Right. Armies back then weren't anything like a modern military. If you were placed in charge of an expedition, you were in charge of... THAT expedition. You weren't now 'a general' and that's your career now, and you get to walk around with stars on your shirt, and you get a certain pay and pension. Just like whoever participated in the expedition wasn't a private or sergeant or whatever else. Just not how things worked.
