@@abritishaudiophile7314 I purchased Ernest Ranglin for download from Qobuz after watching your video, and I still have 30' of this video I have yet to watch. I'm also checking out Andreas' suggestion on Ritenour. It's unfortunate that not all recordings are high quality recordings. There are times when I say I like the song, but it doesn't sound good and wonder whether there's something amiss with my setup. Then I listen to "10" from Piano Guys (which I consider an excellent recording), and then conclude that my setup is fine - it was a less than stellar recoding of the other song that caused it to not sound good.

It sounds amazing, however have you tried listening music on audiophile equipment with weed or psychedelics. I have beginner audiophile equipment and due to the pandemic I only have modafinil with me. Even with that, music sounds 10 times better to me. I think the sober mind is a little slow to hear all the intricacies of a musical composition in split seconds so the real power of audiophile equipment is inaccessible to it. However, people in the audiophile community are 50/50 on it as they think it’s very dangerous. Have you had any experience with this?
@abritishaudiophile73144 жыл бұрын
Hi Rahul, I know is I am not American but I am going to take the 5th Amendment on this one. All I will say is the more relaxed you are the more likely you are to be able to enjoy your music 🍺🍺🍺
@MrGorpm4 жыл бұрын
I would hazard a guess that "Psychedelics" feed your brain things that are not there in the first place. I have no need for such things as I can relax and enjoy music without the use of narcotics.
@rahulbhatia37674 жыл бұрын
Roy Mepham Thanks for the reply man. Its just that since hi-res audio has become affordable to many, people like me are able to listen to it and bring new prospectives. I’m sorry but I totally disagree with you on this. Psychedelics and Weed are actually great for music and even watching t.v. I’m not condoning it’s use since it might not be a good decision for some people but that’s why Rap music is advertised with Weed and Edm, House music with Mdma. Sober mind is slower for music and some of these “psychedelics” also release certain locked chemicals in the brain. This makes you hear music in a way you never heard before, bringing out the true power of audiophile equipment. Psychedelics aside from DMT do not cause you to see or hear anything that isn’t there, even with LSD all you see are breathing surfaces and distorted colors, the rest are daydreams if any. You can even experiment this with modafinil or Piracetam, just the appropriate dosage for starters and just notice how good the music sounds, it sounds tighter, faster paced, more immersive and you hear certain compositions that you haven’t heard before. Since its a nootropic and not a psychedelic, it’s easier to procure and will also give you an added bonus of increased awareness. Hope this helps.
@Coneman34 жыл бұрын
Drugs can also make ordinary things seem great. Try going out sober with a group of friends who are drinking or on drugs 😂. Having said that, I do believe some influence from drugs can give some deeper insights which the sober mind may not get. Also, some music probably is better when on drugs, but I suspect it isn’t about details, more the effect of the music.

Just a couple of thoughts: you gallop through your collection, making comments like "good but not audiophile recording" but on greatest hits and 'best of' CDs surely quality varies according to different sources of the tracks? and you're covering material from the 1950's to the present day, not a level playing field. Then there's the issue of recordings being re-mixed for re-issue or simply for CD release. Remixes/remasters/re-issues are a minefield and perhaps too nerdy to get into, but picking two of your favourite CDs which I also have.... I notice a difference between (the same) tracks on original Sade Diamond Life and the Best of compilation..... and you rate the recording of Tori Amos Into the Pink very highly, I thought it was disappointing compared to the God remixes on CD. Mmmm - and thats what I call REAL REMIXES not just tweaking a few sliders and extending the play time.

Hi Tarun, I have just discovered your channel and have enjoyed some of your insights. Seeing those Target stands brings a tear to my eye... I gave mine away with my Sonus Fabers that I sold last year. Didn’t appreciate how good they are compared to my KEF replacements. I made a big decision last year. The Krell amp also went, along with all the Transparent Audio cables. Even the Roksan CD player and ARCAM streamer. Why? Because I am ‘downsizing’. Why? Because the 2 most important factors for great sound are the listening room and the recording quality. You mentioned somewhere that a £2k system can sound better than a £250k system. Since buying my first Technics/Dual/Castle system at university nearly 40 years ago, I have drooled in hifi stores and hotel rooms over exotica that looks as good as it sounds. Now I have a £2k system and the simplicity that I increasingly appreciate as I get older and try to declutter. I opted for the KEF LS50 Wireless and a Qobuz Studio HiRes subscription (which they have just reduced from £25pm to £10pm). I also have Spotify which has a better interface and is more convenient for their variety of playlists and when listening in the car. I have to admit that even with my Sennheiser HD650s and the highly rated Xduoo TA-10 DAC/tube amp, the difference between the Qobuz and Spotify is minimal at best and nothing compared to what can be achieved in other areas. But that’s it. My sulking Gyrodec, that great looking turntable will probably end up on eBay while the boxes of cd’s and vinyl in the garage will probably end up going the same way. Except..! Most of the available recordings on the streaming services tend to be the newer remastered versions. Remastering is mostly about compression and loudness which, in my opinion and with a few notable exceptions, usually sounds worse to an audiophile than the original vinyl or CD. So, do I have to hook up a CD transport and turntable to my KEFs and leave the garage cluttered, or stick to the minimalist simplicity? The message to your subscribers Is that any half decent speakers hooked up to a half decent digital source will sound great if they are correctly positioned in a good listening room, while listening to a high quality recording. Unfortunately, shared living spaces rarely permit this and there is surprisingly little audiophile recording media out there but this is the cheapest (equipment wise) and most effective route to massive gains in the pursuit of audio nirvana. It makes the cleaning and dusting easier too!

