Of all the problems I had with Legends 2, (most you already covered), tone wasn't one of them. The series always had to dual identity and mildly raunchy humor. Something you forget about was the Digger Licencing Exams.

Actually, the the pursuit of the keys was under the promise of the ancients granting them access to lost technology, along with the ability to make an unlimited supply of refractors. So it does make sense why they’d go after them. Given the fact that Barrel and his partner were obsessed with unlocking the secrets of the motherload for that potential same purpose, it’s not a stretch at all for why’d they go after the keys. If it turned out to not be true.

I will say that as any FF the use of dialogues and words for exposition is weak on main plot courses which led to the fans actually construct the whole piece together. Hopefully they seem to be getting better at this flaws.

I think the lore is interesting in this game, and I appreciate its existence, but there's a lot more character and charm to Kattelox island. I've played the first about 10 times but I've only played this one twice. It's just a slog to get through some segments. Despite that, I'd still like a third entry.

yeah for me the main dungeons just felt to over complicated especially since the water dungeon (im about to do that in my 9 run rn) its so slow and in the lava area there are just guys that pop out of the floor and randomly kill you

The first felt more immersive (birds chirping, banks, ATMs, a hospital, a museum, cars on the roads, more interesting side quests, etc.) The world in the second one was comparatively bland. I wish they put more effort into it.

I don't know, as a kid I played the second game first, and then played the first one and it felt like such a downgrade. The open world is nice but the design of the locations feels so primitive and blocky. The shoping center just being a single corridor with shops. The city just being simple completely flat with perfectly spaced buildings and houses that you can't interact with. The locations in legends 2 feel more dense, arquitecture and characters with unique designs. I think there is a lot of character in legends locations, an atmospheric calm snowing city, a city in the desert in ruins, a poor neighborhood in the fields, an elegant airship. Megaman legends 1 city just feels like what a child would inmediately think and draw if you ask him to draw a city.

In recent interviews they've mentioned they are aware that there are people wanting something for the battle network and legends series. So more than likely we'll eventually get collections for them but I don't think we'll ever get sequels. Which for battle network I'm ok with because the story had a proper ending so trying to continue the story could ruin it. I'd be ok with a redesign kinda like starforce.

Megaman Legends is the kind of series that was so damaged by their ambition and the time of its release. So many little "mistakes" that have been pulished by the collective efforts of developers over the years. Its unfair to ask of megaman legends to inovate in so many areas, but also its difficult to ignore the systems that don't work. I specially hate how the camera zooms in to megaman when he is targeting, making the character interfere with your vision. Its specally annoying when the enemies are above megaman and the camara just goes under you and then you can't literally see anything aside from yourself, and the camera starts spining like crazy trying to focus on the enemy. But on the other hand how could I blame it, it would take a few more years for resident evil 4 to codify over the shoulder camera for third person shooters. I really like these games, I didn't grow up with an n64, these were in a sense my ocarina of time. My big 3D epic adventures, and there is plenty to love in them. They are just in desperate need of a remake or at least a modernization.

I hate how the lock-on system works. The birdbot base is the most annoying area in the game, specially the last section, since you'll be constantly locking onto the wall turrets, the flying ship, the birdbots and the tanks.

This game and the first one are kind of interesting to me because they both have things I like and dislike about them. As it stands now, i'd say the games are pretty equal in my eyes and I tend to revisit them both when I feel in the mood for one or the other. I will admit that I have replayed legends 1 more than this one however. For the most part I agree with a lot of your complaints in this video especially the nino ruins. I've never played the water temple in OoT but i'm pretty sure if people played this game they would not consider it the worst water dungeon ever afterwards. Your sentiments on the drill arm echo mine to a T though and I wonder if the design team were aware that the game would still have the one special weapon limit because having to constantly bring the drill arm with you (even though in this game, it chews through bosses like paper) defeats the whole purpose of even giving you options to work with. The first game side stepped this issue by just not even giving it to you until the end and having its main usage be relegated to opening shortcuts in the ruins with only one item being locked behind a wall. I am surprised you didn't mention the license exams though which are probably the best new addition to this game. They basically let you up the difficulty of your playthrough by doing these completely skill based challenges (so no special weapons, no heals and its just you, your buster and the lifter which is waaaayyyyy more useful than you gave it credit for) and in exchange for this you get more money from enemies which is probably why the prices were so inflated in the game and you can do these as soon as you enter yosyonke essentially. As a person that really likes the more creative difficulties in games I kind of appreciate this because you get something more out of it by making the game tougher for yourself especially since, from what i remember, it even stacks with very hard mode. I guess to end off, I do like the idea of the variety of dungeons that they had with this game. It gave each one a unique flavor and made them more mechanically interesting than the ones in legends 1 but I think they could've been executed better because they don't loop back on themselves as gracefully and due to the long nature of them you never really want to go back in just to mess around especially with so many enemies and traps in your way. I think that if they were to come back to this series again, dungeons like the ones here should be more sparse and the the almost sewer system like design of the first games ruins should be the main driving vehicle for the games progression.

