Shimano Tranx 200 or Curado K: THE MANY DIFFERENCES Inside and out

This was a very interesting tear down. I went in thinking it was a Curado K with a bigger handle and paint job...with a few rubber seals....But after the tear down when I was able to take into account all the slight changes did I see the entire picture. Interesting reel for sure. As far as I can tell...It actually is a more robust and rugged Curado K.

@@thewarpsyrhead For me and my fishing....Curado K. For my inshore and heavy applications I need capacity so I lean to the 300/400/500 sized baitcasters. I don't target smaller inshore tablefare like fluke and seabass which is common in the NE. And a prime fit for the tranx 200. IIf I was pulling in 5lbs of salad for every lb of bass I think I'd go tranx

I watched this video and commented a year ago. After a year of using this Tranx 200 in salt water I wanted to comment again for anyone else watching. Ive been using this reel in SW and FW for the past year. I tripped and fell into the SW after stepping into a hole in a sand bar and dunked it fully submerged. I continued to use it for the rest of the day and didn't rinse it until I got home. I never took it apart to this day and there is no corrosion or rough retrieve at all and the Tranx still runs like a new reel. I have not had any issues with the plastic worm gear either. I run #30 suffix 832 coastal cammo braid on it and its great line so far.

My buddy fishes his Curado k in the salt from time to time and after I had taken apart his reel for maintenance the two bearings that were seized in the reel was the pinion support closest to the spool and the bearing where the handle shaft goes into the frame. Pretty neat to see that Shimano knows these are the most susceptible bearings in the reel. Amazing video as usual

Regarding your comment @ 26:48 about bringing the Tranx peacock fishing over the curado. Although I don't have first hand experience, yet, I can provide a report from a guide that books 2 or 3 trips annually to Brazil that hosts trips for about 10 clients at a time. He consulted with me on the Curado K and asked my thoughts were on bringing it to the Amazon for big pea's, and my initial consensus was the same as yours. The additional pinion support in theory should help it hold up better to chucking around those big wooden choppers and supporting the strain of locking down the drag to prevent a 20 pound peacock from breaking you off. Well after the first trip, all of his curado's were worn out beyond just needing to replacing a few parts. He replaced them with Tranx, and 6 trips later they are still going strong. Why this is, I have no idea. You would probably be one of the few people with the knowledge of these reels to have the ability to inspect them after amazon usage and come up with a conclusion.

Another top notch review. Shimano advertises the Tranx 200/150 as an "enhanced durability" for "lighter inshore presentations". Not sure where the thought that it is for larger fish than the 200K series came from. I see it as a great alternative to putting the 200/150 Curado's in the saltwater. I personally like the option to keep my freshwater reels strictly freshwater and still have the option to use a low profile casting reel.

Fun reel to fish. Have caught a few hundred Spanish Mackerel and a bunch of small kings and it's more powerful than it looks. I still think the 300 high speed is the best Tranx but they're all great. The 500 will truly change your view on fishing it's awesome.

I think the curado k is so nice. It's amazing. I use it now for frogging and swim baits and heavy pitching but you know what.... I think I might just have to get the freaking tranx. I feel like the tranx could be one hell of a swim bait frogging rod and lighten the load on the curado.

If you were throwing 1oz buck tails with 11' rod...... which would perform best at cast distain's and spread between the 2 in distains casting. The 200 or 300?

Good question. 300 gives you the capacity ...200 gives you the lighter spool weight. 11' rod gives you easily achievable lure speed.....I'd consider going with one of the new lexa reels tw or standard as the brake is a bit more fine tunable if you prefer higher capacity and heavy line.

Thanks for another excellent vid. I was under the impression that the Tranx was a Curado with core protect. Interesting (and heartening) to note the design differences. I love all my Curados but I got the Tranx purely for it's salt water resistance. Btw... I have no idea how you managed to do the bearing removal without a lot of swearing... That looked hectic.

I have Curado K and use it inshore and can now from this video see that the changes between it and Tranx are immediate improvements from the Curado for saltwater use. To keep it useable, my Curado has to be torn down after each fishing trip and both of the bearings that supports the pinion under the spool tension as well as on the spool side have to be cleaned or it will seize the pinion and lock up. By seeing that Shimano put bushings there on the Tranx tells me that they are purposely designing this for saltwater use based on the actual failures of Curado users in saltwater. The Shimano sales rep at the fishing show originally sold me on the Curado K that it was also saltwater ready and at that price point was indeed very hard to beat. It casts like a dream, good smooth drag, etc. However I've since then not seen any further endorsements by Shimano that this reel is saltwater ready which it clearly is not. My Curado has now been repaired too many times and will go into backup duty only. Curado is a 100% freshwater reel only, and I would also recommend cleanings even in fresh because of that tight pinion fit in two bearings. Have you by chance also done a comparison with Daiwa Coastal SV TW? That is the reel I'd like to see the Tranx compared to. Thanks for this very informative video.