Hi gnomadification, I really enjoyed reading about your hifi journey. I am glad it worked out well in the end. I totally agree that the most important thing in any system is to get the speaker position right. I don’t know if you have seen my video on speaker set up but that was the reason I wanted to do the video. Thank you for watching and taking the time to share your experiences.

I'll take the risk of being rude now - this is not a very original collection bordering on being utterly boring Don't get me wrong its mostly good music (yesyes-it's subjective), but it's like having a collection of everything from several decades and genres, that was popular at a certain time or a certain kind of people were talking about and - Oscar Peterson one of the greatest BLUES pianists? i mean really? not even starting on that Bill Evans comment^^ I am having a REALLY hard to time to reign in my inner music-nazi here *sigh*

Hi Tarun, I suggested a few things on your 'Demo disc' video and since then discovered a couple more things you might like to try. For quite astonishing 'there-in-the-studio' sound and vocal presence 'Skinny', the opening track on 'Hit me hard and Soft' by Billie Eilish...not normally my sort of thing, but this has to be heard (make sure your subwoofer's on and everything's tied down!). A lovely jazz piano trio recording is the Ray Brown Trio's 'Live at Sculler's'. This, of course, features Ray's 4 string bass in this Telarc 'Jazz' series album, try the 2nd track 'En Estate'....the timbre of the bass (he goes down to the open bottom E natural c. 41hz) is beautifully caught, and Benny Green on piano is amazing as usual!

I frequent the Steve Hoffman forums for informarion regarding best source/mastering of recordings. Anything Steve Hoffman has mastered Ive been extremely happy with. Some of the older DCC albums draw quite a premium but if he has mastered one of your favorite albums, its worth the coin. Source is always important. I enjoy many of the SACDs that MOFI puts out. The majority are sourced from the original master tapes but the mastering can be hit or miss depending on who did it. Their releases of the Dire Straits catalogue have been quite nice. Also, check out Analogue Production SACD releases. Their Pink Floyd 5.1 mixes have been fantastic. These are hybrid discs, so they have a red book layer and have stereo mixes as well. Love your channel. Thanks.

And isn't this why we have high quality systems? So we can actively listen to music with all it's emotional content. Two current favorites : Commander Cody, 'Lost in the Ozone'. Clean recording of honky-tonk music with piano, fiddle, pedal steel and guitar. Just beautiful music and recording. The Essential Bo Diddley. One of the fathers of rock and roll. Classic Chess recording quality. All done in the analogue domain.

You put a big smile on my face when you mentioned Hell Freezes Over. One of the best-sounding albums around, and in my personal opinion, probably the best live rock concert ever put onto disc. However, if you ever take a peek at what the tracks look like, you'll notice that it is ridiculously highly compressed, and has some clipping. Sad but true. And the "remaster" isn't any better. If you ever want to get a nice, uncompressed version, reach out to me; I have some tips. Still sounds great either way though! Thanks for the list.

@@abritishaudiophile7314 Probably only serious (read: overkill) Eagles fans like myself will be interested. It drove me nuts that I couldn't get a good copy of this album, because it's one of the best of all time. Every version, including the remaster is compressed to the point of clipping. The same can be said for the Dolby DVD that is very common. However, if you find a copy of the older non-Dolby (DTS-only) DVD, the PCM track on that particular copy is pristine. ASIN 6305301107. I used a program called Audacity to then extract these tracks to FLAC. And what you get is awesome, dynamic uncompressed tracks.

Hi Tarun. Nice to see that your channel isn't exclusively about kit! So glad you highlighted the Ernest Ranglin - a spot on recording with a proper bottom end! You may already be familiar with some of these but here are a few other recommendations: 1) As you're a Blues fan, you might enjoy John Martyn's "The Church With one Bell" and the acoustic outing from James Cotton titled "Deep In The Blues" produced by John Snyder and engineered by Jay Newland - in fact anything produced and/or engineered by Snyder/Newland is worth a listen (e.g. Jeanie Bryson's "Some Cats Know" on Telarc). 2) Zakir Hussein's "Making Music with John McLaughlin et al on ECM. 3) Patricia Barber's "Modern Cool" (a revelation) or perhaps Emilie-Claire Barlow's "The Beat Goes On". Another Jay Newland engineering job worthy of mention is "Beyond The Missouri Sky" from Chalie Haden and Pat Metheny. Thanks for the great work - it's down to earth and straightforward with no snobbery attached. Always welcome for me.

