I had a half liter pot similar to the Trangia that I bought when I lived in Germany. It had the same "crust". I never wanted to clean it off either, was worried it would change the flavor or something. I always felt like it imparted some magical flavor into the water that was used for coffee or tea. Strange things that we develop as part of our rituals. Somehow I missed this video. It showed up in my recommended feed so I watched it.

I very much like your videos.. cannot help but to feel identified. It's clear how much you enjoy your coffee "ritual". I'll suggest to you to try drinking Mate (yerba mate), an Argentinian traditional infusion . It's a ritual even when prepared inside an office building. I'm quite sure you'll enjoy it if you manage to find yerba close to where you live and get accustomed. Regards from Argentina

Thanks for sharing this Erik. You answered some questions I'd always had in the back of my mind. 🙂 My kettle is very old too... probably 40 years old now. It's battered, and melted but has been in the woods with me for a long time. Although cheaper/newer/lighter ones are available, I always take my trusty old aluminium kettle with me: it wouldn't be the same without it.

I love the fire patina on my pot of choice so you can imagine my surprise when I cam home one day and seen this sparkling pot on the counter that looked just like my favourite well seasoned pot. I asked the wife where she got it and she tells me it's mine and she cleaned it because she was tired of looking at it..... I was in shock and awe at the same time. I couldn't believe how sparkling she got it and she did say it took her hours....lol.....well she now understands that I actually prefer my pot the way I do and she will leave my camp pots alone. Nice video.

Long ago I learned to soap up the bottom and outside of the pot with dishwashing liquid. After cooking on the fire, the black comes right off with ease. But, I can see the point of not cleaning it at all when all you are making is coffee every time and not food - just pop it in the sack so as not to get the soot on other things, and leave it be. Even simpler!

SO appreciate your videos. Simplicity at its best. Love this same hiking ritual, only with black tea. It's a very Zen kind of experience, calming, centering. I'm looking forward to days like the one in your video here in Colorado. Right now we're in a cold snap with temperatures at about -14 C, so hikes like this will have to wait a bit. Got a Firebox Nano a couple of winters ago and love using it just like this. My old teapot looks a lot like yours. Thanks again. Thumbs up!

Here in Colorado also. We have been living here in the winter months for twenty years and I don’t remember it being such a long stretch of cold weather. This is like our weather in NH. Guess I am letting the cold get to me in my old age. We always was hiking in below zero temps back in NH. We were dressed for it and prepared. Have a nice time out in the great outdoors of Colorado once it is a little warmer.

Today it is difficult to believe that the origin of the firebox. It was a hobo stove. Homeless people cook equipment during the deepest period of shortages in the 1930s. Now it's a luxury to get to use it.
