I was in the drywall business decades ago. One story sticks in my mind is when an 18 year old boy working with his dad doing the core board shaft walls with only the floor they were working on planked and staged. I think 17 stories up. The dad fell to his death. May he rest in peace. Even though we have built them with the slotted studs 1 inch board 2 ft wide from the floor and not in the shaft on staging the jobs always had every opening railed off and at least every other floor planked and ply wooded for a just in case.

As a carpenter, I have never seen that type of track used in this video, we use J track with a large flange in the back and a short one in the front the short flange in the front is for the sheet rock so the drywallers have something to screw into.

Yep I remember we had to screw the panel to the track to hold them in place 👍

I'm a union carpenter I built a lot of shaft walls near the open pit in the floor generally 4 stories high in New Mexico. I remember we never used safety harness near the open pit. I don't know why we wasn't tied off. As a carpenter apprentice I remember screwing top and bottom track and placing the studs up. Panel stud-panel-stud. The shaft walls we installed was for the elevator shafts. We were very careful not to fall into the open pit or drop the heavy panel , a 3/4 inch drywall down the opening. I reckon I was pretty strong carrying them drywall panels and placing them in place carefully. No safety harness in use. Yes it was quite scary.

Hi, In a commercial building, does it have to be 10 feet away from the property line? I know it has to 10 feet away from building to building but I never heard of property line.
@archicorner
@archicorner 2 жыл бұрын
The distance is dependent on various requirements. Zoning/Planning department may require buildings to be a specific distance away from the property line, these are called “set backs”. If Zoning/Planning does not have any setbacks, then the Building Department/ Fire department/ Building code may require a certain distance away from the property line for fire resistance purposes. The closer you get to the property line the higher a fire rating that may be required. It gets a bit complicated with having fire rated walls, windows, doors, openings, etc.

When calculating egress, when do you use the 0.15 factor? I know.2 is for corridors & doors and 0.3 for stairs
@archicorner
@archicorner 2 жыл бұрын
IBC Section 1005.3 states using 0.3 for stairs. But if you look at exception #1, if you meet the requirements you can use 0.2 instead. Likewise with all other components, per IBC 1005.3.2 you must use 0.2, but if you look at exception 1, if you meet the exception requirements you can use 0.15.

Hi archicorner how does the last panel of a shaft wall get put in and be able to friction in place?
@archicorner
@archicorner 2 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. There are various methods of achieving the end detail. Which method you use depends on the use of the shaft (HVAC vs. stairs for example) and the expected outcome. But one method is that the end vertical stud is also a J-Track with tabs, you simply unfold the tabs to keep the last panel in place. Google "ClarkDietrich J-Tabbed Track profile" for a visual sample. A second method is to simply screw in the last panel into the vertical J-tab. You can screw it from the safe side of the shaft wall. There may be other methods available too. Thanks for watching!

What is scaffolding?
@catrachohn90
@catrachohn90 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I thought I would try to answer your question. Scaffolding is temporary construction, used for the sole purpose of creating a safe surface for the workers to stand on while they work. Used when working on hard to reach places, and/or when unsafe for the workers. Scaffolding comes down when work is done, however can be very expensive in both time and materials. The methods for a shaft wall described in the video is a way of saving money, man hours, and resolving life safety concerns in construction. Hope this helps. Please anyone correct me if I got this wrong.
