If you make a good magnetic or a centrifugal brake, you certainly don't need both. I have a Lew's Mach pro combo. The roxani combo that Abu makes and I also have a Shimano chronarch on a st.croix victory rod. The chronarch is about 270$ compared to the zata/roxani and mach's for 150$ but it's definitely in the framing. The chronarch for an extra 100$ I don't think I'd purches if it didn't have an aluminum frame. The roxani/zata and Lew's combos cast almost as good and feel almost as smooth. The issue I have is when I hook a bass or accidentally hook a musky I can 100% feel weakspots in my frames on both Lew's and Abu
@jonathanspadafore75992 жыл бұрын
Shimano certainly feels better in my hand. I absolutely love the chronarch but for 150$ for the combo of both the Lew's Mach and zata you can't really beat it. If I ever buy reels by themselves now I always stay away from graphite frames. When I fish a frog on the Lew's or Abu for example and I'm really giving fish the beans I can absolutely feel it through my whole hand. Where as when I use the aluminum frame shimano for example I know what to expect Everytime I set the hook and for that feeling to be the same Everytime.

Hi, when you said you prefer the Abu's IVCB 6 brake than the shimano idc 4 and daiwa SV spool braking system. I am curious how does the IVCB 6 comparing with the Shimano SVS infinity braking system? Since both of them are centrifugal brake. Does is sensitive to wind? How does both of them perform when casting toward a mild breeze? Does the IVCB 6 cast further than the SVS infinity? Because I had changing a lot of reel to find out which braking system I love the most. I had a tatula SV for finesse and power finesse fishing, I love the way the SV spool perform. I need a bigger reel for casting 1/2 oz to 1 1/4oz lure. I had tried SLX DC, not the reel I like, doesn't like the braking system. I had tried Daiwa tatula 100 without SV spool, doesn't like it either. I had tried the magnetic Magtrax braking system, not a very dynamic caster. Sorry for the long story, but I really want to know before I purchase, I have an eye on Curado K, Tranx 200, and Abu Garcia STX, still can't decided which to get. I scare I get the wrong one again