For people having trouble with the water dungeon i don't know what to say than besides it doesn't run right on any emulator at least for the ps1 version but it just runs bad on original hardware too. On the psp version they fixed the stupid water dungeons to run at 1.5x to 2x speed or improved the framerate since nino ruins is actually playable and one of the better dungeons in the game when its running right. Only downside is that there's no English patch so you'd have to play through it in Japanese

I'm super happy because I agreed with everything and I wanted someone out there to share this opinion. I was actually kinda hesitant, because everyone seems to love this one above the others, but my problems are exactly the ones you pointed out in your video. But now I have your video to direct to people what my opinion is in the game because you put it more eloquently. I would even add that focusing on one island is better to build up and develop characters than making you go through a lot of streotypical little islands with little to no personality in them. I like the lore expansion and the direction of the cutscenes, it really feels like a good narrative despite it isn't. And omg, the Nino Ruins are just one of the worst experiences I had with video games, OoT water temple has nothing on this. And what gets kinda under my skin about Bola is not his lack of development, but that I like his dsign the most and his name in my native language is just "ball". And the developers had the chance to be aware of this, they even put 3 questions about Brazil in the quiz mini game.

I wish they would remake these games and make a new entry in the series. I never got to experience these as a kid but my best gaming friend had the one for n64 and it always fascinated me. I am an RPG guy but I have a love and fascination for quasi action adventure games that have sone RPG elements like Zelda. I love the battle network games. I would love to play these some day if they ever get a port or remaster.

I liked the water dungeon a lot. That gigantic manta ray blew my mind as a kid. But I do agree that 50% time scale was a bit much. The idea was good on paper but the actuality is horrible. If it was only about 20% slower, it would have been better.

I think the game is great and has a lot of charm to it, that dungeon with the giant roaming reaverbot was kinda chilling. So was the bottom of the ocean. But this one really really REALLY apes the tone and style of Castle in the Sky. I think the tone is fine. Its an adventure you are going to have light hearted moments and darker ones as well. Too bad we will never get a sequel.

I have never played Mega Man Legends 2. The first was fantastic but had some interesting controls...it was almost unplayable even when it was new. However, it's still amazing so I dealt with and got used to it. For reference- you can emulate the first game without slowdown on the PlayStation Mini using Retroarch. I did and it played flawlessly. Addendum- Capcom needs to re-release these two games with proper 3rd person dual stick controls. They don't have to remaster or remake them minus getting them to display properly on a 4K screen. I don't care what console either as we have every current gen machine in our home (Series X and PS5 *physical). We also have every 8th generation console as well but it's really time to stop supporting them.

I think is some *really* poor, awful and bad optimization of that section perhaps they forgot to "fix" the underwater section, cause I could swear few years ago when I played it on emulator, the underwater section was literally unplayable, like 2 FPS, I shit you not, and previously to that point the game was completely fine at 60 FPS. God knows what settings I tried changing here and there, and managed to get it back to normal underwater frame rate, and my memory might fail me but I'm sure I managed to improve it more than what it seems on the video. And your guess is as good as mine as to what may cause this issue, but I'm leaning to think the way they coded this underwater section was either something that the PS could barely handle, perhaps meant to be implemented or as a learning technique for the PS2 since the lifespan of the PS1 was at closure so may as well just try to push limitations or some intentionally jank thing they tried to do to make water looks and behave as if you were actually underwater.

I think what's happening is the updated physics are being calculated per tick or there's a long loop process occurring..

I loved those Turret chickens in Saul Kada and I never really had a problem with the underwater levels, though I'd see why they'd be annoying. I haven't played this game since 2001 though so maybe it was just 14 year old me eating shit and rationalizing it as needing to git gud. (And gitting gud meant farming Zeni to max out the Shining Laser)

Since we're talking about emulation here, I'm pretty sure today's i9 and ryzen 7 processors plus 3080TI video cards can run the Water and Lava ruins without slowdown now, right? Because a 2007 1.8Ghz dual core and a 1st gen i5 processor with ATI 5650 graphics didn't cut it and choked down the system unless I go software mode.

The game is coded to run poorly. Unless you're keeping that computer in an oven with no fan it shouldn't have issues running PS1 games. A Pentium 4 from the early 2000s could run PS1 games well enough.

Valid criticisms but given year 2000 technology and 3D level design, I would say all of the criticisms are negligible considering how avant-garde this title was for the brand and series. Shame it didn't sell better.

