging morality is God himself. Your morality comes from God. I think if you stood before your maker you would see how ridiculous your attempts to judge him are. That said - Judgment, if God wants to judge you and others for horrific crimes then he is entitled. He's the boss not you, your morality against his pales into insignicance. You just think your sins are no big deal because you judge yourself against the wrong standard. God aint gonna appear to you and argue his case. In his infinite wisdom he uses other ways to reveal himself to humans, many ways, but not the ways you might want. Tough, God is the boss not you. He has given you more than enough to reveal himself to you. If you prefer wilful blindness and suppression of the truth, dulling yourself to that voice on the inside and the many other ways God speaks, well that's on you. "The fool says in his heart there is no God." Atheists only exist this side of the grave. If they stay that way they wake up in a nightmare that never ends. They dont have to, but they dont want to follow the way of the master of the universe, so deserve what comes next (which is in any case not what God, or any apologist, wants for them). Apologists do what they do to save your skin, not because they love the anal shallow criticisms that so many atheists fire at them.

The depression that comes with knowing I feel 100% shitty now, and this is the best I'll almost certainly feel for the rest of my life. Yeah, I've wanted the pain to end. Atheism saved my life. Theists will argue that if there is no afterlife than what is the point of living a happy life, which is about the dumbest reasoning I have ever heard. Why would someone with one chance at life not want to make the best of it. For those theists who believe in an afterlife, they can be the biggest dicks in the world but as long as they repent before death all is forgiven and they go to heaven. Seems like a get out of jail free card to me.

Adam N I think theist would argue that without an afterlife/God life at an intellectual level becomes meaningless, not necessarily at an emotional level. Given that there is only one chance at life the most logical way to live is that of selfishness and pleasurability, not doing things for other people that will ultimately end up having no purpose or meaning.

Atheist On Demand *Saying "Jim does not believe there is a god" says what is not real about Jim and doesn't make Jim anything* What the fuck does this even mean? You seem to be one of those types of persons that either pretends to be or seriously believes that he is really deep and shit, but really isn't. Matt's "grasp of atheism" is, and to my knowledge, has always been the lack of belief in the existence of God or gods. That's what atheism is. If Matt helped Bong Manding with finding a reality that doesn't include gods that works for him, then good for Matt and Bong.

Child Boo It means it says nothing about X to say X does not do or does not have something. Saying X lacks Y, doesn't refer to X at all and obviously Dillahunty thinks it does. With threats of punishment there is an inverse proportionality between the severity of the punishment and the likelihood of it happening. In orther words, the _less likely_ a punishment is, the more severe it needs to be, and vice versa. So, since Hell is the most severe punishment imaginable, it's also the least likely to even exist.

Yeah, the one I put nice and close to the clearing where you will "sleep" (explains what sleep is. Takes about 5 minutes cuz Adam has zero knowledge). Okay, now I am...well the guy who was here when you woke up for the first time. I created you (then has to explain what created means.) The only things you can know are what I installed in your OS...and what I tell you. So that tree over there. No, Adam. Focus. Yes, that's a platypus. Yes, it doesn't look anything like the elephant, does it? Okay now where was I? Oh yeah. You don't know right from wrong. You won't ever know right from wrong...unless you eat one of the red things on that tree over there. But don't do that, cuz that would be wrong. No, I can't explain wrong to you. That would kinda spoil the elaborate setup that is My Perfect Plan and therefore cannot fail...

That is a silly statement .... why do you think God should override every persons free will and make it perfect for all, all the time. What that would entail is a planet of robots. God ain’t gonna do it. God will fix every injustice in his own time. In Jesus he became human and stepped into suffering ... he shared in human pain ... he didn’t distance himself from it. God is not at anyone’s beck and call to give them a five star existence. The bible says to expect hard times in life .... God promised no one a bother free life on this planet. But his retirement plan is awesome. Reject it if you want .... your choice

Great presentation. I was raised Catholic and was drifting towards atheism at about 12 but at age 14 hit a low point in my life and in our religion class got introduced to this evangelical teacher. I did the Jesus thing because I had hit rock bottom and also because of fear of hell. I didn’t leave the faith until two years ago although I wanted to years before. Preachers would mention not only the threat of hell for apostasy but that one would be seven times worse than they were before. Well I’m not worse but better. I wish I followed my gut and given up the faith when I first had the thought about it. But as they say better late than never.

When I was a Christian I didn't fear just hell, but heaven too. The thought of living forever terrified me. Even my old beliefs the thought used to produce fear to the core, knowing there's nothing I can do to escape eternity. I used to cry, pacing around horrified even knowing I was going to heaven. Now there's no evidence for my old belief, and am so glad.