Irrespective of plastic, the only trouble I've had was that the line doesn't lay evenly. It seems to pile more up on the left, even though the arbor knot is on the right. Buggy. How to fix?? It's brand new. Curado DC.

Because I haven't seen your vids about removing the pin from reels having internal-to-the-spool ball bearings I cannot figure how you removed the one from the Tranx. Did you attempt to cut off one side than pull out the other side? If so, I believe there are devices for sale that will push the pin out. If that is not so, I made a fixture so that I could push the pin from the original Citicas so that I could replaced the plastic bearings and replace them with ceramic bearings. Trouble was, it appeared to me that doing so had no beneficial effect. If you would like to see my fixture, I will help you.

I have a few spool pin pullers. I used the boca on this one which failed (had to cut it off the spool using a Dremel. I have a boca and a hand made custom for some spec reel applications. Trinidad and tranx 500 sized. I've had hedgehogs fail twice now

Hey, a quick shortcut to find the schematics on the shimano website is to use your browser search function. If you know the model number, press ctrl+f and type it into the box that appears (or copy/paste it). Not perfect as a solution, but it's a hotfix till they mend it.

I own both. I bought the Tranx 200 as a smaller swimbait reel. Looking back i guess i did just buy a Curado K with a different paint job. I only fish freshwater so I really didn’t even care about saltwater benefits if any. I guess next time I’ll just grab another Curado K haha. Definitely not disappointed in the Tranx. Like every other Shimano reel it’s a damn good reel. But i agree with you 100% I think it was basically a Curado K that was a little more resilient to the salt water of a weekend angler. Luckily i stick to freshwater only. Still happy to have both in my fleet. Sometimes it’s nice to look at a silver reel i guess 🤷‍♂️ aka the “Porsche.”

I mainly use pozidrive not Phillips. And I'm on the same screw drivers that I was using 2 years ago or 100 reels ago. And they still grip insanely well. I use wera tools size 0 and 1. And an 00 wera Philips. And hollow ground bladed /flat heads are a must. I'm not picky about wrenches. Just a standard metric set

I hate on the Curado the numbers are on the side and with the wheel being so far into the frame you can hardly see the numbers or get your finger on the wheel to turn it.

Recently picked up a Curado K 201. The TranX 201 was very tempting, but I ultimately opted for the Curado because I wanted the 6.2:1 ratio, the TranX was just too fast for my preferences.

I know you can do that, but the faster gears lose leverage and they also don’t match-up with my other reels. I prefer to keep all retrieve speeds as close as possible, 25” to 27” per turn, because it makes it easier to use different setups. Less to learn, less to have to change. Muscle memory and repetition.

When you mentioned how this reel isn’t ideal for maximum distance casting, are you saying the Curado is a better caster? Although there is a spool weight difference, are the changes significant? Also, when comparing the Curado K’s XShip support bearing to the Tranx200’s “increased size spool shaft” does it balance things (longevity and durability) out in terms of the life of the gears? It's just not an extreme distance long range bomber......Not sure why to be honest. (I did a full casting distance test not sure if you saw that with this reel) Not sure what your asking about the balance........Go at it like this.... Tranx for swimbaits, winching, and salt. Curado for about everything else you'd want a large low profile all around baitcaster....I for one like the SLX DC over the curado k and curado dc (i have a curado dc and scorpion mgl......collecting dust.) Curado K hates saltwater the pinon and pinion bearing rusts like crazy and locks up!!! Really liking my TranX200 I have two and no saltwater problems yet real smooth casts great good power for the swimbait Striper fishing I do.

I used the curators for salt water striper fishing. They just don’t handle the job. The two tranxs I got are clearly for saltwater. No issues so far and stronger reel for the job.

The blue thing was the spool pin remover after hacking it apart to get the tools "pusher" freed. The pusher.. Pushes by being threaded against the pin. In this case the handle snapped off inside

There’s a set of pliers made by Boca Bearings that is very useful for removing the pin on the spool shaft and can also be used for the pin on the main shaft of some of the spinning reels, but then you probably already have one 😊 Makes life a little easier for reel tech’s

I have one... It's decent... The slop in the plier Jaws allows the pin to slip off under pressure slamming shut in the shaft... And reinstalling the pin and keeping it even is a little iffy.... I milled it out and use it on big reels in some instances... Ernie from bearing bad sent me a bunch of similar tools to this and they're awesome..

Hi! Got a question about this Rubber and its coating: When I open the reel once I saw a little white spot in the rubber/seal thing, which I thought was oil or dirt. I checkt it and rubbend a bit of the coating away, didnt know what it was. Do you think it will effect the reel, escpecially the saltwater protection a lot if some coating ist missing? Ps: gonna use it 95% of the time in freshwater only. Thank you !

