Back when I sold stereo equipment 95-97, we had a saying, "All Highs, All Lows....must be BOSE!" This was mostly aimed towards their satellite speaker system called Accoustimass. The 901s had A LOT more going for them than just rear-firing drivers. The voice coils were made of Titanium. It could produce an insane amount of air, which is how it is able to get fairly low bass frequency. It is comprised of 11 mid-range drivers. The EQ was required to off-set the signals so that they wouldn't meet up and cancel each other out. It was designed to interweave the sound together. They were fairly bad ass for the time. No conventional stereo system could blow them. Some guy had to connect them to an arc-welding AMP to blow them. In later years, BOSE realized it was better to trick the audience than to produce "good" sound. They still use active equalizers to amp up the treble and the bass, while they reduce mid-range. The mixture of high frequency when it hits low frequency, creates an illusion of mid-range. Like mixing Black and White paint to get Gray, instead of finding a natural Gray pigment. It's cheaper and more energy efficient. You may notice that NO BOSE product made today will list its supported frequency response. They don't want you to know. Because it is engineered to roll off and amp up in specific areas.
@hermanknief2 ай бұрын
Bose used 9 identical drivers per enclosure, each handling 30 watts which is why they were able to claim such high power ratings. There was no internal crossover (which is why you had to use their active EQ). They were a manufacturers dream in terms of the parts required to build them. They can sound okay if setup properly, but like any speaker that is sensitive to placement, they are not great otherwise.

The problem I think many see with companies like Bose, and for that matter brands like Beats/Apple in general, I feel its a given that they capitalize on the general ignorance of those who aren't balls deep into the hobby. There are people for every market that aren't really apt to do much research on what they buy as they either don't have the time or just don't care. They just want something that sounds perceivably nice for their budget compared to the selection they see at a given place like Walmart and will forever go without knowing there may be much better for their money elsewhere, and businesses will always capitalize on this especially when the average consumer will place a lot of value upon looks alone and it shows when the more popular brands like Apple and Bose focus on making their products more aesthetically pleasing rather than focusing more on the actual Utility of the product for the money.

Seen other speaker manufacturers get more in that market over the years. If I had to guess I would still say bose has a good chunk of the auto premium sound market. As much as I don't like bose you have to respect their marketing campaign over the years. Their is a reason why they have become as big as they are. Like it or not.

Nothing wrong with that, the average Joe does not care about imaging, separation and all the other stuff we like to hear through our hi-fi systems.
@homer2893 жыл бұрын
but, my only issue with that is that, they don't market themselves to be enjoyable, they market themselves to be a benchmark, so if their systems were less expensive and they understood they're a convenience brand and not hifi, id be less mad at them
@mouser783 жыл бұрын
@@homer289 They are a benchmark as they are best in class in what they do and the R&D to achieve that leading role has a cost that needs to be paid. Its not a question whether Bose is inferior, its a different application of a speaker and a different approach how speakers should project sound into a room and they do that very well. There are plenty of speakers with a certain focus, PA speakers, monitors, Hifi speakers, bluetooth speakers, ... that each require their own expertise. Its not because you don't make typical hifi speakers that you're doing something inferior, its all about the best speakers for a certain situation. Some of the best hifi speakers have a tiny sweet spot, so much that you loose it when you move your head. When entertaining people I'd rather have a speaker that spreads nicely in the room, critical listening I'll do on my own.
@Razor20488 ай бұрын
One issue that was overlooked in the video was one of the biggest issues with brands like beats, bose, etc., is the issue. Most of the people buying their products are often convinced/ tricked by the marketing material, and believe that their super V curve beats or bose is truly giving them the best possible sound quality and reproducing the music exactly as it was heard in the recording studio, and looking stylish while doing it. In most cases, it is not someone looking at a product and deciding that they don't care much about the sound quality but they need something compact and less visible. Instead it is people thinking the $800 sound bar truly offers better quality and replaces a 5.1 speaker system because the company advertises that it created 7 additional virtual speakers around the room. The truth in mane cases is that products like Bose aren't for someone looking for the best or accurate sound, instead they are for people who want a certain sound signature. For example, while you can get the bose sound with any quality headphone, as they can do V EQ without betting boomy and harsh, which is what bose and beats try to do (though bose does a better job at it than beats)

For me being on the budget end of the market, there are just better looking headphones in competition with Bose, that's all. It's like with Apples Airpods Pro (their only in-ears that fit me), they cost an equivalent of $365 here in South Africa (I'm not saying they are overpriced, but...). For less than that I'm able to get budget iems (multiple) and a Bluetooth dac/amp, the Qudelix 5k in my case, which also work as a USB desk based dac/amp and is able to accommodate my over-ear full sized headphones too. So sometimes it's also just economics.

People tend to fall into two different camps of listeners, those that want to emulate the recording and those that want to emulate the band. As a musician I am in the latter. Most advanced audio equipment will allow you to hear the bass and drums and provide clarity to the mids and highs. Is this the same as the gunshot from live drums or the shove in the chest from a bass guitar? No. Do most people have the room or listen to music at that level? No. Could most people afford the equipment necessary to produce a concert effect? Maybe. The Bose 800 and 900 series were the first steps in trying to achieve this "live" experience. They were never meant to be a stand alone speaker array. and were provided with one of the first D.S.P. I am not going into the technical aspects of speaker design and sacrifice for durability between studio monitors and P.A. gear. The 800 series can be driven by power amps that are only 250 watts R.M.S. a side and provide wonderful articulation. Why do audiophiles hate Bose? For the same reason the neighbors hate them.