You mentioned how there were some people who would rededicate their lives to Christ every week. I would see the same thing when I was in ministry. There are actually some Pentecostal denominations where people believe they may have lost their salvation during the week, so every Sunday they will go forward during the altar call to get re-saved and then the pastor will take them into the baptistry to be re-baptized because they believe baptism is essential to their salvation. It's crazy!

If religion would disappear today. Every one would have to start thinking for their selves. We would have to except that we are accountable for one another as well as our selves and not to some invisible nobody. All the energy that goes into lying to your selves and others to propagate a crowed to feel safe in could then be diverted to solving real world problems with real world solutions. If we attach ignorance our children would become wiser our cultures could evolve. When every one is on the same page what could we do? Could we find a utopia together without devision? Could we conqueror greed and vanity? Would woman quit hanging the toilet paper on backwards? We may some day find out if greed, vanity and the corruption they bring will end but only if we work together and realize our accountably to one another and not to an imaginary being. Keep up the good work Matt Dillahunty. The Jews don't believe in hell not for the same reasons. Neither should we. Hell is a woman trying to survive her father selling her into sex slavery?marriage. Hell is hear among us if anywhere and we are the ones who make it. We are the creator of our own delusions.

The reason I had so much anxiety and depression since I was 14 is because I was told that I'm going straight to hell by family members, the high school principal , the history teacher, the football coach , and many students . They told me at a very young age that because I listen to "satan worship music " I myself am a satanist and a evil person just because I loved metal music, had long hair, and wore White Zombie, Pantera, and Sepultura shirts. I was just a kid trying to find some identity and was socially ostracized for it. Growing up in the bible belt in a small town being called a Satanist did terrible tricks to my mind. I'm no longer afraid of going to hell but it took a long time to find some peace and serenity. Now the only hell I'm afraid of is letting other people's judgment of me infect my mind to the point where I think they are right. I no longer get offended or scared by evangelical fundamentalists Christians . I feel sorry for them.

In Genesis 3:19 God states the fate of man rather definitively. Additionally, in Deuteronomy 4:2 God directed that man is not to change, add to or detract from his word. Yet, the New Testament, in its entirety, stands in violation of Deut. 4:2. Additionally, throughout the Old Testament, we have God dealing personally with the Jews. The latter could never do anything right for extended periods. In response, God urged, coerced, threatened and punished them over and over and over again. Yet, He never told them or threatened them with hell and eternal damnation or promised them eternal heaven. Never. It is in the New Testament that we get this entire refutation and overhaul of Genesis 3:19. In so many ways, the New Testament calls God a bumbling and deceitful liar, who was, in effect, rebelled against, overcame and replaced by Jesus. Did God retire with a fat IRA and 401K? If the truth matters, then let it be told.

I think the telling part is that the "afterlife" is usually defined by most Xtians as being the soul or spiritual existance outside and apart from the physical body. Yet, the entire concepts of heaven and hell are based on having a physical presence. Pain is a physical response. What pleasures exist in heaven that are not connected to having a body? That's the problem, we can't see ourselves without our bodies because it is integral to what we are. A spiritual existence is impossible to envision without injecting a physical body. Think about it. What is it like right after death? Are you just a floating point of view? No, you will imagine being somewhere. It just shows how implausible it all is.

Hell and heaven are concepts that can differ from person to person. If I were to burn in hell with the sight of seeing pedophiles, rapist, murders, and bastards who have done horrible things suffer for eternity. I would gladly accept hell and endure all the pain to see that. However, if those same people where to “ask for forgiveness” and go to heaven, then that would be a hell for me knowing how monsters like that were forgiven and rewarded just because they believed rather than an atheist who did more for the people and was good in nature. But he or she was dammed to hell for not believing. If God is real he doesn’t care if you are a good or bad person, he just want to be praised and adored for eternity. A very non loving, jealous, short tempered, egocentric entity that represents humanity’s darkest colors and desires.

@Mike JJJ well you are right in that aspect, just the morals I’ve grew up with makes me feel that type of way. I do agree that people shouldn’t try to become better just to have a reward (heaven). And I do also agree that not everyone is truly evil or good, however I’m a human being with emotions and my morals and judgment I have Can different from yours or anyone in particular. That’s what I mean by that the concept of a heaven, it’s a redundant thought. Everyone has their own version of what a paradise or hell could be for them. I’m not religious, used to be, became agnostic as I kept searching for questions religion couldn’t answer and later an became an atheist. But according to a lot of religions, Christianity for example, by asking for forgiveness and accepting Jesus and the lord then you’ll be welcomed into their kingdom. Which I utterly think it’s the most bullshit thing ever, in that case what’s the point of doing anything whatsoever. Anyways, Lately I’ve been reading and seeing lots nihilistic points about life and have change the way I see the world in general. Nothing really matters in the great scheme of things. We are all Insignificant and the only thing that’s guarantee is death. Who knows, there could be a god, we could all be a simulation, or maybe just a thought. In the end nothing really matters so why bother, right? I’m young and still enjoy doing most of my activities tbh, but it’s not the same, every day I question my existence knowing it could end in a blink, time is an illusion that seems to only affect living matter. It’s a lot to take in but the curiosity and mystery of these topics really does make me wanna know more.

