This is why you lock it to the top tube so people can use their weight on bolt cutters. Use locking skewers (locking axles) so no one steals your wheels. Carrying cables is for rookies. I use the Abus 410 mini as a bike messenger in NYC for the last eight years. It’s a great lightweight daytime lock for bikes under $1,000. Get the Abus 420 if your bikes a little more expensive. If your locking your bike up over night use two u locks or a chain and a u lock. Never lock you bike up again the exact same spot every day. People will think it abandoned or will be able to plan to take it.

Just make sure the lock is positioned as high as possible.

Thanks much guys. I got me a Jamis Renegade and fear losing it to thieves. This video helped and your comments made me feel more comfortable to stage my bike when need be.

If you don't put it at ground level, it's pretty effective, the thief will not be able to cut it with both hands. Electric grinders can cut anything so it's not a criteria for any lock whatsoever.

It would be better to see a real world test with lock securing the bike to a bike rack where the lock is attached high up from the ground. However, it's also worth noting how bike thieves tend to operate. First of all they will recce a location where bikes tend to be left noting what kind of locks are in use and if the bikes are worth the effort, also noting what time of day the bikes are left there. They will then return at a later date, perhaps frequently, taking with them the tools they will need. In most cases that is likely to be an angle grinder depending on location, if the cyclist is just using a cheap cable lock then obviously a pocket sized cable cutter is all they will need. As a cyclist you have to weigh up the various risk factors before making a decision.

Why not do such a test and make your own video?

@@bootsowen Well, I know that with the lock mounted higher up the frame there is no possibility of using the ground as a brace and cutting using bolt cutters with sheer physical strength alone is unlikely for most people.

I saw how another guy on YT couldn't cut the Abus chain, but you did so easily. Is there a difference between chains from different brands if they are of the same width

Have a look at my locks playlist, it is pretty random which ones are easy to cut, but thieves have angle grinders nowadays so nothing is safe!

@@bootsowen and that’s why is pointless to test any lock. With time anything can be cut. Pulling a grinder at night on a bike rack is not the most stealthy thing to do so there is not much to do if you leave your bike on an area where that is possible without bringing attention.

Use multiple locks of differing types and by different brands. Change up the strategy to suit the usage case - at work use a heavy duty chain alongside a cable or d lock for instance.

U must be kidding? Comparing Abus to Masterlock? Along with Kryptonite, Abus is the best brand for bike locks. They stand the test of time and exposure to outside better than any other, they are more lightweight with even better protection... He tested the 8/15 sold secure silver whilst the lick being on the ground and not attached higher to a bike.

The thing with these locks with key system is that in the end any serious thief will actually just pick a lock instead of carrying a bloody huge bolt cutter around... So it doesnt matter if your u lock is 14mm thick or what not :D

@@bootsowen Where do you have to leave your bike in order for the thief to cut the lock with an angle grinder- in the woods, in the field, in the middle of the nowhere? Grinders make noise and produce sparks, attract attention, so just leave the bike somewhere well lit and not miles away from people/shops/security cameras, civilisation and you’ll be OK.

Oh, funny dude and so dramatic title. This "lock" seems to be very old (rust on it), plus even similar modern version of this lock is very cheap and low rated according to manufacturer site. So it's expected that it could be broken easy more or less. Plus you still use dedicated tool to broke it.