Help for my Tranx 200...I get a high pitch grinding sound when I engage the reel for half a turn after a cast. Like its not completely engaged for half a turn of my reel handle. Thank you

For starters check the spool tensioner.. Make sure it's no wrenched down and the side plate is on properly.. Loosen spool tension until there is side to side spool drift... Then check side plate.. Then see if fixed... Next inspect the spool pin (remove spool) and make sure it's not damaged. Also make sure there isn't any debris on the shaft or around the pin. With the spool out engage and disengage the reel (press thumbar /turn handle) make sure the pinion is moving inwards and outwards. That is what grabs the spool pin. If it's sticking what you describe will occur... Broken yoke springs or clogged or corroded pinion yoke supports (posts that the pinion support /lifter /yoke ride up and down on) could cause that as well.

It makes a sound like a zipper. Like its taking a little time to engage. Going to use it for frogging, cud see a problem setting the hook quickly on the end of a cast with braid. Is it damaging anything with that slipping action? Believe I will just take it back to BP and get a Diawa

Commenting late I know but in the Tranx Shimano has clearly addressed all the common failure points of the Curado when used in saltwater. Micro gearing sounds great until you start talking saltwater ingress and big fish and then it degrades spectacularly. The placement of that large spool bearing is important, not only is it for the spool but it's also right next to the engagement point of the pinion so realistically the bush probably doesn't do much work anyway. The pinion support posts are the same design as the original Curado and the Calcutta and I have never seen one fail whereas I have seen plenty of failures on the pot metal design in the Curado K.

No level wind shaft seal on the Tranx 200 - so what do you think I've been sealing up my Curado K's level winds with 😅 Also the MM gears in the CU K are known not to be the full size MM gears, like semi MM. So the Tranx 200 is more of conventional cut gears. Other than a few certain parts changed out I don't see how the Tranx is going to be "stronger" per se, but if you changed out all those bushes to bearings it'll be a much more in tolerance reel. Also the hood top plastic piece that covers the frame is a non replacement part - unlike the CU K.

Hey Brotha! I saw your post on that!....I'll take another look at the hood. While it may be listed as a replacement part on the curado k. It wasn't something that wanted to go back together on the curado DC which I'm cutting into pieces :) I think the gear cut was a result of tolerances offered by bushing compared to bearings. I've seen enough failed handle shaft bearings to appreciate the bushing placed there. The new z3 has a metal bushing there which I wish they did on the z3 In regards to the gear differences and MM differences.....It's pretty silly. That they cut so many different gear patterns......I still can't feel any differences between them. And I've fished all of em. I always fall back to if the steez can do it with non MM gears....what benefit does it serve other than not many places are capable of cutting gears as such (found that out from a USA manufacturer.)

I have the grappler 300 and love it. The only difference I know of is that it has the drag clicker and color

I like the polymer x-ship bushing instead of ball bearing. They look like they’re the same material as the main shaft support bushing on the talicas. That’s funny that you had problems with that spool shaft pin. I’ve been through 4 of those tools replacing bearings! Lol! I called shimano to try to buy one from them but they wouldn’t sell one........Damn it! Has anyone found a pin pusher that will fit a tranx 500 that doesn’t need modifications? TIA

I use the boca but modified it for the tranx 500 so I feel your pain

So you’re really not supposed to use a bearing pin removal tool to get the bearing off, how are you supposed to flush it out for maintenance and all that? Just submerge the whole empty spool or something lol?

As a bass fisherman, I was hoping this was going to be offered in a 5 ratio. I could see a place for that with 10XDs and such. But as it stands I don't see any benefit to this for bass fishing.

For 1.5-3 ounce Alabama rigs, would y’all go with a 300 or 200 Tranx?

I had the 400 paired with the cumara arig rod and it performed great. 400 is the same as the 300 with a tad extra width. The revo beast 40 that just came out I've had the opportunity to put toss around with the terminator a rig and I really dig the externally adjustable brake for what it's worth.

Might have had a problem everything was tied on properly with backing tried tape line was spooled at a tackle shop drag was weaker than my 30 dollar baitcaster that also claims 13 pound drag

I was worried about the plastic worm gear on my 200k. I own cheaper reels with metallic ones (aluminum?) I’ve got some good miles on my k and no issues with it what so ever. 👍

I was worried too when i first saw the plastic worm gears as i am a Shimano reel tech, but they don’t fare too badly in the long run. I’ve seem metal shaft worm gears wear out faster than these.

Hi got my new tramx 201 and was suprised when tightened the spooltension the spool had a play up and down. So got the spool out removed the bearing at the spool tension and had to realise the axle was only about 4.5mm and was loose in the bearing!! Cant be a manufacturing error since all these parts are machine forged or??? Can u drop ur email?

Size, the 70 only holds 85yrds of 12lb and the K holds 110 of 14lb.