I don't care what type of brake it has,only time I use them is to get used to the reel.Every reel is different,even by a little and even if it's the same model and brand.Once I'm used to it all brakes are off except the spool tensioner,I still use that so in case something happens or whatever right before I cast and abort the cast and I happen to take my thumb off the spool it doesn't over run. Say I went to cast and my coffee tips over and instead of casting I bend down to pick it up before it all spills out.....or a beer or drop a lit cig in the boat...LOL Actually I'll try to stay away from the mag brakes because they just add to the price for something I don't need.Also isn't any way I'm spending that sort of $$ on a reel I use for casting 1/32 and 1/16oz jigs to Crappies and Bream,I'll stick to the Shimano Caius 151.May get a Daiwa CR80HSL to try.If I'm fishing salt I may spend more for a salt reel,not the braking system.For now the old Shimano Citica 201b is still doing me just fine.It's fished for everything from Crappie/Bream to Striper,Carp,to Red/Black Drum and everything else in-between since I bought it all those years ago. Shimano and that computer controlled mag,I have to laugh at those and the users that think they need and dish out the extra $$100 for them....LOL! Nothing like hooking a Basser every time with new gear and a high price tag..LOL BTW,I have some ocean front property in North Dakota if anyone is interested...
@TackleAdvisors3 жыл бұрын
I've yet to meet someone who can achieve the same distance and consistency with no brakes on. Most people that I know that fish brake free usually do so with spool tension high and spool bearings which are gunked up. I for one will never use spool tension. Right off the bat it impacts accuracy, increases start up inertia, and changes the baits trajectory off the rod tip. I don't understand the thought process of avoiding mag brakes due to it being an added cost. You can buy a mag braked reel for 30$. Many higher end reels us centrifugal brakes. DC braked reels aren't perfect. But they'r'e fun. And will outperform even the most educated thumb. Give some dc equipped reels a rip and a curl of line will come up over the spool about an inch and maintain that to the apex....teetering on the virge of an over run. You can't do that with your thumb. Maybe with a monomag knobby. But that's throwing 600' plus. DC to someone who's never used a dc braked reel. Is just fun. The sound it makes is unique. As is it's performance. Additionally, fishing thinner lines makes the task even more difficult due to the feed rate not decreasing as much as higher diameter lines. Go up in line diameter, it's easier to go lower in brake. Add oil and spool tension you can go even lower. Then there is the risk...use .003 diameter line and over run....it's game over. Braking is very important. Have a mid cast lockup...you either break of or need to cut that line off. And you can't even throw ultralight baits with any spool tension with any accuracy. Even an errant drop of oil will negatively impact performance and consistency. And it's all about fun and being more efficient. I don't know anyone who targets crappie with bfs gear.
@rider660r3 жыл бұрын
@@TackleAdvisors Not many can do it I know,not many have fished casters for around 30 yrs either.Like I said,the tension is just there so if I need to do something as I was going to cast,and it's only set enough to keep it from overrunning when it hits the ground,deck as it should be set.When I cast for crappie and bream no I can't get it in a coffee can all the time at 20 -30yds but give me a 5gal bucket and it'll be around 50%. My thought process is on the extra $ for the mag brakes is just I don't need to pay for something I don't need and sure as hell ain't paying around $100 for that stupid DC crap.Like anything,electronics,are subject to failure a lot more often than anything mechanical.Also I doubt the DC system is somehow less weight than a regular spool in needing to have magnets to create the small electrical charge though the coils..The heavier the spool the more inertia it needs to overcome to start and stop the cast.A lot of heavy line on a spool isn't good to cast light lures/baits. I use 8# braid on the 151.Am I going to throw a 2 oz lure or even a 1oz with it...no.I'm using it to cast 1/32 and 1/16oz jigs under a Trout Magnet float. Not knowing anyone doesn't mean they're not out there.I know a a good many welders that are "certified" and yet weld worth crap,I welded with many.Also know many mechanics that are "ASE Cert" and the majority of them are just part swappers and have no diagnostic ability unless they plug a computer into a new vehicle.But there are many good welders out there and mechanics...just because one doesn't know one or can't do it themself doesn't mean they're not there or anyone else can't either. Your vids are good and very informative,I watch many of them.But I'll disagree here because I'm not one that has seen it,I do it all the time been doing it for many years.I'm even swapping out all my small spinners and going the casting route because it's quicker to cast and is more accurate than a spinner,also have less "windknots" that form from multiple ways that you have to do with a spinner to keep from getting them.That's why I want to try a 70 or 80 size reel to see if it's better than the 151.Sorta thinking it isn't because the dia of the spool is more than the 151,but I'll see.

I never made the switch to these . I understand the casting and accuracy. The durability has always been my concern especially when catching large fish. And I know there are some out there that can. I feel as if everybody’s buying into the hype of what these types of reels have become in the last 10 years. Especially the high gear ratio. Iv always and I mean always have gotten large fish to hit with low gears for 40 years . So if your reel is weak in structure it makes sense to catch small stuff . Really like what you do . Where do you see the market going in ten years for these long time companies. One other question how does the 6500 beast from Abu brake with the magnetize bearings that it seems to have. Thanks for the good work.

Good question. Not a ton of innovation over the last few decades in any aspect of fishing equipment. Gear ratios are just that....gear ratios. While I don't like 20"ipt retreieves personally.....I also don't need to crank 4 feet of line on a bass reel. Fast retrieves are mainly used to burn a bait back to get it out again. At least that's the benefit I see most valuable....at the same time...if the gear set runs on a monster primary and toothpic of a pinion....it's not gonna last like new very long after a few hooksets. And hooksets are what do the most damage. I don't think abu round reels are going anywhere. Akios and Omoto are selling products with machined frames and quality components, at a better value than an abu.....and their market share has stagnated. I know a shop that sold hundreds and hundreds of abu rounds in a few weeks.....I bet 100 omotos sold in the USA in the same time frame. It's all about marketing. The Bass industry consumer loves new stuff....if marketed correctly it'll sell. Even if it doesn't have much benefit. I haven't seen anything on magnetized "bearings" The beast round reel doesn't really strike me as anything impressive, seems more like a special edition over anything else.

Thanks for the info. Hook sets are hard on rods, reels, line , and us sometimes. The beast that I have looks at had magnetize bearings on the spool shaft and side plates bearings. I almost wonder if there was a magnet or magnetize bearing on the cog drive and clicker gear of the spool . So when installing the ads spool back into the side plate and frame there seemed to be some forces that pushed back . It puzzled me as to how this was actually working . What I thought was unique about this reel was the Pion gear support on the brake plate and side plate with a larger spool shaft. Also it’s nice to drop for grouper and then come in from 20 miles out top water fish for snook and tarpon with the same set up. Here in NC reds, kings, black drum and top for water trout. You never know what your going to run into. There’s a tool for every occasion. Again thanks for your hard work and testing out reels with great honesty.