That is a great idea to teach empathy and forward thinking. The problem is that I have met so many adults that have no empathy and forward thinking and at this point the only things they still respond to are the carrot and the stick. I had coworkers that would harass each other into tears, stress and trauma. The only things that stopped them is the fear of losing their job, and even then sometimes they could not help but feed into that destructive tendancy. Yet reply to them with are you going to ask for repentance for what you just said in church? Would you be willing to tell your pastor what you just said to that person? Then all of a sudden they would clam up and get back to work.

I feel that teaching the theology of hell to children and then telling them that by believing in a story and following the rules of an ancient book will prevent you from going to this place is abusive. When I hear of how people who have left Christianity are still being plagued by fears of a hell that was indoctrinated into them by their parents/church - or people who seemingly have learned enough to question the shaky stories they've been told who are scared to admit they are no longer convinced because they were indoctrinated into a fear of hell - I feel really fortunate not to have been indoctrinated in this manner by my parents. This is something I should have thanked my parents for before they died. Since it's too late now, my thanks to them is in not indoctrinating my own children with such tales. I have a niece with whom I do not associate very often - as few times as I can manage, given we're a fairly close family - because she tried to indoctrinate my children with horror stories of the _hell they'll burn in_ if they don't believe her favourite fairy stories. She tried to claim, when I took her to task on it, that she was "only telling them the truth" - at which point I metaphorically tore her a new arsehole. I still love her deeply, but I've lost all respect for her and I think her behaviour is appalling. Given she's the same niece who, as a child, was deeply distraught (to the point of nightmares at night and tears by day) because she *believed* she was going to heaven and so many of the _people she loved_ (her grandmother and grandfather, her uncles and aunt and cousins) were going to *burn in hell* because that's the shit she was fed by her father and his pastor, I cannot conceive how she can subsequently try to inflict the same distress and horror on *my* children. Well, _anyone's_ children, for that matter. That's a sign of how fundamentally broken some believers' minds are. They can be raised in fear and distress and then happily pass that fear and distress on to others in turn - anyone else getting vibes from a certain ancient story about a fox losing her tail in a trap and trying to convince other foxes that tails were unfashionable? Aesop was right, _misery_ does indeed crave company.

You forget that there were no gods before men created them. So, it's all men's minds that are self destuctive. I cleansed out the last bit of evil by the clear evidence that religions are man made. Just look at the fact that every isolated culture had their own god or gods. How obvious is that? I have no idea what percentage of atheists simply got lucky, like us. I'd be very curious to know. My mom took us to church every week, but although never admitted it, had an extermely weak faith. Possibly, just residual brainwashing.

@@tonedeafduck4859 I never forget that there were no gods before people created them - I was fortunate in that my mum pointed out when I was young that all religions are man-made and how they progressed from anthropomorphising the sun, moon, forces of nature to full on polytheism and eventually monotheism. In the case of the Bible, Christian scholars deliberately mistranslated the *plural* _Elohim_ as singular "God" to hide the fact that the creation myth _as written_ was polytheistic and they like to gloss over the fact that a large chunk of the later Old Testament is clearly when the Children of Israel were going through their henotheistic stage - the belief that other gods were equally "real" but _their_ god was "Da Man". The OT is Judaic polytheistic and henotheistic man-made legends, hastily papered over with Christian monotheism.

Wolf - I was just noting how it appeared that you blamed self destructive tendencies on religion. "That's a sign of how fundamentally broken some believers' minds are." The only reason I mentioned this, was that I've seen that sentiment expressed quite a few times. Some people forget where the blame actually lies. The meme that men create their own hells is deeply imbeded in our unconcious. "Careful what you wish for. You might just get it".
@wolf1066
@wolf1066 4 жыл бұрын
@@tonedeafduck4859 I wasn't actually thinking in terms of "self destructive" tendencies, I was thinking of how a person who has been terrified by the threat of hell in their own childhood grows up to *pass that terror on* to other children - it's the classic "abuse cycle" more than "self destructiveness". Given I know a large number of actual *abuse* victims that make a concerted effort not to be as abusive to their children as their parents were to them, one would hope that those who grew up in terror would likewise be averse to inflicting it on others. In the case of my niece, that "hell" was inflicted upon her by her father and his church and, as an adult who should have known better and had the life experience to know what a horror it was, she attempted to inflict that hell on my kids as well because "clearly" I wasn't "doing the right thing" as I wasn't inflicting it on them. Then she actively tried to defend her appalling behaviour by falling back on the bullshit she had been indoctrinated with. I know that not all Christians have the same views and concepts of hell and some that are more focused on the rewards rather than the punishment but there are a lot of Hellfire-and-Brimstone types out there that have been mentally abused as children and programmed to be abusers.

