Sorry about the wait for this video folks - I've been working hard on Journey Across Japan: Escape to Fuji! For more details on the upcoming series you can check it out here (www.abroadinjapan.com/escape-to-fuji). It's going to be a lot of fun and it kicks off in the last week of October! I know this is a super late comment, but I've been binging your content recently. The last point you made about how Japan has made you more appreciative of things really resonated with me. I was born and raised in America, but ever since I was really young I've always had such a high regard for my possessions, especially my electronics. Maybe it was because I was shown Totoro and saw the original Toy Story in theaters around when I was a toddler, but I have also felt a sense of "life" in the things that I own, leading me to treat them with a lot more respect than I can imagine the average person would. It's just always been pretty normal to me to treat objects with a sort of reverence, so it's heartening to hear that there's more of a culture of that over in Japan. I've always wanted to go to Japan, but your channel and others like yours have been a big inspiration to really make a serious push to go. Keep it up and I hope you're still enjoying life over there. It might be the Bri'ish culture of 'banter', that is basically offending your friends. Maybe it can be translated to American English as 'roasting', but 1) I'm not a British-American culture pro to claim it certainly enough; 2) AFAIK British banter seems to be less funny, more offensive and less aimed at the potential audience to appreciate the joke you make, thus making it more sincere and wholesome IMO. When you banter, you just tell your friend he's a strawberry cheesecake-eating fatso for the sake of saying it, not for the societal credit and dominance points you'd get from publicly 'roasting' him.

As a native Japanese I have to point out that when you put a sheet on your futon, you tuck it under on all four sides, otherwise the sheet comes loose from the sides as you move about while you sleep and you are essentially sleeping on a bare futon, which then completely takes away the whole purpose of putting the sheet on in the first place, which is to keep your futon clean and free of germ that comes off of your body. Keep up the great work nonetheless, Chris - from a big fan of yours.

I’ve lived in Japan for over 7 years and everything Chris says is spot on. The best thing is that you don’t have to worry about random violence walking the streets alone in the middle of the night. You always feel safe. But what is it about small apartments? Where are you living Chris. I lived right outside of Tokyo and I have a 2 bedroom apartment for 70,000 yen per month (under $700.00). I have more room here for half the price I was paying in America for a 1 bedroom apartment 7 years ago!

"What does Japan smell like?" is a silly question, but one of the most memorable things from my trip there was walking past an alley and getting hit by the incredible smell from some tiny noodle shop. And this happened multiple times. It was mainly the cognitive dissonance, coming from a country where alleys do not smell like that, that really cemented it in my mind.

As David says, the aromas of various cuisines stick indelibly in mind. So much so that if a "Japanese" restaurant where I now live does not smell like Japan, I won't eat there. However, Japan can also smell like a cloud of diesel thick enough to close your throat as buses idle at a rest stop. Or incense drifting across the neighbourhood from temple grounds. Or a natto fart rising from a sewer grate as you wait at a traffic light. Or various minerals borne out of the earth on vapours rising from an onsen. I could go on and on....

The idea of every object having a life force has some truth to it. Every man made object was made with some sort of hard work, sacrifice, and passion. Same thing when it comes to other objects found in nature every thing was made from a certain process it didn’t just pope into existence. So I guess Japanese ancient culture realized that and people in Japan subconsciously carry this thought. Still it is a really good lesson to teach to kids. Makes you more attentive and caring towards your surrounding environment.

Exactly. Even if it's mass-produced, somebody did design it, design the molds, choose material and finish, designed the interface, software or whatever. In western culture, people seem to bash things without thought, be it an item, show, or even another person on the internet as if they aren't real somehow (seriously, they are, and they have feelings too just like you!). In Japanese culture, people seem to be more mindful each others' and just about everything's existence.

This is probably one of the best channels I've seen that offers an actual real introspection into what life in Japan is really like. Most documentaries and channels make everything seem so beyond real-life magical that it takes the human aspect out of the experience. This is always so light hearted and fun, but gives actual helpful information into everything there. Mad jealous you've been able to spend so long there and hope to do the same for myself one day. Being a New Yorker I actually got culture shock the first time I lived in the US outside of NYC. Tokyo feels a lot more familiar to me than Ohio. When people from other countries visit NYC or Tokyo they see a really different version of life in the US or Japan.

That is because new york and tokyo are megacities, and naturally will have far more in common with one another than far smaller cities such as those in Ohio or Kyushu.

If you come to the US, you will drastically notice the loss of customer service and public civility in a huge manner. It's almost depressing when I see the apathy towards customers here. Wonderful videos that you post and increasing in quality as your editing skills get better and better. Cheers from DC!

I'm an American who has lived in Australia and New Zealand, and spent time in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore. Compared to any of those countries, US customer service really is *that* terrible. Another thing, our airport security and immigration are often massive assholes. And, I live in Houston, a place known for "Southern hospitality." Rural Americans tend to be a bit more civil and provide more helpful service, but *only* marginally so. The US has gradually lost its way in terms of social graces since the 1980s, and it shows.
