You are like superwoman! I know I wouldn't have the patience to home school our 1 child never mind 4! We are in the UK and our son just went back to school last week into Year 1. It was much needed for him and my husband and I. My husband and I have been working from home full time since March, I think we managed about 2 weeks of home schooling when the schools shut over here before it became too overwhelming for all of us trying to fit it in with work and general parenting. It was just too stressful for us all, our son was not interested (he was in reception which is age 4-5) and we're trying to fit in teaching in-between work calls, it was just too much. We were all much happier when we just let the school work go and concentrated on just making sure our son was cared for and reassured during the lockdown period.

New to the abeka curriculum. Are you accredited or not? Have trouble choosing what to do. I have a 1st grader and 2nd grader. They are finishing up public school now
@AmandaSandefur3 жыл бұрын
Yay! Proud of you mama 💞 We do not do accredited. I will probably switch to that if we are still using this curriculum when my kids reach Jr High or HS level. I find it makes it easier on me with not having to send their materials in or needing to call in for reading evaluations etc...
@LauraAndHome3 жыл бұрын
@@AmandaSandefur does it make it easier to switch to public schools if needed in the future?
@AmandaSandefur3 жыл бұрын
@@LauraAndHome academically your kiddos will be just fine or possibly ahead if they went back into the public schools. I was homeschooled with primarily Abeka and entered public for HS; I was just fine and even ahead in some areas. They may struggle with things being taught differently (common core style and so on) but Abeka is usually a grade ahead.

My daughter is in 4th grade in public school. We are starting Abeka in January for the 2nd semester of 4th grade. & I’m having a baby in February 🙈 it’s going to be craziness but we’re so excited! My daughter is nervous about the social change but I’m hoping it won’t be too stressful for her. She’s been in public school her whole life so homeschooling will be a big change!
@AmandaSandefur4 жыл бұрын
Congrats! 💞I love the excitement that new babies bring. That will be a big change! But it's a lot of fun having so much extra time together, it can be difficult sometimes, haha 😂But I really love that I'm around them so much. It's fun seeing them learn and make connections as they learn new things. The social side of homeschool is a lot of work for sure, it takes some extra effort to build and maintain friendships. But it's absolutely doable and the freedom that you will have in your schedule is so freeing!

Really great mom! What would you say your most important role in Abeka learning is? Are you checking their work everyday, do textbooks come with the curriculum?
@AmandaSandefur3 жыл бұрын
Hi! We do the streaming videos, so i'm not needing to be their "teacher" but I have found it is vital for me to stay on top of checking their work. I need to make sure they are completely their assignments 😉and that they are understanding and not falling behind. If you do the complete video option the textbooks are included. This is what we have always done.

Your so convincing me I just want to buy the whole Abeka bundles for Madison as she gets older! How did your kids handle the videos/computer when they were younger? I know Madison is only 2 but she's not so hot at iPad stuff I worry about her messing up the videos somehow.
@AmandaSandefur4 жыл бұрын
They haven't struggled too much with treating them gently and respecting when it's school time vs. when its playtime on the tablets. For the most part the kids don't need to navigate through them so they don't need to be proficient at using them or anything.

How did your son like the 4th grade readers? Did u feel the need to add more literature or was it enough for him? I have 2 starting 4th and one in 1st
@AmandaSandefur3 жыл бұрын
My eldest daughter, Nora, is my fourth grader. She LOVES to read and she really enjoys the stories in these readers, however, she is reading extra books just for fun. I think for basic reading skill these readers suffice, but if your kids enjoy reading you would probably want to have other options available. Also, about half way through the year they have them select alternative books separate from the included readers to do a report on.

How much do they incorporate the religion/bible in learning? As the teacher/mom do you need to be well versed on the bible for facilitating learning?
@AmandaSandefur3 жыл бұрын
If you do a parent led options (not video) you can choose which subjects you want to use from Abeka. If you do the videos you have to do every subject, however, the teachers are the ones teaching your kiddos at that point, so you don't have to do any instruction. What I've found is that unless you do the Bible lessons portion, its just taught from a Christian perspective (creation etc...) and that there are versus in the margins of textbooks. You don't have to be well versed in the Bible for the academic teaching.

I’m homeschooling this year for the first time and have a 7 year old and a 14 month old son so we are trying to find a routine that gives my daughter the least amount of distraction. I’ve used the K5 math from Abeka in the past but am using BJU press for first grade now however, my daughter will go back and work in her Abeka math on her own so I’m thinking about switching back to Abeka 😃 Just wondering if you use the manipulatives and extra games that Abeka has? We are year round schoolers with ABeka, such a complete program :) I do binders instead of crate system and pull out their daily work, highlighting top of pages so they know what need be complete. We are parent led; will be until I can't ;) All was crazy until I made sure I set up kids' material to have time to help. Can't have all three needing help at the same time :D 16 months apart is GREAT some days and a struggle others :) Year-round sounds AWFUL. It's not. It keeps structure when Daddy is working and keeps kids from being nervous about breaks and "forgetting" what they learn.

I am glad I am only teaching two grades! Our middle kid, Taylor, was the one reading with ease, pushing Makayla to pick up the slack. Makayla has no problem being in the same grade level as long as they are doing separate lessons ;) I think he is only 10 lessons behind. I am glad homeschooling gives such flexibility and Abeka is so structured, I feel comfortable in how and what they are learning. I was homeschooled before high school.

Hello there this is my first year with abeka I lobe it but I have a question on grading like the speed drills and test do we subtract from 100 or we add the points that shows on the key books I am little confuse because when I add the points it does not add to 100 for speed drills and test
@CassieLHomeschool4 жыл бұрын
Almost all of Abeka materials are meant to be graded by subtracting from 100, so I would assume speed drills are the same. If you’re in the academy, the video manual usually has a section that talks about how to grade each item so it may shed some light as well. Hope that helps! :)