Right at that moment it was being sold for EUR 190 on Amazon... So my original payment of EUR 300 went down the pipe. But thanks to them, I've decided to get away from BT headphones. And I do hope these (at least the HPs) will last much longer than 2-3 years. For noise, I put my 3M Peltor Optime III Ear Defenders over my Airpods Pro btw :D Can't be seen in public like that yes, but it works like magic at home.

i bought the bose 901 VI recently and i have to say, when listening to music they sounded great on some songs but for the most part they sounded so artificial like your in a hall or auditorium. Compared to my heresy ii, i keep wanting to listen to more and more music but with the 901’s not so much thats why i sold them right away. now i know why many people dont like them. not to hate on bose, i actually own and like their earphones. I had the 301s briefly in college. I wasn’t happy with the sound. I disassembled them and found shockingly cheap materials throughout. The cheapest possible particle board, $3 tweeters and $10 woofers with forty cent electrolytic caps. I knew then that Bose is a fraud.

i personally think their 201s and 301s were pretty good speakers i think their lifestyle speaker systems were boses downfall as lost some certain frequncies and the subs struggled on the lowest bass notes, but SVS are like bose of the last 20 years all about marketing actually thinking about it bose products are actually slightly better sounding than svs ,but not as good as B&W,kef mission , monitor audio and pmc for the price point

@@chrisclose7793 Dude, I had Mission 762i speakers for well over 30 years and they served me well but when I got my SVS Ultra books they were better in every way. Better bass, better treble, better mids, better vocals, you name it....BETTER PERIOD. Ever checked out the SVS website and read user reviews? SVS Ultra Book user review Lanny D said... "I have tried Polk R200, KEF LS50 Meta, Klipsch Rp-600m II, Revel M106, etc, and have returned or sold them all. The SVS Ultra bookshelf suit my tastes a little better than all the others." This is just one of many reviews like this one. I read a lot of comments on speaker vids and you're the first I've seen that said Bose is better than SVS...I mean C'mon man!

At the time (1974 forward) the saying went: No Highs, No Lows....must be Blose. No one needed to be an audiophile to know Bose was total garbage. I first saw the 901s in a bar/resturant, hanging from the ceiling. PURE SHIT, no bass. My JBL L55 pair just blew away the 901. With only 4-5" drivers, how could anyone expect anything resembling bass.

Bose 200 and 300 series speakers were pretty good back in the 80s. Now they attempt to build everything, do a mediocre job, and charge a premium price. Their comparable speakers now aren't as good as the vintage 301s.

Depends on your budget, preference, source and a lot of other factors. If you want a cheap powered stereo then Micca PB42x for under 100$ or Edifiers, If you want a good and cheap 5.1 then Micca PB42 front, PB42-C center, 42X back and Covo s for surround. If you want good DSP corrected stereo then Swans M300 Also you should get a subwoofer for low end for any setup if you have bidget. Tell me your variables first before asking for recommendations.

Here we go again, Bose speakers are success because the give people the product they want at a price that’s affordable! I have four sets that still sound great after 50 years give or take. People think Bose are good because they are! Audiophiles hate them and any other equipment that the average buyer can afford especially if it sound better then the high price equipment . I love audiophiles and their videos so much hot air floats out of the tv cuts my heating costs .

Affordable?! A KRK 5" studio monitor pair is the *same price* as a plastic Bose Soundlink bluetooth speaker... I don't understand how an order of magnitude difference in the respective profit margins on these products means that the BOSE is affordable? If the Soundlink speaker costs $40 to make and the KRKs cost $200 to make, shouldn't the respective prices be (say) $75 USD and $350 USD, not both priced at $350 USD?

When I was young in the 70's and the 80's I caught onto the snake oil Bose was dishing out right off the bat, first of all the 901 speakers were absolute CRAP without theyre crutch, the EQ box. Even then they just sounded like loud ass nightclub speakers, lots of volume but not really great HIFI sound quality. I bought a pair of Pioneer HPM100's back then and im still enjoying them to this day, extremely well made both in heavy walnut veneered cabinets and seriously heavy duty drivers inside with aluminum frames and giant magnets.

I didn't care about bose but the hate came when I tried to fix an uncle's speaker and didn't take long before I realised it was designe very much on purpose to stop anyone from opening other than Bose with no phillips screws anywhere and because I didn't have my tools it reached a moment I couldn't go forward because I needed to slide something but the screws were unreachable with a normal screwdriver. Now I even think that maybe Bose came with this BS of non- user repairability before Apple.

There's many brands that are like that, Meze Audio's Empyrean is a fine example. It's also very human for someone to want to keep their stuff exclusive, brands wouldn't be brands without it. Or because components require special attention and most of us don't know or care for that, me included. A lot of phones and cars work the exact same way, us consumers cannot access or repair it.

if you're not a casual luke warm individual, you'll realize that bose and the other large companies are only propped up by their marketing department and leverage of funds and the manipulation of the market. They capitalize on the ignorance of the individual and it works, very well obviously. Sennheiser was one of the very few companies to break that barrier without being mediocre luke warm trash like the others. A true appreciative deeper person who actually cares will realize in due time the true world of audio and how beautiful it can be while still providing value and avoiding diminishing returns at the same time. This has been the case in all categories, casual people, whatever their excuse is, a large family, multiple jobs, family problems, sometimes they just simply don't care and cannot enjoy audio at a deep level because they are not deep themselves, they just simply might be shallow. Who cares what the reason is because these people don't really matter in the large scheme of things. What matters is that we can truly appreciate what is offered and continue to enjoy all that there is. We understand what's going on and the casuals don't. I wouldn't worry about those people at the end of the day even though they make up a large part of the consumer market. I would worry more about growing our own communities of people who actually have the capacity to care and appreciate things of beauty.