That's interesting... I haven't been in the beast round... Sorta sounds like an old morrum or zx brake plate design. Are you referring to the bronze bushing sleeved to the spool side of the shaft that the pinion can ride on? That's a cool feature of the live spindle design abu incorporates on the round reels (omoto akios as well
@quinthiggins59753 жыл бұрын
That and the cup that comes off the brake plate that houses the bearing thats on the shaft . Then the sleeve holds the pion that has only two slots not four . The pion does not use the centrifugal brakes to Engage Lastly there is a bearing on the inside of the side plate holding the shaft . The spool shaft is the largest in diameter that I have seen in this size Abu. It’s beefy. Pics are always better . Hope that’s a bit more clear .
@quinthiggins59753 жыл бұрын
There is no Bronze brushing on the shaft . Just a cross pen going though the spool shaft that pion rides on . The bearing is in between this and the spool locked in the spool .

New sub here. I was looking to see if you had a video on the Shimano curado DC? I didn't see one.
@TackleAdvisors3 жыл бұрын
I've referenced it a few times. I don't think I did a dedicated video on it. I prefer the SLX over it and have pretty much benched it in favor of it. The Slx is so such a great form factor in comparison to the curado. I benched my brass gear upgraded metanium dc in favor of the slx as well. But to each their own. I throw braid 20 to 40lbs...and it happily lives at 1 or 2 on the dial. If you have big mitts....you'll probably like the curado more than me.

@@TackleAdvisors fair enough. One more question. Since I'm still new to your content. Correct me if I'm wrong. There are a lot of reels that are re-branded. Do you have a list? Or direct me to a specific video. Thanks again for the great content.

I love the Daiwa Tatula 100. I have 4 o those and an elite. They are so much better then what Lew’s and abu put out and they are both made by doyo.

Seven years of brand loyalty to Abu and I kick myself for using 'meh' performing reels for that amount of time... it's been 4 seasons since the switch to high end shimano and daiwa and never looked back.

Hmm, I guess I'm missing something. I'm using the winch baitcaster jigging for some Lakers and I use it to cast with I think it does both well. My Revo Toro doesn't cast well for me though.

You subscriber here dig your style definitely like the humorous bits... It would be nice though if you could be exactly specific why you choose one real over the others your vague description of superior versus inferior design like I said is humorous but for a nerd like me I like the hard facts but if that saves you grief and lawsuits I completely understand send it brother! Why so much trouble with Abu? In all these years I have never seen a photo or publication showing a broken gear or some other part including the cheapest reels (not counting the people who use them for years without the minimum maintenance). With the subject of brakes, I suppose that the company thinks of reels to be used all over the world ... with countless species of fish ... better to have more than less brakes ...estoy suscripto! muy buen canal ...saludos desde el norte de Argentina...donde se pescan los hermosos "Golden Dorado" 🎣🎣

Comparing 2 reels that are essentially made in the same factory and possibly the same line is not surprising to see similarities. Also t wing design does not play well with braid to leader line if that is something someone has intentions of implementing in their angling ambitions.
@TackleAdvisors3 жыл бұрын
I've never had an issue with any Twing'ed reel and a leader connection..Not once...What knot do you use. I use either an Alberto, FG, or Pr knot......zero zilch nada in terms of issues and that's over 100000 casts. :) I could maybe see an issue if using a uni to uni with a leader tag...but that's about it.
@jeffc26302 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Nah, the t-wing is way better for a leader knot! It's all I use and I've never had an issue!

I've heard that 85% of the reels made that we in the US use are made by one company in Korea. LEWS, ABU etc. Some exceptions are Shimano and Daiwa. And guess what, those are the two you ended up favoring in this review.

Big fish are slow I find the higher retrieve ratios too high. I find myself going too fast use your thumb drags never been right on baitcasters. Damm it’s 50 lb braid w 12-20 leader shit it’s a little winch

When you need that long cast DC is what I'll go for... my dc I got own so many fish because I can cast so far enough on bank and boat even in wind... all this other caster gonna need some kinda chip if they gonna try to be shimano DC or better material or something