Thanks for that list - many of these I will be checking out. I wanted, as you asked(!), to mention what others may consider as great recordings. I have several I could mention - but standing above all the others is from opera. This is the Decca studio recordings of Wagner's 'Ring Cycle' - four operas (and 20 hours of music) with the first opera (Das Rheingold) recorded 1958 and the last (Gotterdammerung) in 1966. Decca used possibly the greatest orchestra of the day (Vienna Philharmonic), the finest Wagnerian singers, the best acoustic sounding venue - moreover Decca created new microphone arrays and new recording techniques. It was such an expensive venture that, reputedly, Decca only broke even on those recordings in the 1980s - certainly it's never been repeated. There are also several pressings of the LPs and at least 4 remasterings in various formats - CD and HIgh-Res. It is a truly unique recording - by the very best musicians and engineers in the business with the finest equipment. Start with the very beginning of Rheingold - turn the lights down very low, with total quiet in the house and a system that does justice to the rumblings of massed double-basses as the river Rhine passes through your sound-stage!

Very good quality recording. Good vibe Her band is tight. Solid lyrics. Discovering her was way better than the movie. She is from Rome. Its hard to tell though. Have you heard “Heigh Ho” by Blake Mills, especially “I’m Not Worthy". One of those you really like but don”t know why, you just do. Sorry about the clipped text. I was an engineer by trade. In Jazz I love Midnight Sugar from Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio, or the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, or Chat Baker along the ones you've already mentioned. Yello is quite fun to listen to especially the Flag, Baby and the Essential. Time Flies and Night Owls from Vaya Con Dios are great albums I think. On the classical side Holst’s Planets on Decca with the Montreal Symphony is a fantastic recording, and Four Sea Interludes by Benjamin Britten on Chandos with the Ulster Orchestra is a great test piece; the opening for strings is beautifully done and the fourth movement “Storm” will exercise a system as the name suggests. A lot of audiophile quality artists like Nora Jones, Diane Krall and Eva Cassidy I’ve picked up on cd from charity shops up here in the east for like 25 or 50p each. For classical quality recordings, try the Deutsche Gramaphone label. I’ve picked up about ten CDs of that label for pennies. The sound quality is mega. A cpl of audiophile channel recommends. Baraka PDub is one. The other is John Darko. Thanks for the up. And I’m actually not an audiophile. Stay safe.

Hi Darren, thank you for the suggestions. I have Kind of Blue on CD and it sound very good so can only imagine the DSD version. Maybe, need to stop imagining and get it. I will check out the Deutsche Gramaphone label as well. On a separate note, I believe we need to claim back the word “audiophile” for the masses. It is why I named my channel, “A British Audiophile.” In my book, if you love music and care about sound quality, then you are an audiophile. It has nothing to do with what equipment you have got. It is unfortunate that this snobby attitude has held our hobby back for as long as it has. Steve Gutenberg, John Darko, Joe N Tell, hopefully myself and other KZbinrs help a little in this regard by the way we run our channels. Thank you for watching and sharing 👍

So glad to see the Ernest Ranglin recommendation. I bought it on its release and it has remained one of my favorites all these years later. I would also recommend his next record, In Search of the Lost Riddim. Brilliant. Love the vids! Keep up the great work. I'd also recommend you check out Macy Gray's "Stripped" on Chesky Records. A recording by audiophiles for audiophiles. Its brilliant.

Awesome collection. Very wide ranging and somewhat eclectic. I was starting to think that I was one of the few people left that still maintain a large CD collection. Unless you did not mention them, I am a bit surprised that you did not mention any Alan Parson, or Pink Floyd. Both got me hooked on complex orchestral mixes that will definitely show the weaknesses of an inferior audio system.

Thank you TJ. I have Alan Parson and Pink Floyd on my hard drive with some high res recordings and vinyl rips but not on CD 😊👍

Oh, one more thing. Look out for a band called Sky. Their self titled first album will make your system sing. Friend of mines dad had huge Sony separates early 80s hooked to two absolute behemoth Mission Speakers.The first teach on the first album called Westway. As soon as the drums come in, it’s earth shattering! One more recommended before I crash out. Get Mezzanine by Massive Attack. Well recorded. Big sound space.And the track Black Milk will test your low end. And talking of low end, get Rythm and stealth by Leftfield. Not only did it take five years to make. But the bass on that album needs a life sentence. The track called Swords is the one with disturbing bass. Happy listening.

Thank you so much for this video. One question: when hearing the Art Pepper Album the soundstage is very strange. Art Pepper is playing far on the left but the other musicians (piano, bass, drums) together all far away on the right without much space between them. In the center there is ... nothing. Do I have a problem with my system or is this the specificity of this recording? Thanks and best regards👍

I have the same album. It is a great album but the positioning of performers is odd like you describe. Thank you for watching Dieter 😊👍
