As soon as he said "plugging it it isn't gonna hurt the thing", I thought that is actually a terrible idea...Since you cannot know how much liquid got into it, nor when it did, the bare movement of the console can create new bridges and blow more stuff. Great video btw , really enjoyed it!

I would like to mention that when working on electronics which has been water damaged, you do not want to power it up before an internal examination. There may be water inside that is just sitting there waiting to cause havoc (or a PSU blowout). Just thought that this should be the first thing to do when working on a water or liquid damaged console. You could do a power on test for other issues. Good Luck! and Cheers!

As others stated, you should put the original winbond memory IC on it and try again. I would say you should try with 2 working digital consoles to change this memory between them and try to update but you could end up with 2 more broken consoles so not suggested! Also there is a small possibility that the winbond flash gets updated with the current firmware version installed and when you changed it from another console, this console was on a different version causing that to happen!

for the bios chip , go buy a cheap reader and leads for like £10 all together and you can read and write to the chip , the actual winbond chips are cheap enough to buy then you just program it and solder back to the board , takes about 10 minues from start to finish . Did you ever refit the orignal bios chip to the board as ths may stop it updating if the serials dont match ??

I wonder if the last update had some sort of error in it that Sony missed or the digital console downloaded the incorrect firmware. Maybe if you could get hold of the first original release firmware and then try updating.
@Mik_S2 жыл бұрын
My guess is that the digital and disk versions have the same physical PCB and there is something on it that sets its identity and now it thinks it has a disk drive. I can think of 2 things and that bios chip is one of them, as it can in theory changed with software in the factory. The other option could be a resister or link soldered somewhere. Maybe the area with the diode and resister you replaced is the thing that sets it? Try and compare them between versions and see if there is a difference. Maybe it is the value of the resister that sets it?
@ItalianRetroGuy2 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt this could be the case, when updating the system usually runs some checks and if any of them fails it does this. It has been like this since the PS3, the blu ray drive is included in these checks, but it's probably not the only thing.

Hello! Great video, again! I assume the bd-rom serial number is into that winbond chip. So only thing you can try is finding that original chip back. Or try to install the bd-rom from the board that you took of the new winbond chip. But you really need to buy a ch341 programmer which is really cheap and by this you can make a copy of the bios chip. This can be used for UART diagnosis on PS4 as well. Anyway your videos are an inspiration to me!

My guess is: that chip you have replaced has data encrypted and it can not be replaced not even with another's console same chip, if you get to make the original chip work and put it back in you will be able to make it work, but I asume that the original chip can not be fixed.

I have got to the bit where it will not update. My thoughts go straight back to that winbond ic you replaced earlier in the video, you mentioned it was something to do with the bios. So my brain is wondering if it's configured for a non-digital board, a console with a bluray. I shall watch the rest of the video now to see how wrong I was in that thinking! EDIT: Darn, I was so hoping I would be right, especially when you thought exactly the same thing. Such a shame you could not fix it. But considering water got to so much of the board, it could well be anything, could be the SSD, could be a tiny part of the southbridge circuitry. You could spend hour upon hour and still not find it. Finding shorts and other power issues is one thing, finding where a single data packet is getting lost is a whole different game I should imagine.

Hi shouldn't of removed the battery as this stores parameters to the bios and then you'd reset it so its probably now have missing bios data and the bios chip as to be from another digital board as the bios are set differently from disc drive to digital try replacing the original back and try starting in safe mode all so there could be a resistor also that failed that sets the digital and disc drive version apart also could try jumping the bios chip on the board with a wire I beleave pins 1-5 but not 100% on the pins so I could be wrong anyway great video fella

Only issue with that, is that repairs would be 10x harder due to having to remove the waterproof material to remove parts. I've worked on some PCB's that some sort of glue or resin over it (top and bottom) making repairs almost impossible. I guess console manufacturers don't expect people to be getting them wet! I've never understood how people do it or the amount of damaged HDMI ports either, people just don't look after their stuff I guess... Interesting fact: Mitsubishi Electric, the company that produced the CR2032 battery you removed from that PlayStation 5, also manufactured the A6M “Zero” fighter used by the Japanese Imperial Navy during World War II. I hope this random bit of trivia doesn’t get me blocked… Let’s test that with another bit of useless trivia!😂 Sony emerged in the wake of World War II as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. in the bombed out ruins of a department store. What would emerge as one of the world’s foremost producers of consumer electronics, in a country that would become known for such products in the post-war era, would go on to develop Japan’s first tape recorder. The company went on to license Bell Labs’ transistor technology and developed the first commercially successful (not THE first) transistor radio.

@TheCod3r Жыл бұрын
That's fine, because clearly you're not a professional. Any professional needs to be able to plug it in to be able to figure out the initial fault. Would you have surgery without the surgeon knowing what he's looking for? Probably not! 99% of devices I receive have already been plugged in before they reach my bench. Let's say the customer sends in a console and reports it isn't turning on. Not turning on to a customer is completely different to my definition of not turning on. Not turning on to me is either completely dead, or it'll fire up and shut back down. Not turning on to a customer can be no power, some signs of life, turning on but no display, turning on but failing to boot etc. If the console is turning on but failing to boot, that's a completely different scenario to a complete no power. No Display os also different. Customers can also suspect liquid damage just because it won't turn on because they're not technically minded and don't know how to word things. Not all cases are the same. This is why you should probably think before you comment with such nonsense. You're welcome to an opinion, but if you don't know what you're talking about you should probably keep quiet!