The life on Earth has all the properties we would expect to see in an unguided, undesigned system. The gods have all the properties we would expect if they were created, propagated and defended by human beings. When apologists ask me what happens when we die I say that we return to the same state we were in before we were born. It is a simple cycle non-existence, life and a return to non-existence. It is the pattern we see is all of the things we consider living. Humans are just one of those things.

"Fake it until you make it" - this phrase is so freaking triggering for me... that and "God won't test you beyond that which you can bear." Of all Christian platitudes designed to make the one saying the phrase feel like they are offering "comfort" and the one hearing it feel like there is some aspect of spirituality that they are missing out on. Basically - those two phrases are horrible things to say (especially when someone has lost a loved one) and they are condescending and hurtful as hell. I actually got fed up with my church/cult when my husband died and all I heard were these two phrases. Then when I got disciplined 2 months later because it "was time to move on" that pretty much broke through my doubts and when all was said and done, I had said "good-bye" to the group... followed by discovering the scandals involving the International HQ... which led to agnosticism and finally acceptance of my atheism. All because people liked to pat themselves on the back for their "devotion" when in fact it is just an excuse to feel superior to the rest of us.

I had the belief that people were good, honest, and had some sort of driving urge to want to learn, and want to test reality, and make more informed decisions about their way of thinking. I was soo wrong. People dont care about what they can show to be real, they really only care about what makes them feel good. Even if they know its lies. That brings to me to my handle, I went from just being the Atheist that wants to help people, to now I'm just a Pistoph Atheist. This account isnt very old, like a few months, and already, Theists have got me put behind so many ban walls, that I doubt many ppl will ever see this post.

I think I've never been a real believer, I doubted since I was a child (my parents were on the edge: insisting on scientific approach, never telling there was god or not, but we visited church sometimes), I was a solid atheist since I was maybe 13. Once I dreamt I was in a theatre and suddenly it started shaking and crumbling, and everyone saved themselves except me (I helped others to get out and then I got stuck, I insisted they go). And then the floor fell out and I started falling down. I feel down to hell I feel, like Alice, down a hole and kept falling. It got hot fast, there were flames and lava. There were imps and others scurrying visible through caves in walls. As I looked up, I saw blueness and whiteness, and maybe angels far in the distance above. Very soon a devil (a major demon, or Lucifer's avatar) came and I sort of stopped falling, just hanging there. He laughed maniacally and told me, now I'm in Hell. I asked him, why not in heaven, I never did anything significantly bad. He cringed a bit and told me, atheists never get into heaven they don't like us there at all. Therefore I'll suffer and burn in Hell! I ask him whether I was dead and was a bodiless soul. The devil told me that's what I was. "Oh, I refuse to suffer then," - and I felt nice and comfortable because it's bodily tissues that can not but feel, and I had none. He was wordless for a moment, telling me then that that's what people do here, they suffer and repent. I agreed that some people may feel they need that, they think they need to go through it to cleanse, but I don't agree I even deserve torture. I was already expecting to float around looking into various types of torture, sneering at imps, maybe finding something too explore, and when I'll get enough I'll look into whether I can go somewhere else then hell. I was very upset I had to die so young, but you can't plan sometimes, it just happens. The devil looked at me sadly and told me, I'm no fun, I'll spoil everything, completely everything, he doesn't want anything to do with me. But the heaven doesn't want me either! So he sent me back, I rose up fast and some in the rubble of the theatre. I told people who were there that I was lucky and nothing fell on me, I was saved by some large piece of roof or whatever. I never learned what should happen if I die later, but I felt I'll live a long life because they would have to decide where to place me.

If human beings are to be judged them going straight upstairs or straight downstairs after they die is far too simplistic and childish a system of justice. We are all very complex. We need to be assessed in a complex manner. A complex report about us needs to be written - not just for us to be saved or damned.

Exactly all Christians prove with "hell" is that God can't view people outside if a black/white view point. Which goes to show he isn't omnipotent.

One of the issues I have with the God of fundamentalist Christianity is that "he", as proved by "his" system of justice does not seem to be that bright (in terms of intelligence and also emotional empathy) Rather worrying really if he did exist - considering he has the most powerful job in the universe.