From what I remember, unlike Legends, I didn't finish this one. I was set on getting the "Zero saber" sub weapon, and there was a quiz game with like 40 questions to win it. And I try over and over again. I wrote all the answers, crossed the wrong ones and try again. Hours, I think. But I finally got it! And it was shit, of course. I kinda bailed after that.

As a kid who played Legends 2 before the first game, it set the bar for me for this franchise. I felt the opposite regarding the world building in MML1 vs MML2. I felt that MML2 had a much bigger/expansive world, especially since the lore in 2 was expanding upon Volnutt's origins, Roll's family, the civilization of the Ancients, The Master, and what The Motherlode that everybody sought after truly was. The intro cinematic alone was enough to sow intrigue as to what kind of things you'll uncover in the story. Unlocking Volnutt's past memories after collecting the Motherlode keys was also mind-blowing as a young kid. MML1's world felt smaller and a bit monotonous to me since it all happened within Kattelox Island. Unlocking a new island/area in MML2 always had this sense of wonder as a kid since where you wanted to see what was new or different in that new location and what parts of the mystery will be uncovered there. Each distinct island/location felt like a breath of fresh air and made the adventure feel much more expansive as if you were seeing different countries/cultures. The first time you drop into the storm clouds of Forbidden Island had that sense of exploring the unknown as to what you'll find down there and if you'll be able to find the Sulphur Bottom successfully given that people rarely return from there. Also hearing the story about "The Two Goddesses" in Yosyonke also hyped up the lore of this world the same way the ancient prophetic painting of Trigger and Juno in MML1 did. The Legends franchise itself drew a lot of influences from "Castle In The Sky" which was a very entertaining adventure film: An ancient floating castle perpetually surrounded by storm clouds supposedly hiding treasures/technology, pirates, air ships, etc. This was very pronounced in MML2 actually, but with their own twists and variations to the story. There were also fun mini-games such as Pokke Village Mayor's quiz (where you need to complete the 100-questions flawlessly to unlock a part needed for the Blade Arm weapon), the roller skate time trials, and the Digger's License Exams which let you access some of the restricted ruins on the various islands, which unlocks more content in the game. The unique themes for each Key Ruins also added some variety to the challenge, and yes I agree with the dislike for the Nino Island underwater ruins. I thought that they especially nailed the feeling that Ruins were scary and dangerous places since I was so afraid of re-entering/backtracking the Nino Island and Saul Kada ruins due to the unique challenges that they presented. Stepping foot on the moon/Elysium also made you wonder how much advanced the Ancient's lost technology and civilization was to create such a world. All in all, MML2 has its fair share of flaws some of which were discussed in this video. But overall, I think it has introduced a lot more good into the franchise as a whole especially in universe/lore-building.

yeah, I despise legends 2. they really messed a lot up in the game. some things you didn't address: weapon balance: the drill arm is actually super broken, and the machine buster is ruined by the weird shot limit they put in the game. point of machine buster was the continuous fire, but you're now limited to how much you can shoot. OoT ripoff: most of the game is just a rip-off of OoT. you go to the forest, fire and water temples (complete with water level changing mechanics), along with an ice temple to collect the spirit ston- I mean keys to unlock the temple of ti-I mean to get to the island or something, I forget. the encyclopedia quiz: quite possibly the worst idea implemented. a random quiz that has random questions that usually have nothing to do with the legends world, and is just straight up real world encyclopedia questions. wtf!

Omfg you voiced all the complaints I have with this game. I never understood the strong love for the 2nd game. The only things it has going for it is the lore - which answers a lot of questions I had at the end of the first game - and the improved control of Megaman, and the graphics. I feel like in every other way, it's weaker than the first. Maybe its story feels so weak because there's no pay off in the end - just a set up for a third game that never happened.

PlayStation seems to have better games on all systems except for maybe like smash bros and bombermans but bomberman is way too difficult.

I hate that emulations didn't find a way to make the Water dungeon to run normally. Capcom said that the water dungeon being half-speed was a bug, probably the Ps1 couldn't handle the water effects properly. That being said, the PSP version of this game doesn't have the slow down on the water levels. It's a shame that version was never released over here.

MML is one of those series that just never caught my attention, especially because due to personal circumstances my game generation escalation was SNES directly to PS2. They always looked like something I wanted to try out one day, when I didnt have anything else pending. Review is real good as always, even though I'd argue a couple of the clips slipped in-between points of the review felt... arbitrary and detached from the content. Anyways I guess you'll have to play Namco X Capcom, Tatsunoko v Capcom, and Project X Zone to ever see this cast in anything past the year 2000 gg no re have fun (Yes I am fully aware the first and third games in those lists are like the Musou of SRPGs, I'll accept being a lizard person for liking them)

Legends 2 is a hot mess from start to finish. The vision for the game is impressive, but I think the Legends series would be better served by a remake of this game rather than a sequel. It needs to be a fuller, more polished experience to deliver its ambitious narrative.
