Or, as was commonly stated, “McDonnell Douglas bought Boeing with Boeing's money.” In the end, the management from McDonnell Douglas and their financial-based approach to everything started running the company, replacing Boeing's former engineering-based approach. And the history of the company since then shows you the results of the change in so-called "management."

This is Netflix narrative, perfect fit for casual audience. But even my friend who is in the aviation hobby and worked in an airline Flight Operations also believed it for lack of better corporate affair understanding. My father, who interned in a giant Japanese paper mill in Shizuoka, once met a fellow engineer from Mazda, and also from ANA and JAL back in 1980s. Back then, they already complained about Boeing's level of quality, especially fit and finish. It was long before the merger, and the workmanship is already deemed troublesome by major Japanese airlines. Granted, they all used to operate mostly Boeing jets, before ANA took on A320s in early 1990s, and JAL absorbing JAS and their A300s in early 2000s. Maybe... maybe McDonnell Douglas worsened that problem in Boeing. But McDonnell Douglas themselves produced quite a lot of legendary planes like F-4 Phantom and the unbeaten F-15 Eagle, flown from USAF to JASDF. Boeing is not without their own fault. That infamous 737 rudder issues with Parker-Hannifin (single point of failure), the 747 front cargo door latch, and others - casual audience are oblivious to these. But Dc-10 "flying coffin" stuff is something that even Illuminaughti can pick up. Is Boeing today not a marvellous engineering company? The 787 is a magnificent new kind of composite airliner with hyper focus on efficiency. Largely electric plane, big windows, nice cabin, and that underappreciated turbulence-alleviating algorithm with inboard ailerons actively dampening any shaky movements. The 737MAX is nothing sorts of magical for Airbus fanboy like me. Coming from the inferior outdated platform that is 737, it managed to get incredibly close to A320neo given the limitations. They used the same engine (CFM LEAP-1B), however they reduced the diameter due to ground clearance - reducing the engine's efficiency compared to neo (CFM LEAP-1A). As a result, the engineers have to tweak the entire airframes, new wings, new winglets (split winglets), redone tailpipe, redone tailfins, v-stab, what nots. That thing still flies although with some issues. Today, ANA is going all-Airbus narrowbodies and all-Boeing widebodies (biggest 787 operator in the world, except those 3 A380s exclusively going to Hawaii). JAL is the reverse, they are all Boeing narrowbodies and mostly-Airbus widebodies (except their 787s).

Pete, if you read the comments: Once you get the Century it's worth jumping on the Century FB groups and asking around for a JDM/Toyota specialist near you. It might also be worth getting a full inspection. I bought a sight unseen BMW a few years back and an inspection flagged a lot of things that weren't listed by the seller. No stress though, you'll love it once you're driving it.

Sadly aircraft incidents happen. Some are small and some are huge. For instance, my grandfather worked for De Havilland at the time of the Comet disasters of 1954. He was tasked with investigating the cut-outs in the design fuselage (i.e. all the necessary holes. Windows, doors and cable holes etc.) His work greatly contributed to the discovery of metal fatigue and resulting micro-fractures in the corners of the rectangular windows that lead to the aircraft breaking up and crashing. That discovery is the reason why all jet liners now have windows with rounded corners.

Pete, the salmon number does look lovely on you! 😆 Don’t know if I could fly all the way to Japan no matter how much I’d love to. Planes are my #1 phobia - loud, small spaces, heights. The logical part of my brain accepts that they’re safe and functional machines, however my lizard brain says “ABSOLUTELY NOT, am mammal, I’m not supposed to be up here in this metal monstrosity 😫” Had 2 panic attacks flying across the US a month ago, the pilot was WHACK and dropped the plane several times, plus tons of turbulence (from Denver to Portland). That experience plus this video is making sure that I probably won’t fly again for a few years 😂

The door and iPhone were found not far from my house (west of Portland). I was out hiking the next day (it’s very woodsy out there) and we definitely hunted through the underbrush to see if we could find debris. To balance your experience a little, I had good time my first time flying to Japan with Aeroflot (seat belt had the usual sound and staff were nice) some 10 years ago. Also like turbulances (outaide of meal/open cup time of course, it hounts me, that an accident might happen). Without turbulances, flight is really just too boring. I also had ID check in Japan when buying alcohol couple times, but once was what I assume a trainee with senpai standing behind back, observing. It is always fun for me, when someone asks for ID check.

Two of the most turbulent flights I've been on was one on the way from Birmingham to Dublin, it was so windy we literally couldn't land and ended up flying back to Manchester and had to get a taxi all the way back home. Then another time we went to Greece and the flight all the way there was fine, until we got over Greece and it was the most violent storm I'd ever seen, lightning everywhere below us and the plane was shaking like crazy. Scary, but looking back on it, it was really cool

As an aviation enthusiast for 30 years and serious flight simmers only in the past 16 years, I changed my mind when I tasted Shinkansen trains of Japan. It is just a way more dignifying way of travel, simple. It is totally worth that $110 price tag it took, and totally commands $40 premium over ANA flights to Itami, Osaka. Not only it has been running since 1964 accident free, zero death, but also hyper on-time. You can walk, shit, eat, drink, and talk in a private room. You can even smoke in some area of the car if it is your thing. Why would a Japanese exchange that for a "get strapped into your cramped seats every 10 minutes or so". And Japanese airlines keep their cabin temperature like sauna. Regardless how clean Japanese people are, you are going to whiff old people's smell in that super cramped domestic Japanese seat configuration planes, especially for our sensitive Asian nose. If it is not for the novelty of air travel, nobody is choosing to travel by plane out of wisdom. As a grown up and normalised aviation geek, I can easily understand the general public's choice.

My wife, two year old daughter (maybe even younger) and me had a flight with Aeroflot too. We should fly from Frankfurt over Moscow to Tokyo. Because of problems before taking off, we missed the connection the flight from Moscow to Tokyo. Not to blame Aeroflot here. But the flight which we got was from Moscow to Beijing and then to Tokyo. We had to wait 2 hours in Moscow and 7 hours in Beijing. And the Aeroflot time checked the buggy directly through. I asked before and they said i will get it in Moscow. I didn't. So I had a heavy camera bag and a small child for 7 hours in Beijing. We arrived in Tokyo 12 hours later. What trip.... And no, we never flew with Aeroflot again!

On a 10,5 hour flight, my grandmother and I sat next to this lady we didnt know and we ended up having a really nice and wholesome conversation. It might be a culture thing tbh.

Fun fact McDonnell Douglas manufactured planes until it merged with Boeing in 1997. I only know this because Boeing is also in St. Louis, MO, 6 hours south of Chicago. St. Louis is better.
